  • School Of The Week

    Staatspresident Swart High
    11.09.2011

Staatspresident Swart High’s first team is the small schools champion of the central region. The team is captained by their flyhalf, Jan Frik Ludeke, whom also led the Free State Kiewiete at the VKB Reitzweek in Reitz. The team is coached by the well-known and experienced, Pieter Swanepoel, who himself coached quite a few Cravenweek teams before.

The team is unbeaten since 2006 in 40 matches. This team of Staatspresident Swart High will be remembered as the best from Brandfort the past ten years. Fourteen of the players represented the Free State Kiewiete at the VKB Reitzweek.

    The team is:

Ruan Venter is an attacking fullback who adds extra striking power to Brandfort’s already potent backline. He is also a excellent defender. He played for the Free State Kiewiete and was voted best fullback of the week in Reitz.

Shaun Prins is very fast, an aggressive defender and has a very good side step on him. He represented the Free State Kiewiete for the past three years. He deserves to play rugby at a higher level.

Johnny Barnard is an excellent distributer of the ball and as a centre has a good eye for a gap. He also represented the Kiewiete and was voted the best player in his position at the week.

Drikus Kotze have impressed with his solid defence in the midfield. He is also dangerous with the ball in hand. He represented the Kiewiete twice and was voted as the best inside centre at the VKB Reitzweek of 2007.

Kabous Alberts is a player who loves to score tries. He has plenty of gas and also played for the Kieiwiete.

Jan-Frik Ludeke played for Staatspresident Swart High’s first team and the Free State Kiewiete the last four year’s. An excellent attacking flyhalf whom can also hold his own on defence. One of the best flyhalf’s in the Free State.

FJ Marx is a player whose size might count against him, but all of his 60 kg is pure heart. He is fast of the mark and he puts great pressure on the opponents due to his speed. He represented the Free State Kiewiete the last two years and was voted best backline players of the 2007 VKB Reitzweek.

Heinrich Viljoen is an eightman who their can be kept an eye on for the future. He has great feeling for the game and links well between the backs and forwards. Also an asset to his team’s lineout options and breakdowns. Represented the Kiewiete and Free State u/16.

Rossouw van Staden is a ball poacher at the breakdown. He adds value to the team through his allround ability. He played flyhalf in the team’s last two matches of the 2007 season. One of the team’s representatives at the VKB Reitzweek.

Johan Slabbert is a hard working flanker. He is crucial in the team’s second phase ball and isn’t afraid to do the hard work. He also represented the Kiewiete.

Andrew Bester is one of the most talented locks in the Free State. Almost always catches the eye with his work in the lineouts and aggression in the loose. He is also a good ball carrier and has the speed of a loose forward.

Hanno van Straaten adds to the second row with his jumping, speed and ball handling skills. Like Bester he acts as a extra loose forward and with Bester he forms a formidable lock combination. He represented the Kiewiete the last two years.

Jorge and Paulie Andrade is the terrible twins packing at prop for Brandfort. They are good scrum workers. Both represented Free State u/16 and the Kiewiete.

Vincent Adendorf growed a lot as a hooker over the past year.

Divan Swanepoel is the most versatile player in the backline. He is fleet footed and has great hands.

Jaco Oosthuizen is the most versatile forward in the squad. He can easily slot into prop, lock or flank if needed.

  • Player Of The Week

Player of the Week – Herman Share
    17.07.2011
Diocesan College’s (Bishops) Herman Share represented Griqualand West Country Districts at the Coca-Cola Craven Week in Kimberley last year and hopes to attend this year’s edition of the most prestigious schoolboy tournament in the world as part of the Western Province squad.
Share plays flyhalf and inside centre for Bishops. Western Province’s first choice flyhalf for the Craven Week tournament in Port Elizabeth will Paarl Gimnasium’s Handré Pollard. He was also in action for them in Kimberley last year. “On a personal level I want to make the Western Province’s side for the Craven Week or Academy Week and I want to move back to flyhalf. I just want to keep building my skill level and keep growing as a player. As a team want to make it into the top 20 schools in the country,” said Share about his goals for 2012.

Share’s highlight of his career thus far is without a doubt representing Griqualand West Country Districts at the Coca-Cola Craven Week. Share also represented the province at the Grant Khomo Week in 2010.
How did it come that a player from Upington gets to attend one of the most prestigious private schools in South Africa?  “Bishops made a call to my mother and I got interviewed but it was difficult to make the move because I was playing two years for first team of Upington High. I feel that I’ve adapted quickly and I’m enjoying the type of rugby we are playing here,” said the talented player about his move to Cape Town.
Share says he enjoys the open rugby that Bishops are well-known for. “It’s the same as the type of rugby Australia plays and I like this type of rugby.” The flyhalf is also a talented sprinter so the defence can never afford to not keep an eye on him. His father, Leon Share was also a talented sprinter making a name for him in the 400m.
“I’m not sure yet, as I am only in grade 11 but I would like to continue with rugby after school in more professional way hopefully for the Cheetahs or Western Province,” said Share about his future plans. His heroes are Francois Hougaard and Bryan Habana.
