Rhys Wiblin and Josh Melville scored brilliant half-centuries to power their respective schools, St Andrew’s College and St Alban’s College, to victories over Steyn City and Peterhouse in their 50-over matches at the Makhanda Cricket Festival on Saturday.

After Connor Holder, the St Andrew’s captain, won the toss and chose to bowl first, his bowling attack responded by putting on a good show to bowl out Steyn City for 189.

Wiblin, then, took control of the chase and steered the hosts to 193/6 in reply, commandeering the innings with an 88 from 137 balls.

The opener dropped anchor to ensure that the hosts did not open up both ends to the Steyn City bowling attack. He was also part of two crucial partnerships that drove the local side to victory, sharing a 47-run second-wicket stand with Ben Scharges (16) and an unbroken 81-run seventh-wicket partnership with Ethan Malan (37*)

Earlier in the day, Matthew Barbour led the way for Steyn City with a wonderful 55 from 76 balls. He gave the visitors an ideal start by cobbling together two partnerships worth 97 runs at the top of the order.

His 68-run second-wicket stand with Josh Michau (40) was the biggest contributor to the Gauteng side’s 189-run total. Unfortunately, for Steyn City, the rest of the batting order didn’t come to the party. Only one other player, Keegan Smallbone (28), made it beyond the teens.

Thomas Bussiahn put the skids under Steyn City, knocking over 3/36 in 10 overs, including the all-important wicket of Barbour. Wiblin also showed his worth with the ball by dismissing Steyn City’s second-highest run scorer, Michau.

    St Alban’s College vs Peterhouse

St Alban’s and Peterhouse produced the highest-scoring match of the Makhanda Cricket Festival on Graeme College‘s Marais Field., Between them, they produced 430 runs, with St Alban’s scoring more than half, 224, in an 18-run win over the Zimbabweans, who tallied 206 all out.

When the coin flip went their way, Peterhouse chose to bowl first. That decision was rewarded when the Zimbabwean side made rapid inroads into the St Alban’s batting order, dismissing four of the Pretoria school’s top seven batsmen for less than a combined five runs.

Reabetswe Mokoka (20), Kyle Block (49), and Ethan Nel (37) resisted, however, and gave their team a fighting chance. The tide then turned when Josh Melville walked out to the crease in the 37th over. He struck four fours and three sixes on his way to a match-winning 65 from 47 balls. Melville’s blitz also catapulted St Alban’s beyond the 200-run mark.

In Peterhouse’s reply, opener Ndiriwashe Munatsirei carried his bat to keep his team in the match. His defiant effort produced an unbeaten 79 from 132 balls, but it wasn’t enough to see the Zimbabwe boys over the finishing line.

Jesse Eckard and Kyle Earle were the best of the St Alban’s bowlers, returning 2/16 from eight and 2/30 from eight respectively. Tiashin Daidoo and Christopher von la Chevallarie played their part by also claiming two wickets each.

Corbin Tidbury, back from doing duty for the Eastern Warriors in the CSA Cubs Week, guided Graeme College to a four-wicket win over St David’s Marist Inanda, scoring an unbeaten 79 as Graeme chased down the Johannesburg side’s 163 all out to win by four wickets.

Kingswood College, meanwhile, won their third game on the trot, comfortably defending a modest 118 all out to hand Michaelhouse a 55-run defeat. Daniel Jakins snapped up 3/6 and David Loudon 3/12 as ‘House was skittled for only 63 in their reply.

AW van der Merwe scored a brilliant century to set Hoër Volkskool Potchefstroom up for a 24-run win over Northwood in their Grey Cricket Festival 50-over match at the Old Grey Sports Club on Saturday.

The toss went Northwood’s way, and the KwaZulu-Natal side chose to bowl first. Potch Volkies responded by putting a sound 226/7 on the board.

The Volkies‘ bowlers then displayed great skill in bowling out Northwood for 202 runs in 46.3 overs.

Van der Merwe struck nine fours and six sixes in his match-winning 109 from 134 balls, which provided the foundational upon which Volkskool innings was built. He was out in the middle while all of Potch Volkies’ 226 runs were scored.

During his stay, Van der Merwe shared the crease with six partners. The most fruitful of those partnerships was a 67-run stand with Schalk Pienaar (18) for the fifth wicket, and a 55-run sixth wicket stand with Juan van Niekerk (13*).

Sihle Duma, with 20 from 43 deliveries, was Volkskool’s second-highest scorer. He and Van der Merwe added 40 for the second wicket.

Zander Nel backed up Van der Merwe’s excellent batting performance with a great showing with the ball. He troubled Northwood’s batsmen throughout and bagged a decisive 5/24 from 9.4 overs, which ensured that the Knights were unable to settle into their run chase.

Captain Jamie Wimble, who batted at six, gave his side a fighting chance with a breezy 70 from 79 balls. Unfortunately, for the Durban school, though, they produced little after his dismissal in the 45th over.

Namibia Invitational vs St Charles Colts XI

Dan Brassell starred with both bat and ball to help the Namibia Invitational XI steamroll the St Charles College Colts XI by a mammoth 216 runs at Nelson Mandela University. The Namibians had everything going their way, from the toss to the last ball.

After they chose to bat first, Michael Muller, batting at four, provided them with stability in the middle order, facing 76 balls for 79 runs, which took the game away from Saints.

Brassell, the number eight batsman, made his way to the crease in the 34th over and quickly went after the St Charles’ bowling attack, accumulating a brisk 69 from 61 balls. He and Muller shared a 55-run seventh-wicket partnership, which Brassell followed with a 51-run eighth wicket stand with Erik Lintvelt.

The all-rounder then made his mark with the ball. In six overs, Brassell captured 3/12 as the St Charles’ batting line-up folded for a mere 29 runs.

The boys from KwaZulu-Natal were never in the game with the bat. Patrick Muruza, who scored 10 runs from 29 balls, was their highest scorer. No one else made it to five.

    Other matches

Selborne College, meanwhile, edged out Framesby by two wickets, chasing down the local side’s 154 all out in a game ruled by the bowlers. Miles Feltham‘s 37 for Framesby was the highest score of the contest, while Josh Wilkie‘s 28 led Selborne.

Feltham was also Framesby’s best bowler, picking up 3/35. Avethandwa Manyongwa led Selborne’s attack with 3/37.

In another tight contest, Die Hoërskool Menlopark snatched a three-wicket win over Glenwood High.

Akhiel Sinath‘s 70 and 38 from Mishael Gunawardana powered the Durban school to 195/9, but Johan Bosch, with 5/37, ensured they received little meaningful support.

Bosch and Jovan Hartman, then, saw Menlo to victory with an unbroken partnership. When they crossed the line, on 196/7, Bosch had 40 and Hartman 38.

    Summarised Scorecards

Hoër Volkskool Potchefstroom 226/7 (AW van der Merwe 109, Sihle Duma 20; Ryan van Zyl 3/35, Thabiso Mtambo 2/34). Northwood 202/10 (Jamie Wimble 70, David de Bruyn 29; Zander Nel 5/24, Olefa Padi 1/3). Hoër Volkskool Potchefstroom won by 24 runs.

Namibia Invitational 245/8 (Michael Muller 79, Dan Brassell 69; Dresden Coetzee 2/28, Matthew Buckley 2/40). St Charles Colts XI 29/10 (Patrick Muruza 10, Fabian da Rosa 2*; Dan Brassell 3/12, Waldo Smith 2/3). Namibia Invitational won by 216 runs.

  • Affies still unbeaten after an incredible Peninsula Festival win

Affies still unbeaten after an incredible Peninsula Festival win

Day four of the Peninsula Cricket Festival delivered a century from SA Colts‘ opener and St Charles College captain Thandolwethu Zama and a cracking contest between Wynberg Boys’ High and Hoërskool Waterkloof, which brought an end to Klofiesunbeaten run.

Nothing, however, came close to matching the astonishing clash between Paul Roos Gimnasium and Afrikaanse Hoër Seunskool (Affies).

Paul Roos Gimnasium vs Afrikaanse Hoër Seunskool (Affies)

With 50-over matches the order of the day, a decision to bat first against Paul Roos Gimnasium on the PRG Oval, in Stellenbosch, backfired spectacularly on Affies after the coin toss went their way.

Four of their top six batsmen were out for ducks, another made one, and they found themselves on a barely believable 3/5 early in their innings. That miserable total soon became 13/6.

Astonishingly, they fought back from that seemingly hopeless position with commendable grit to grab a 29-run victory, with the end of the game rivalling the beginning of the contest for drama and a mind-boggling batting collapse.

PRG opening bowler Dion Slabber was responsible for four of the first five Affies’ wickets to fall and went on to finish with 4/42 from his 10 overs.

Vihan Pretorius stood strong, though, making 34 from 67 balls, which included five fours, before he was LBW to Noah Appolis.

During Pretorius’s innings, Dawie Barnard lost his wicket to Seth Muirhead, which left Affies – the only team with a perfect Peninsula Festival record of three wins from three games before Saturday – on 31/7. They were in dire straits.

Pretorius, in partnership with Zian Labuschagne, advanced the total to 66 before the former’s resistance ended. Labuschagne, batting at nine, was just getting started, however, and he found reliable support from Schalk Coetzee. They added a desperately needed 66 for the ninth wicket before Muirhead bowled Coetzee for 31.

Nico Loggenberg, then, helped Labuschagne to see out the 50 overs, chipping in with eight not out. Labuschagne, meanwhile, cracked five fours and two sixes in an unbeaten 79 from 119 deliveries, which lifted Affies to an improbable 182/9 after their terrible start.

Dion Slabber’s opening partner, Morné Pauw, kept Affies on the back foot with a tight 2/19 from his 10 overs, while Seth Muirhead returned 2/40 from nine. James Holm conceded only 24 runs from his 10.

Paul Roos lost their both of their openers cheaply in their reply, but Xander van Niekerk and Janko Webb righted the ship, advancing the total to 69 before Van Niekerk was run out for 27 after a 51-run stand.

Webb next found an able partner in Marcus Conradie and they tacked on a further 42 runs before Nico Loggenberg trapped Conradie in front for 22. That left PRG on 111/4, with the Affies’ total of 182 still appearing to be well within their reach.

The departure of Webb, however, who was caught off the bowling of Vihan Pretorius for 62 from 78 deliveries, which had included seven fours and a six, triggered a massive collapse. It mimicked Affies’ top order travails earlier in the day.

From 146/4, Paul Roos lost their last six wickets for only seven runs, crashing to 153 all out, to bring a sudden end to an extraordinary contest.

Pretorius, the man who got rid of Webb, captured 4/18 in 7.3 overs, while his new ball partner, Armin Snyman, knocked over 2/26 in seven. Carlo Venter chipped in with 2/19 in six, and Nico Loggenberg dialled up the pressure with his 1/20 in 10.

Wynberg Boys’ High vs Hoërskool Waterkloof

Hoërskool Waterkloof put their clean Peninsula Cricket Festival record to the test at Wynberg Boys’ High.

After winning the toss, Klofies chose to bat first and posted 253/9 – an above average score on the Jacques Kallis Oval.

Their effort was boosted by some good partnerships, including 49 for the first wicket between AJ de Villiers and Wian du Plessis, which ended when the latter was run out for 24. De Villiers and Juan Swart, who made 21, then added another 41 runs.

De Villiers occupied the crease until he became the fourth man out with the total on 140 after making 66 from 93 balls, the highest score of the innings, with six fours and a six.

Captain Franco Schmidt weighed in with 50 from 71 balls before falling LBW to Noah du Plooy, the seven-wicket hero of Wynberg’s win over Hilton College on Friday.

Useful knocks from Johan Feuth (15), Jean Cloete (15), and Liam Breedt (20) helped the Pretoria side to extend their run scoring average to beyond five per over. They could have fared even better had it not been for some sharp fielding from Wynberg, who, crucially, pulled off three run outs.

Du Plooy was among the wickets again, removing two batsmen, although he was a touch expensive, going for a run a ball from his 10 overs. Nicholas Stafford also claimed two sticks and finished with 2/43 from his six.

Faced with a stiff target, Wynberg’s batsmen rose to the challenge, with the top six all reaching double figures.

Opener Matthew Saunders set the tone with 58 from 89 balls, while three players contributed thirties; his fellow opener, Fawaaz Hendricks, stroked four fours and a six in his 34 from 43, while the duo put on 77 for the first wicket.

Chad Campbell added 38 from 59 and Michail Tarentaal provided the innings with a big boost by blasting three sixes and four fours in a 19-ball stay that brought him 37 runs.

Matthew Mills played his part, making 24, while Joshua Prince, with 16, and Hugo Norambuena, with 12 not out, helped to see Wynberg to a morale-boosting three-wicket win with an over to spare.

It was a tough outing for the Waterkloof bowlers. Jean Cloete and Wian du Plessis, with 1/24 in six overs each, were the best of them, but the Pretoria school was unable to slow Wynberg’s momentum as they charged towards victory.

Rondebosch Boys’ High vs St Charles College

Rondebosch Boys’ High‘s middle to lower order batsmen came through on Bosch‘s Cricket A Field after three of their top four exited for single figure scores against St Charles College.

Eli Aufrichtig, who usually opens the innings, smashed an unbeaten 53 off only 27 balls, batting at eight, with five of those going for four and two for six. Luca Ghignone, who opened the innings, held down his end as the top order failed to fire and contributed 33.

Other batsmen who made their mark included Tim Short (41), Matthew Brooks (35), and Raa’id Davids (27), while Zion van Rensburg, whose powerful hitting helped ‘Bosch end Pretoria Boys High‘s unbeaten run on Friday, was not out on 17 at the end as Rondebosch totalled 265/8.

Eli Aufrichtig and Matthew Brooks shared the biggest partnership of the innings, combining for 80 runs for the sixth wicket.

The off-spinner, Kaiyuran Naidoo, was the pick of the Saints‘ bowlers, snaring 2/26 in eight overs. Connor Simpson bowled well, too, and returned the most economical figures of 1/26 from nine. Opening bowler, Connor Vogt, picked up two wickets, but his eight overs cost 59 runs.

The St Charles’ reply began poorly when Christiaan Prinsloo was run out for a duck, and they fell to 9/2 when his fellow opener, Matthew Weightman, followed soon after.

Captain Thandolwethu Zama and Caleb Sharp stopped the ‘Bosch bowlers in their tracks, however, with a 79-run partnership for the third wicket before Sharp was bowled by Arin Spiller for 29. Once he departed, the rest of the Saints’ batsmen offered slim support to their skipper.

Zama, though, was large and in charge. He clipped eight fours and three sixes while scoring 108 from 134 balls.

Connor Vogt, with 17, while batting tenth in the order, recorded the next highest score, and the St Charles’ innings came to an end on 218 after 47 overs.

Alex du Plessis, fresh off a four-wicket haul against Pretoria Boys High, went one better, capturing 5/43 from eight overs to lead the ‘Bosch attack. Arin Spiller assisted, with 2/57 from 10 overs.

SACS vs Pretoria Boys High (PBHS)

On De Villiers Field, against SACS, Pretoria Boys High‘s Tim Gordon and Louis Kruyshaar struck fifties for a second day in succession, with Kruyshaar’s 73 from 96 balls, which included nine fours, their highest score in a total of 247/8.

Gordon blasted three sixes and five fours in his 53 from 63, while Tshepang Baloyi added a useful 36 from 46, and Jayden Knott-Craig provided late innings’ fireworks, with 23 not out from only eight balls.

Kruyshaar and Baloyi were also responsible for an 82-run stand for the sixth wicket.

Three bowlers claimed two wickets each – Ronan Meintjies returned 2/40 from 10, Ben Blackburn 2/49 from 10, and Aqeel Waggie 2/35 from eight.

SACS gave it their all to chase down Boys High’s healthy total, but they didn’t have quite enough in the tank, coming up tantalisingly short when they ran out of overs with their total on 236/9.

Aqeel Waggie, who has been a star performer for the Cape Town school with both the bat and ball, powered their run pursuit, striking 12 fours and a six in his run-a-ball 73 at the top of the order.

He and Ulrich Roth put their team on the front foot with a third-wicket stand of 117, which ended when Waggie was caught off the bowling of Ruan Coetzee. Roth lost his wicket on 176, having faced 107 balls for a patient 56.

Matthew Hill (25), Mickey Watson (17), and Tim Hodgkinson (15) helped to pull SACS to within striking distance of Pretoria Boys High’s 247-run total, but they needed a hard-hitting cameo to get them across the line, and they didn’t get it, leaving PBHS the winners by only 11 runs.

Euan Gottfried was the primary reason for the inability of SACS to accelerate late in their innings, which was when he took three of his four wickets, going on to finish with 4/46 from eight overs.

Ruan Coetzee bowled tidily and was rewarded with 2/26 from nine overs.

Bishops Diocesan College vs Hilton College

Bishops produced a run rate of over 5.5 per over in an entertaining innings of 267 all out in 48.3 overs against Hilton College after choosing to bat on the Frank Reid Oval.

Their innings was built upon a big second wicket partnership of 126 between Cameron Macbeth and Thaafier Japtha. It ended when Sechaba Gude got rid of Japhta, who had bounded along to 76 from just 73 deliveries while striking 10 fours and a six.

Macbeth was the third man out with the total on 193. He had made 69 from 109 balls, with two fours and two sixes.

Captain Alex Vintcent kept the momentum going with the same mix of boundaries in his quickfire 31 from 24 balls, and Waco Bassick accelerated the scoring rate even more, slamming four fours and a six in his 35 from only 21 deliveries.

Obekeng Motsepa led the Hilton attack, capturing 4/56 from nine overs. Sean Burman accounted for three Bishops’ middle order batsmen, taking 3/45 from eight, and Sechaba Gude, who has been in rich wicket-taking form, claimed 2/43 in 8.3.

Unfortunately, for Hilton, they couldn’t find a foothold when they batted. Opener Ben Wilson, in typically obdurate fashion, applied himself well, but he fought a lone battle to keep Bishops at bay.

Wilson carried his bat, finishing on 66 not out from 108 balls, having struck eight fours but, after 42.2 overs, Hilton College was all out for 157, leaving Bishops the winners by a large 110-run margin.

Opening bowler Daniel Perold led the Bishops’ onslaught, knocking over 4/30 in nine overs, while Matthew Edwards snagged 2/29 in seven.

St Stithians College vs Potchefstroom Gimnasium

At the Rondebosch Cricket Club, St Stithians College evened their festival record at two wins and two losses after a dominant 116-run victory over Potchefstroom Gimnasium.

The Johannesburg school’s batting hadn’t yet fired at the festival, but they did a better job on Saturday, leaning on Matthew Anderson‘s 84 to lift them to 229 all out.

Anderson, batting at four, faced 94 balls and sent 11 of them to the boundary. He and opener, Akhil Challa, who made 35, put together an 89-run third wicket partnership, which left Saints on 100/3 after Challa’s departure.

Lower down the order, Didier le Roux (22), Matthew Katzenstein (25), and Tendai Kadyamadare (24), helped to push St Stithians beyond 200. Potch Gim, however, claimed the last three wickets without the addition of a run.

Damian Kruger bowled well, picking up 3/25 in eight overs, while Bernard Judels brought the Saints’ innings to an end and finished with 2/11 from 2.2. Henré Cronje took 2/62 in 10.

Potch Gim opted to move opening batsman, Christivan Coetzer, down the order to four after he missed out earlier in the festival, and that paid off. Unfortunately for the North West side, though, their top three were removed for single figure scores.

Coetzer, meanwhile, launched four sixes and hit three fours in his 44 from only 33 deliveries. The problem for Potch Gim was that only two other batsmen made it into the teens, and 13 from Henré Cronje was the next best score.

It was a strong collective bowling effort from St Stithians. Zaakir Hanslo nabbed 3/21 in 7.4 overs with his spin, while Akhil Challa snapped up 2/4 in two, Nqaba Matunda returned 2/19 in three, and Tajandra Naidu claimed 2/23 in five.

In only 25.4 overs, Potchefstroom Gimnasium was bowled out for 113.

SA u19 Women defeat CSA Youth XI to maintain unbeaten start to Youth T20 Tri-Series

Karabo Meso and Mieke van Voorst during their partnership in the second match of the Youth T20 Tri-Series between the SA U19 Women and the CSA Youth XI in Durban (CSA)

DURBAN: The South African under-19 Women produced a clinical display to overcome the Cricket South Africa (CSA) Youth XI by 11 runs in a shortened second match of the Youth T20 Tri-Series held at the Chatsworth Oval in Durban on Saturday.

Proteas Women wicketkeeper batter Karabo Meso top-scored for the U19s, delivering a 23-ball 36 (5 fours) to help push her side to 78/6 in 10 overs, with CSA Youth XI captain Nthabiseng Nini taking outstanding figures of four for 15 in her two overs.

In reply, the SA U19 bowlers did well to limit their opponents’ scoring options, with the invitational outfit restricted to 67/3 despite Jemma Botha’s unbeaten 24 off 22 balls (2 fours).

Following a lengthy delay to the start of the match caused by overnight rain, the second T20 was reduced to a 10-over contest. The SA U19 Women were asked to bat first and endured an early setback, slipping to 16/2 after two overs as openers Chris-Mari Bezuidenhout and Ashley Barnard were both dismissed without scoring.

The hosts recovered well through a vital 46-run partnership for the third wicket between Meso and Mieke van Voorst (23). The stand was broken in the eighth over when Meso played onto her stumps off the bowling of Jeze Campher (1/7), leaving South Africa on 62/3.

In search of a strong finish, the under-19s took on more risk in the closing stages, but Nini struck three times in the final over, dismissing Van Voorst, Ashleigh van Wyk (0) and Miya Lalor (5) for just three runs, as South Africa concluded their innings on 78/6.

Having been set a target of 79 in 60 balls for victory, the CSA Youth XI lost an early wicket when Simone Lourens (4) was bowled by Cayleigh Wanckel (1/17) with the fifth ball of the innings.

The chase suffered a further setback two overs later, as Shelfa Mukhari (1 / 3) trapped Maria van der Vyfer (4) LBW to reduce the batting side to 18/2.

Although Botha and Chanel Venter (18) combined for 24 runs for the third wicket, the required boundaries proved hard to come by for the Youth XI. The breakthrough eventually came via the bowling of Anelisa Mhlongo (1/19), removing Venter in the seventh over to leave the invitational 42/3.

Botha was then joined by Deidre van Rensburg (10*), and while the pair shared an unbroken 25-run partnership for the fourth wicket, it was not enough to overhaul the target as the SA U19 Women secured an 11-run victory.

The third fixture of the Youth T20 Tri-Series will take place on Monday, 12 January, with the CSA Youth XI going up against Zimbabwe.

The action will be streamed live on CSA’s YouTube page from 13h00.

Lezanné Vermaak sal weer ‘n prominente rol as fisioterapeut speel.

Hy sal in 2026 Die Hoërskool Menlopark se agterlyn brei.

Paarl Boys’ High vs Hoërskool Hans Moore

Paarl Boys’ High ended their HJS Festival with a 50 percent win rate after recording an impressive 48-run win over Hoërskool Hans Moore in a 50-over contest played on Brugstraat’s A Field on Friday.

The hosts won the toss and opted to bat. All the way down the batting order, at nine, Ullrich Drotschie showed fierce determination to stick around for the innings’ top score of 35 off 48 deliveries, which included two fours and a six. His effort helped Boishaai to 185 all out.

In the run chase, in-form opener, Xavier van Biljon, stood firm, striking six fours and three maximums in his 57 off 56. The batting all-rounder, who also took 2/42 with the ball, ended up being awarded the man of the match for his contributions.

Despite his fine all-round effort, Moories came up well short of the hosts’ total, being dismissed for 137 after some brilliant Boishaai bowling.

AB Jacobs took 4/24 in six overs, and Reese Petersen claimed 4/24 in three, to seal the deal.

Stellenberg High vs Grey High XI

Stellenberg High made it four wins from four matches with another win on Friday.

After the toss fell their way at home in their T20 against the Grey High XI, Stellies‘ opener Roux Wasserman wasted no time in turning up the heat, blasting five fours in a rapid 26 off 13 balls.

In at three, Michael Amoedo replicated that score, but his knock included two fours and two sixes.

As the expression goes, “the candle that burns half as bright only lasts half as long” and, after those two batmen were removed, the Jade Brigade ran out of steam, sliding to 132 all out in 19.5 overs.

Nathan Trytsman‘s 3/14 in four overs led the Grey XI’s bowling effort, and his modest 14 runs proved to be their highest score when they batted.

Jan-Jak Alberts delivered a wounding 3/19 as the visitors were knocked over for only 81 after 18.4 overs, resulting in a 51-run win for Stellenberg.

    Somerset College vs Hoërskool Garsfontein

The Taberer Oval served as the 50-over battleground for Somerset College and the visiting Hoërskool Garsfontein.

The home team won the toss and went in for a bat, spending 46.2 overs at the crease to score 137 all out, which included 25 from opener Owethu Moyi.

Reinhard Niebuhr was at the heart of the Garsies bowling attack, capturing 4/14 in 10 overs.

In pursuit of a humble total, Wikus du Preez did what good openers do. He stuck around until the end of the Garsfontein innings, hitting four fours in a 105-ball stay that brought him an unbeaten 64.

With Du Preez providing the foundation, Garsies claimed a fourth victory on the trot when they reached 138/5 after 38 overs.

Hoërskool Parel Vallei vs Hoërskool Marais Viljoen

Chris Hughes and Divan Sander were monumental for Hoërskool Parel Vallei (PV) in their home T20 bout against Hoërskool Marais Viljoen.

PV elected to bat after winning the toss and the top order duo turned that into a very good decision. Hughes punched eight fours in his innings of 58 off 47 balls, while Sander cracked five fours and two sixes in his 69 off 49. Together, they added a hasty 115 runs off 81 balls for the third wicket.

In response, the Alberton residents mustered 108 all out in 19.3 overs, with Matthew Bothma‘s 25 their highest individual score.

Daniel Leisegang and Imtiaz Oliver recorded figures of 2/25 each as Parel Vallei finished the festival with two wins and two losses.

Westville Boys’ High vs Hoërskool Noordheuwel

Playing next door to the hosts, Paarl Boys’ High, on Brugstraat’s B Field, Westville Boys’ High, the KZN Coastal Switch Schools SA20 champions, powered their way to a seven-wicket T20 victory over Hoërskool Noordheuwel.

The Krugersdorp boys continued the trend of deciding to bat first after winning the toss and they did a decent job, led by Wander Roolvink, who entertained with three fours and two maximums in his strong contribution of 59 off 46 balls. At the end of their overs, Nories had tallied 152/5.

Griffins‘ opener and captain Kyle McGough was phenomenal in the run chase. He thrashed six fours and went aerial and over the boundary an astounding nine times in his fiery and unbeaten 101 off only 46 deliveries.

Largely due to his excellence, the KZN side rocketed to 153/3 in only 13.2 overs to pick up an impressive victory.

    Summarised Scorecards

Paarl Boys’ High 185/10 (Ullrich Drotschie 35, Reese Petersen 23, Aden Batt 21*, Extras 21; Stephan Vermaak 2/5, Xavier van Biljon 2/42); Hoërskool Hans Moore 137/10 (Xavier van Biljon 57, Stephan Vermaak 35; AB Jacobs 4/24, Reese Petersen 4/24). Paarl Boys’ High won by 48 runs.

Hoërskool Parel Vallei 170/5 (Divan Sander 69, Chris Hughes 58, Extras 25); Hoërskool Marais Viljoen 108/10 (Matthew Bothma 25; Dirk van Zyl 2/14, Chris Hughes 2/17, Imtiaz Olivier 2/25, Daniel Leisegang 2/25). Parel Vallei won by 62 runs.

Jaca guides Graeme College to win, Sheard stars in Kingswood victory

Olo Jaca scored an unbeaten century to help Graeme College secure their first win at the Makhanda Cricket Festival – an impressive 143-run defeat of Steyn City School – in a Time Cricket match on Somerset Field on Friday.

Keegan Smallbone, the Steyn City captain, won the toss and elected to bowl first.

Graeme College accepted the challenge and put 235/9 on the scoreboard before their bowlers overpowered Steyn City’s batsmen and bowled them out for a meagre 92 runs.

Jaca arrived at the crease in the 15th over with his team in trouble. They were on 48/6 and in need of rescue. He obliged.

The number eight batsman seized the moment and struck 10 fours and a single six in an unbeaten 100 from 152 deliveries. He also shared an unbroken 78-run last-wicket partnership with Ibenathi Kondile (37*), which proved to be the highest stand of the match.

Kurt Losch put up a great fight with the ball for Steyn City and finished the innings with 4/53 from 15 overs. Unfortunately, for the Randburg school, Jordan Damons upstaged Losch’s fine effort with a four-wicket haul of his own, capturing 4/17 in six overs as he ran through the visitors’ batting lineup.

Damons enjoyed good support from Andrew Muir, who snagged 3/10 in six overs, and Luphelo Mdyesha, who returned 2/12 from 7.1.

Max Burroughs top-scored for Steyn City with a 53-ball 38, while Josh Michau was the only other player to reach double digits, making 14 from 25 balls.

    Peterhouse vs Kingswood

Simon Sheard delivered a polished all-round performance that brought cheer to Kingswood‘s home supporters after a hard-fought two-wicket win over Peterhouse at City Lords.

After Isaac Allott, the Peterhouse captain, called correctly at the toss and elected to bat first, the visitors made a steady start, courtesy of a 40-run opening stand between Ndiriwashe Munatsirei and Nicholas Orphanides (18). However, the wheels came off after that partnership ended.

Munatsirei held on and fought his way to 51 from 95 balls, but he received little support from the rest of the Peterhouse batting lineup, with no others making it to 20.

Sheard was Kingswood’s most successful bowler, knocking over 5/32 in in eight overs as Peterhouse tallied 154 all out. Daniel Jakins, meanwhile, contributed 3/40.

Unlike Peterhouse, Kingswood didn’t enjoy a firm foundation at the top of their order, losing early wickets. However, their batsmen chipped in with enough runs to keep them in the contest.

Towards the end, the balance tilted Kingswood’s way when Sheard (48*) and Rogan Goliath (17*) joined forces for the ninth wicket, mounting an unbeaten 45-run partnership that saw them home.

Michaelhouse enjoyed the better of their clash with St Alban’s College and owned a 78-run first innings’ lead in a drawn contest, while Connor Holder went big for St Andrew’s College, scoring 127 in their draw against St David’s Marist Inanda.

    Summarised Scorecards

Graeme College 235/9 (Olo Jaca 100*, Enrique Strydom 39; Kurt Losch 4/53). Steyn City 92/10 (Max Burroughs 38, Josh Michau 14; Jordan Damons 4/17, Andrew Muir 3/10). Graeme College won by 143 runs.

Peterhouse 154/10 (Ndiriwashe Munatsirei 51, Nicholas Orphanides 18; Simon Sheard 5/32, Daniel Jakins 3/40). Kingswood 156/8 (Simon Sheard 48*, Chad Roodt 24; Cameron Oosthuizen 3/24, Nicholas Orphanides 3/28). Kingswood won by two wickets.

    St Alban’s 85/10 (Kyle Block 13, Reabetswe Mokoka 13; Liam O’Dwyer 3/13, Nathan Simons 2/12). Michaelhouse 162/7 dec. (Cody Sander 48, Victor North 38; Will Hewitt 3/29, Jesse Eckerd 2/23). St Alban’s 22/2 (Thomas Hall 13*, Graydon Leslie 1/6, Liam O’Dwyer 1/7). Match drawn.

St Andrew’s College 266/6 (Connor Holder 127, Callum Taggart 32; Maru Challies 1/29, Kairav Koobair 1/31). St David’s Marist Inanda 197/9 (Sohail Seonath 63, Khutso Sekgobela 53; Rhys Wiblin 3/40, James Baenhorst 2/29). Match drawn.

Pretoria Boys High Basketball Festival set for exciting finale on Saturday

Afternoon rain stopped a vibrant and exciting symphony of energy on Friday, the second day of the Pre-season Basketball Festival at Pretoria Boys High. But, before it fell, the action was even more captivating than it had been on Thursday.

PHBS A made their mark on the court, winning all of their group matches.

They followed up wins over St Alban’s College and Crawford College (Pretoria) on the opening day with an impressive dismantling of St John’s College A, romping to a decisive 28-5 victory.

St Alban’s College also performed exceptionally well in their final group match, cruising to a 66-20 win over Crawford College.

One of the most eagerly awaited clashes of the festival took place in Pool B, where ESCA faced off against King Edward VII School (KES). Both had won their two matches on Thursday.

Their clash didn’t disappoint. High expectations were met and stirring skills displayed in a back-and-forth contest that ended in a narrow 32-31 win for ESCA.

In another Group B game, The King’s School Linbro Park picked up a comfortable 35-10 win over St John’s College B.

In Pool C, St David’s Marist Inanda edged out Jeppe High School for Boys, snatching a narrow 40-38 win, while St Stithians College had an easier time against PBHS B, winning 31-10.

The festival concludes on Saturday as scheduled, despite the rain interruptions experienced on Friday afternoon.

Marais, Van Aarde tons highlight Grey Festival’s two-day declaration games

The Grey Festival, taking place in Gqeberha this year – it alternates between Gqeberha and Bloemfontein – opened with two-day declaration matches on Thursday and Friday, and two of the big winners were set up for victory by a century from one of their batsmen.

    Grey High vs Kearsney College

After being sent out to bat by the hosts on Grey High’s Pollock Oval, Kearsney College struggled to build effective partnerships.

Run scoring came slowly as wickets fell regularly and, after 54.2 overs, they were all out for only 129.

Batting eighth in the order, Daniel Miskey made the visitors’ top score of the match, hitting eight fours in his 40 off 68 balls.

Anré Schoeman was largely responsible for Kearsney’s batting struggles, collecting figures of 4/43 from 11 overs.

Opener Cullen Marais got Grey off to a great start in their reply, blasting 13 fours and a six in an outstanding 107 off 121 deliveries. Arriving after the fall of the first wicket, Connor Parry kept the momentum rolling with 76, while the fifth man in, Logan Goddard-Ford, tallied an unbeaten 82.

Leg spinner Rivan Moodley was electric for the Greyhounds, snaring 6/65 across a lengthy 23.5 overs. Despite his excellent effort, Grey High took a big 182-run lead on the first innings after tallying a mighty 311 all out in 75.5 overs.

In the Botha’s Hill boys’ second innings, Moodley and Keegan De Jager smashed three fours apiece in their contributions of 23 runs each. But matters went swiftly downhill after their dismissals.

Logan Groch was chiefly responsible for the slide, capturing 5/11 in 9.1 overs, but Micha Wessels, with 2/12, and Matthew Tinley, with 2/25, also played their part as Kearsney tumbled to 80 all out, leaving Grey High the handsome winners by an innings and 102 runs.

Die Hoërskool Menlopark vs Namibia Invitational

Victoria Park High played host to the showdown between Die Hoërskool Menlopark and the Namibia Invitational outfit.

The Pretoria locals visited the crease first and produced 154 all out in 56.3 overs. In a battling batting effort, number eight batsman, Heinrich Claassen, topped the scoring stats, making a conservative 25 off 52 deliveries.

The Namibian side’s opening bowler, Waldo Smith, produced a strong return of 4/17 from only four overs. Erik Lintvelt was a touch costly, but he snared some vital wickets in the Menlo middle order, claiming 3/83 in 17.3 overs.

Like Menlo, the Invitational side had to rely on their lower order to boost their innings. Dan Brassel, at nine, and Rowan van Vuuren, at 10, provided a 52-run ninth wicket partnership to take their team past their opposition’s total.

Brassel hit a steady 38 off 54 balls, while Van Vuuren struck a solid 41 off 46, with both cracking three fours and two sixes, which helped the Namibians to 200 all out and a 46-run first innings’ lead.

Parkies‘ second innings didn’t start well. However, Monré Koekemoer, their seventh man to the crease, stopped the opposition bowlers’ flow of wickets. He came up only four runs shy of a century, taking 169 balls to score 96, which included seven fours and three sixes. Still, despite his valiant effort, Menlopark was all out for 207 after 74.4 overs.

While Koekemoer starred with the bat, Jovan Hartman was superb with the ball for the Namibia Invitational XI, knocking over 7/63 from 17 overs.

The Namibians, then, chased down their 162-run victory target with eight wickets to spare, finishing on 166/2 after 34 overs.

Openers, Adriaan Coetzee and Tiaan van der Merwe set up the win with an 88-run first wicket partnership. Coetzee was undefeated at the end, having struck three fours and a six in his 60 off 101, while Van Der Merwe walloped four fours and six sixes in his 58 off only 45 deliveries.

Pearson High vs St. Andrew’s School

Like Grey High, St. Andrew’s School needed only one innings to secure victory, outplaying Pearson High at Pearson.

Batting first, after Saints‘ skipper Reuben van Aarde called the coin flip incorrectly, the home side posted 140 all out, with Daniel Smithdorff and Jude Septoo both providing 37 runs.

Three of the Saints‘ bowlers earned two wickets apiece, with Nikhil Sukraj’s 2/10 in nine overs being the neatest return from the trio.

Van Aarde, batting at four, then demonstrated patience and grit in compiling 116 off 241 deliveries in a Test-like performance. He hit 12 fours while Schalk van Rensburg contributed six fours and a six in his 41. Between them, the rest of the team added only two fours and a six.

Besides those two players, the Saints’ batsmen offered little, and they were all out for 223. Pearson’s new ball bowlers, Aiden Mitchell and Jaydan Ward, did well, claiming 3/19 and 2/20 respectively.

Trailing by 83 runs on the first innings, Pearson collapsed in their second visit to the crease, scraping only 45 all out in 22 overs.

Opening bowler Heindré Serfontein set Saints on course for an emphatic victory, bagging 3/8 in six overs, while Nikhil Sukraj and FG Botha both took 2/3; the only difference being that Sukraj achieved those figures in four overs, while Botha did it in two.

In the end, St Andrew’s School won by an innings and 38 runs.

Framesby vs St Charles College Colts XI

Josh Nicholson scored an unbeaten half-century, and Matthew Buckley claimed a five-wicket haul to help the St Charles College Colts XI turn things around and register a comfortable five-wicket win over Framesby in their Grey Cricket Festival declaration match at Framesby on Friday.

The KwaZulu-Natal side came into the second day on the back foot. They were six wickets down and trailing by 120 runs in their reply to Framesby’s first innings of 259 all out. However, the tailenders – Cohen Cameron (46), Angus Edkins (32), and Fabian da Rosa (20*) – breathed new life into the Saints‘ reply by adding 115 for the final two wickets.

Thanks to that resilient rearguard action, St Charles held a slender eight-run lead after the first innings, and that motivated Buckley to put on a show. He tore into Framesby’s middle and lower order, on his way capturing 6/29 from 12 overs, as the local side fell for only 90 in their second innings.

Buckley’s figures of 9/90 across the two innings were the best of the match. His heroics also set up Josh Nicholson to play a starring role with the bat.

After scoring a half-century in St Charles’s first innings, Nicholson cantered to an unbeaten 54 from 56 balls to steer Saints to 87/5 and a five-wicket win.

    Grey College vs Glenwood High

At the Old Grey Sports Club, Daniel Hattingh produced a brilliant all-round performance to lead Grey College to an emphatic nine-wicket win over Glenwood.

Hattingh, the Grey College captain, did not put a foot wrong in his decision-making throughout the match. After he won the toss and put Glenwood in to bat first, Jano Venter answered his skipper’s call and claimed a wicket in the first over to put the Bloemfontein boys on the front foot. They went on to bowl out Glenwood for 87 runs.

Hattingh, then, led Grey College’s reply with a breezy 67 from 69 balls. Aiden Dodd (49) and Divan Bezuidenhoudt (37) chipped in with valuable runs to help their side to an impressive 296 all out.

The second time around, Glenwood found their batting mojo through Akhiel Sinath (94) and Mishael Gunawardana (53). The duo’s half-centuries lifted the KZN side to 225 and that total would have been bigger if not for Hattingh’s impressive form with the ball. The Grey College captain sent down 9.4 overs and snared 4/25 to limit Glenwood’s lead.

It took Grey College only 3.1 overs of their second innings to chase down the 17 runs they required for victory. Bezuidenhoudt (15*) took charge of the chase and was with Christoph Bronn when victory was secured.

Jeppe High School for Boys vs Northwood

Northwood’s triple strike late on Thursday set them up for a win over Jeppe on Friday, with the Johannesburg side beginning the day on 5/3 and a lead of only 11 runs. The Knights picked up from where they had left off.

Ryan van Zyl led the way, knocking over 4/14, while his fellow seamer, Josh Mills, bagged 3/35 as Jeppe’s second innings ended on 105, with Lincoln Casias knock of 53 holding it together.

Luc Boyall, with 35, and Thomas Oosthuizen, with 30, then made pivotal contributions to guide the Durban side to a five-wicket win. Keagan Cockburn was the pick of the Jeppe bowlers, claiming 2/23.

    Selborne College vs Potchefstroom Volkskool

The clash between Selborne College and Potchefstroom Volkskool ended in an evenly contested draw.

Volkies led by a single run on the first innings – scoring 132 all out to Selborne’s 131 all out – but the East London school performed a better job at the crease in their second innings, totalling 252/8, with Matthew Hendry making 105. He enjoyed good support from Joshua Edwards, who chipped in with 61.

Handré de Beer turned in a good performance with the ball, snagging 3/27.

Volkskool, then, mustered 181/5 in their second innings, with Theunis Nel making 47 and Richard Kruger 33. Rosh Els claimed 2/26 after picking up 2/13 in the Potchefstroom school’s first innings.

St Andrew’s School vs Pearson High

The match between Pearson High and St Andrew’s School at Pearson came to a rather sudden end when the home team, trailing by 83 runs on the first innings, crumbled in their second knock and were skittled for only 45 runs, leaving the Bloemfontein side the winners by an innings and 38 runs.

Pearson tallied 140 all out in their first innings, with Daniel Smithdorff and Jude Septoo both scoring 37.

Saints‘ skipper, Reuben van Aarde, then led his side’s reply with a disciplined 116 from 242 balls, which included 12 fours. A useful 41 from Schalk van Rensburg helped the Bloem boys to 223 all out. Aiden Mitchell, with 3/19, was the best of the Pearson bowlers.

Unfortunately for the Gqeberha school, they floundered in their second innings, with no batsmen making it into double figures. They lasted only 22 overs as five of the six Saints’ bowlers took wickets cheaply.

Opening bowler, Heindré Serfontein, got the ball rolling, knocking back 3/8 from six overs, while the spin of Nikhil Sukraj and FG Botha brought both returns of 2/3. Sukraj finished with the miserly match figures of 4/13 from 13 overs.
