  • St. John’s College Easter Festival fixtures 2014

St. John’s College of Johannesburg’s annual Easter Festival could be the pick of the festivals held over Easter in the City of Gold. Some of South Africa’s top school teams Waterkloof of Pretoria, Paarl Boys’ High, Paul Roos Gimnasium of Stellenbosch and Nelspruit will all be in action.

Two international schools were included for the 2014-edition of the Easter Festival. They are Scots College of Australia and St. John’s College of Zimbabwe. Scots College which is situated in Sydney produced former Wallabies like Ken Catchpole, Tim Gavin, Tom Bowman, John Solomon and Warwick Waugh amongst others. St. John’s College of Harare has been a regular attendee at the festival.

Last year the clash between Waterkloof and Paarl Boys’ High on the final day of the festival was one of the highlights of the festival. This year the two teams won’t clash at the festival, but the match between Waterkloof and Paul Roos Gimnasium on the second day promises to be a cracker.

Eduan Keyter, Tiaan Schmulian (albei Affies), PJ Toerien, Franco Naude (albei Garsfontein), Luigy van Jaarsveld (Marlow Landbou), Curwin Bosch (Grey PE), Michael Andrade, Alex Jonker (albei Grey-kollege), Luwellyn Hein (Louis Botha), Gerhard Holtzhausen (Noord-Kaap), Jaco Coetzee, Morné Joubert (both Glenwood), Xolisa Guma (Maritzburg-kollege), Willem Massyn (Monument), Cyprian Ncomo (HTS Middelburg), Marco Janse van Vuuren (Transvalia), Herschel Jantjies, Edwill van der Merwe, Edrich Venter (almal Paul Roos), Keenan Abrahams (Paarl Gimnasium), Ivan Kuntz, Wynand McGlachlyn (albei Tygerberg), Adriaan Louw, Grant Williams (albei Westelike Provinsie).

  • Sean Erasmus oor sy nuwe uitdagings by Boishaai

Sean Erasmus oor sy nuwe uitdagings by Boishaai

Voorbereiding is alles!

“Ek het begin afrig omdat ek afgerig was deur ‘n great coach, man en rol model Herman Viljoen in Hoërskool Estcourt. Is daar iets lekkerder?

  • Grey College to meet Witteberg for the first time since 1998

Grey College and Witteberg of Bethlehem will meet each other on the rugby field for the first time since their encounter in the final of the Free State’s Administrator’s Cup in 1998. The team from Bloemfontein won this match at Goble Park in Behtlehem by 24-6.

The two teams will play each other in a curtain raiser for the FNB Varsity Cup match between the Shimlas and Madibaz at Shimlapark in the City of Roses on 17 March. The match between the University of the Free State and the Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University will be broadcasted live on SuperSport1.

In 1998 provincial players Jacques Claassens, JB Heckroodt, Lodie Britz and Roland Bernard played for Grey College. Cerneels Rautenbach who later played for the Leopards was the loosehead prop for Witteberg.

The only other curtain raiser in Bloemfontein at the Shimlas’ FNB Varisty Cup’s matches for 2014 is between Jim Fouche and Diamantveld of Kimberley on 24 February.

    The Scorers in 1998:

Grey College 24 (10) – Tries: Rudolph Froneman (2), Dandré Gerber. Conversions: Jacques Claassens (3). Penalty: Claassens. Witteberg 6 (3) – Penalties: Dries Human (2).

  • The Blitsbokke Champions and their alma maters

The Blitsbokke Champions and their alma maters

SpringbokSevensThe South African Sevens side passed New Zealand on the standings of the IRB Sevens Series with their 14-7 victory over them at the final of the USA leg of the series in Las Vegas. This was the Blitsbokke’s second successive tournament win. The Blitsbokke now lead the series with 78 points with the New Zealanders in second place with 77 points with still five tournaments to play.

True to School of Rugby‘s nature we are having a look at the schools the individual players attended. Two schools, Grey College of Bloemfontein and Harmony Sportsacademy of Virginia both have two representatives in the squads that was victorious at Las Vegas and in Port Elizabeth. Grey College’s representatives are Chris Dry and Philip Snyman. Dry played most of his rugby in Grey College’s second side the Cherries, while Snyman did represent the school’s first XV as well as the Free State’s Craven Week side.

The Harmony Sport Academy’s Cecil Afrika and Branco du Preez are two products of the @lantic Sevens series. Both of them played in the inaugural @lantic Series. Another player from the central region is Seabelo Senatla who played scrumhalf for Riebeeckstad. Riebeeckstad also partly produced Springbok centre, Wynand Olivier. He left Riebies for Affies in Pretoria in grade 10. Senatla replaced Cheslin Kolbe (Brackenfell) for the Las Vegas tournament.

The inspirational captain of the Blitsbokke is a product of SACS in Cape Town. The veteran Frankie Horne matriculated at Hugenote in Wellington. The other two players who was part of the squad in both the tournament are Werner Kok (Nelspruit HS) and Sampie Mastriet (HTS Drostdy). Kok scored the winning try against New Zealand in Las Vegas.

Kwagga Smith (HTS Middelburg) and Steven Hunt (Grey Boys’ High School) played in Port Elizabeth but missed the tournament in the United States. Stephan Dippenaar (Paul Roos Gimnasium) and Rosko Speckman (Mary Waters) replaced them.

The coach of the Blitsbokke, Neil Powell was captain of Sentraal in Bloemfontein when they were crowned champions of the Free State Administrator’s Cup in 1995.
