  • SA Schools squad to face England announced

SA Schools coach Chris October on Wednesday announced his squad to face England in their opening International Under-18 Series clash on Friday at the City Park Stadium in Cape Town.

Western Province and Paarl Gym No8 Rikus Bothma will lead the squad which features seven players who took part of the victorious SA Schools team last season. These players are the Du Preez twins, Daniel and Jean-Luc, Ox Nche, Justin Philips, Duhan van der Merwe, Warrik Gelant, Abongile Nonkontwana and Jurie Linde.

The squad boasts a fine balance of players from the traditional rugby schools in the country with Afrikaans Hoër Seuns (Affies), Outeniqua High School and Paarl Gymnasium each featuring three players.

The Paarl Gym duo of Bothma and Jacques Vermeulen, in particular, will rely on their familiarity with each other’s style of play to make their presence felt in a quality loose trio, while the powerful tight five will be determined to dominate in the scrums against the settled England side.

Among the backs Philips’ experience at this level and his effective distribution skills will be invaluable in guiding the team, while talented wings Grant Hermanus and Duhan van der Merwe both showed their ability to spot gaps and score tries at the Coca-Cola Craven Week, which could make them key figures on attack.

Looking ahead at the clash against England, October was optimistic about his team’s chances of starting the series on a high note. He hoped the players would showcase their talent in what he anticipated would be a challenging clash.

“I was impressed with the players’ attitude at training this week and we expect them to transfer that onto the field,” said October. “But we are under no illusions about the challenge ahead. We do not know a lot about the teams we will be facing in the next few days, but we are aware of the fact that they come off a Six Nations campaign, so they have played a few matches together already. With regards to England specifically I chatted to their coach after last year’s tournament and he mentioned that this year’s team would have been together for three years, so they should be a cohesive unit.

“But that said, South Africans generally boast immense pride and we have worked hard to gel as a team, and I believe we have achieved that. There is no doubt this match is going to be tough, but we are looking forward to it.”

In the other matches Under-18 matches on Friday, Italy meet the Western Province Craven Week XV at 12h30 and France go up against Wales at 14h00.

  • Kwaggas to face Noord-Kaap in 90th celebrations match

Outeniqua High School will play Noord-Kaap High School in George on Saturday 10 August 2013 in the next Mutual & Federal Premier Interschools that will be televised LIVE on SuperSport 1 at 12:55.

Mutual & Federal Premier Interschools is a series of 12 matches, which feature the highest profile and most traditional interschool rugby rivalries, from South Africa’s top rugby schools, broadcast live on SuperSport from April to August.

Schoolboy rugby has served as one of the cornerstones of domestic rugby dating back more than a century, and true to its slogan “Honouring Heritage. Playing for the Future”, Mutual & Federal Premier Interschools is about History, Heritage and Tradition. The series, now in its second year, is expected to grow even stronger.

The Mutual & Federal Premier Interschools stories are further captured in 12 magazine shows which preview all the games and provide historical overviews of these traditional schools and highlight other academic, cultural and sporting achievements.

Being invited to play your hosts at their 90th celebrations is enough recognition of a school’s prowess during the last couple of years and thus Noord-Kaap High can feel proud of this honour bestowed upon them by

Outeniqua High. This can almost be listed as an Interprovincial match between Griquas and SWD as both schools had 12 players representing their province at Craven Week 2013. Although the team from Kimberley is not having the best of seasons according to their own high standards, they are still a very formidable team and rated as one of the Top 30 in the country. They have regularly appeared in the Top 10 rankings of SA Schools in the last few years and with 12 Griquas Craven Week players they will still pose a serious challenge to the home team.

The Kwaggas, as Outeniqua High is more affectionately known, is in contrast having one of their best seasons so far in the school’s history. Having only lost to Paarl Gimnasium so far and won against Grey College and Paarl Boys’ High, they have collected some serious scalps along the way in 2013. With four SA School’s players in their backline you can expect them to play an expansive game and bring these players more into play. They can however also rough it upfront with the best of them and if Noord-Kaap High prefers that type of gameplan they will find Outeniqua High up to it and more than capable of holding their own.

They have only played each other once before in the last five years and that was in 2011 when Noord-Kaap High downed Outeniqua High 43-22. The home team thus have a score to settle with the boys from Kimberley.

  • SA Schools team begins preparations for International U18 series

SA under-20 coach Dawie Theron and Stormers defence coach Jacques Nienaber offered valuable insights as the SA Schools team took the training field preparing for the International Under-18 Series starting on Friday, which features England, France and Wales.

The squad gathered in Cape Town on Sunday and had two high-intensity field trainings sessions on Monday under the guidance of coaches Chris October and Roean Bezuidenhoudt to kick off their preparations.

The intensity of their training sessions lifted a notch on Tuesday despite the glum weather in Cape Town, as they look to emulate the team’s success last season, in which they won all three of their matches against the same teams.

The SA Schools team will face England at the City Park stadium in Cape Town on Friday in their opening match. This will be followed by clashes against France in George and Wales in Wellington next Tuesday and Saturday respectively.

October was delighted with the quality and intensity of the team’s first few training sessions and said he looked forward to their opening clash.

“I am pleased with our early preparations,” said October. “The foundation has been laid for the tournament, so now we have to build on this as the week progresses. It is pleasing to see the players’ commitment and it is fantastic to have SA Under-20 coach Dawie Theron with us as he provides good guidance.

“It is also fantastic to have Jacques Nienaber assisting. His reputation and track record speaks volumes, and to have one of the best defence coaches in the world working with these players is a treat. SARU has really taken us by the hand this year with the professionals they have brought in to assist, and I’d like to thank them for that. I am looking forward to the series.”

Having had sufficient time to work with his squad, October was pleased with the attitude among the players and had high hopes for them.

“Our motto is ‘boots on switch on’ so the players know they have to work as hard as they can when they train because we expect the same attitude during the matches,” said the coach. “The squad is focused on the task at hand and all of the players are hungry to learn, which is fantastic because this is a golden opportunity for them. One of our main objectives is to create an environment in which they will feel free to showcase their talent and make their presence felt, and I believe we will achieve that.”

Unfortunately injuries ruled Western Province hooker Daniel du Plessis and lock JD Schickerling out of the squad, which resulted in call-ups for RG Snyman from the Blue Bulls and the Valke’s Marco Janse van Vuren.

There were, however, two new niggles on Monday with Boland centre Leolin Zass and Eastern Province fullback Malcolm Jaer picking up groin strains. A final call on their fitness will be made later in the week.
Meanwhile, England and Wales arrived in Cape Town on Tuesday morning, while France touched down in SA this past weekend. The Italian under-18 team also arrived in SA over the weekend and will participate in a series of matches against the Western Province, Boland and SWD Coca-Cola Craven Week teams.

    International Under-18 Series fixtures:

9 August – Italy vs WP Craven Week XV – City Park Stadium, Cape Town – 12h30
France vs Wales – City Park Stadium, Cape Town – 14h00
SA Schools vs England – City Park Stadium, Cape Town – 15h30

13 August – Italy vs SWD Craven Week XV – Outeniqua Park, George – 14h00
England vs Wales – Outeniqua Park, George – 16h00
SA Schools vs France – Outeniqua Park, George – 18h00

17 August – Italy vs Boland Craven Week XV – Boland Stadium, Wellington – 12h30

  • Oakdale Landbou bo in ENB Classic Clash

Paarl Gimnasium vs. Paarl Boys’ High

The big Paarl derby again commences this week culminating in the showdown of the two rugby first teams at 16h00 at the Faure Street Stadium on Saturday 3 August. In-between there will be functions and re-union get togethers and old friends and foe’s reminiscing about the days gone by. The first salvo’s on the rugby field are fired on the Wednesday evening as the two Old Boy teams lock horns in what can only be described as a friendly but fierce game.

Thursday afternoon sees the “Goffels” and “Hommels” (G and H teams) playing their own unique brand of rugby before Friday morning when it kicks into the business end of the weekend. This is the time when the two schools have their Big Brags in the school hall. Here the Rugby and Hockey warriors that will represent their respective teams on the Saturday are introduced and the first teams get capped for Interschools.

There are only four rugby matches played on the Saturday at Faure street. The games start at 12:00 with the u15A match, followed by u/16A, the Seccies and then the main match of the Firsts. On the Friday afternoon the rest of the teams will battle it out on the fields of the host who this year is Paarl Gymnasium. The two main attractions on the Friday afternoon is the u/14A match and the “main” match of the Third teams or the “Chiefs” and “Chippies” as they are known among the locals.

This is all but an appetizer for the Big One!…Arguably the biggest schoolboy match in the world! Paarl Gimnasiumvs Paarl Boys’ High!. Old Boys and supporters come from afar to witness yet again one of the toughest rugby matches a schoolboy can hope to be involved in. History shows that it is always a close game between these two rivals with the average winning margin since 1915 being only five points.

    Paarl Gim team

The Paarl Gim team being introduced during the 2008 Interschools

The first matches started in 1915 when masters, schoolboys and Old boys all played together. This was the format up to 1927 after which was decided that the Interschools matches should only comprise of schoolboys and the current format as we know today started officially in 1929.

    Paarl Gim 1922

The last Paarl Gim team to include Old Boys and Masters – 1927

The 2013 edition will thus be the 96th match and the 83rdInterschools game to be played between the schools. Ten of these matches were drawn with the last one being in 2010 and three of them being 0-0 draws. Very tough and hard rugby indeed.

Tough and Uncompromising – Handre Pollard tackling Johan Peens 2011

The 2013 version will not be any different it seems. Although Paarl Gimnasium is seen to be the clear favourites due to the great season they are having compared to Paarl Boys’ High, this is Interschools and the playing fields are even! Paarl Gimnasium started the season like a house on fire and first caught the eye at the Kearnsey festival where they demolished the pride of KZN schools on a canter. They seem to have no weaknesses anywhere in the team and are especially rich in the loose forward department. Here SA Schools Captain and 8th man RikusBothma and fellow SA Schools teammate, No 7 Jacques Vermeulen have been terrorising opposing teams since the 2012 season and forms a formidable trio with hardworking Gareth Cilliers. Paarl Gimnasium will miss the services of man giant JD Schickerling, their SA Schools lock, who is injured and will miss out on this match. Live wire scrumhalf Brendon Nell is key to giving the backs good quick ball where out on the wing SA Schools player Grant Hermanus will appreciate some space if given any. Hermanus is also a deadly accurate goal kicker.

    Boishaai on the charge

The awesome sight of a Paarl Boys’ High Pack on the drive – 2011

Paarl Boys’ High is not having the greatest of seasons according to their own high standards, having already lost four games and not reaching the same heights of 2012 so far. Losses to Waterkloof, Outeniqua, Glenwood and Grey College have seen them change captain’s midway through the season. After the Glenwood loss, there was a radical change in personnel and new captain Thomas Du Toit took over the leadership role. This culminated in what looked like better cohesion within the team and they racked up some very good wins.

They showed great character in coming back from 20 points down against Grey Bloem to within a whisker of winning the game in Bloemfontein. Du Toit leading from the front with hooker Daniel du Plessis being the talisman that ignited the comeback. Both Du Toit and Du Plessis represented WP at Cravenweek and both got picked for SA Schools team. Sadly though, Du Plessis injured his ankle in the final game at Cravenweek and won’t be able to participate in Saturday’s Interschools match.

The Paarl Boys’ High team though, is a very balanced one with a good pack of forwards and a very speedy backline. They might not have the individual brilliance of some of the Paarl Gimnasium players, but as a whole this team knows how to fight and how to grind out a win from difficult positions. In Fullback, Dante van der Merwe they have a mercurial runner who can instantly change defence to attack and Paarl Gimnasium will be very aware of his running ability from the back.

  • Landboudal behaal seldsame sege in Upington
