Preview – St Stithian’s College Easter Festival 2017

saintsThe Easter Festival held by St Stithian’s College in Johannesburg is the oldest of all the rugby festivals over the Easter-weekend. Saints started their festival back in 1983 and no less than 33 international rugby players have taking part during the 34 years the festival has been running.

The first player to make his international debut was Brendan Cotterall who represented Zimbabwe at the Rugby World Cup in 1991. He played for Maritzburg College during 1985’s festival. Pieter Muller (Grey College, 1987), Gavin Johnson (Capricorn High, 1984), Lance Sherrell (St Stithian’s College, 1984), Ruben Kruger (Grey College, 1987), Russel Bennett (St Andrew’s College, 1990), Robbie Kempson (Queen’s College, 1990), Warren Brosnihan (Northlands Boys’ High, 1989), John Smit (Pretoria Boys’ High, 1994), Joe van Niekerk (King Edward VII, 1997), Bakkies Botha (HTS Middelburg, 1997), Hanyani Shimange (Rondebosch Boys’ High, 1995), Schalk Burger (Paarl Gimnasium, 2000), and Pierre Spies (Affies, 2003) are just a few of the Springboks who played at this Easter Festival over the years.

Other internationals like Michael Catt (England and Grey High School, 1988), Juan Grobler (USA and Kingswood College, 1992), Greg Somerville (New Zealand and Dale College, 1995), Steven Hall (France and Dale College, 1989/90), Andy Marinos (Wales and Northwood, 1990), Hal Luscombe (Wales and Bishops, 1998/99) and Brad Barritt (England and Kearsney College, 2004) also started making a name for themself on the rugby field during the festival.

The hosts will play Michaelhouse in the main match of this year’s Easter Festival on Saturday. Saints first match will be tomorrow against Graeme College and they will play Maritzburg College on Monday.

Grey High School of Port Elizabeth will play Westville Boys’ High of Durban in the main match of the first day. The clash between SACS and Michaelhouse on the opening day also promises to produces some fireworks.

St Andrews College of Grahamstown will only play in the first two days of the festival. They open up a great opportunity of Pretoria THS to show their worth on the final day. Pretoria THS will take on Graeme College on Monday which will be a very good test for them.

Five players to watch at the St John’s Easter Festival

NewsG FranckeHornThe 22nd St John’s College Easter Festival proudly sponsored by Standard Bank will kick-off on Thursday in Johannesburg. School of Rugby takes a look at the five players we believe are the ones to look out for during this festival of rugby.

There will be more than five players in action during the Easter Festival that will be strong contenders to make one of the two SA Schools’ sides that will be chosen after the Coca-Cola Craven Week that will be hosted later during the year at St Stithian’s College in Johannesburg.

The match not to be missed at the St John’s College Easter Festival is the main match on Monday between Paarl Boys’ High and Affies from Pretoria. Boishaai lost their first match in three years and after racking up 41 consecutive victories against Christchurch Boys’ High (36-38) on their recent tour through New Zealand.

Boishaai ended Affies’ hopes for an unbeaten season last year during Wildeklawer with a 29-25 victory in which their fullback, Gianni Lombaard, scored all their points. This match was one of the top matches during the 2016 schoolboy season. Affies will however be without their outside centre, Marnus Potgieter, due to injury for this re-match.

The main match of the second day between Helpmekaar and Paul Roos Gimnasium also promises to be a highlight of the festival.

Affies have two sons of former Springboks in their squad in Wiehan Bezuidenhout (prop) and Ruben Meiring (wing). Bezuidenhout is the son of former Bok-prop Christo Bezuidenhout, while Meiring’s father in the former Bok-centre FA Meiring. Paul Roos also has a former Springboks’ son in their midst in Brendan Venter. Venter is like his father, Brendan, also a centre. Brendan sr. was recently added to the Springbok management team and also held the position as defence coach of Italy’s national team during this year’s Six Nations.

Here are our five players to watch:

    Francke Horn (Paarl Boys’ High)

Paarl Boys’ High’s captain and No. 8, Francke Horn, was without a doubt the standout player during last year’s Coca-Cola Academy Week in Durban. Horn got a call-up to represent the South African Schools’ A-side after his performances at the week. Horn scored five tries in Western Province’s three matches at the Academy Week which included a hat-trick against South Western Districts on the opening day of the tournament.

Horn’s father, Francois, represented the Boland and still holds the record for the most points in a season with the 355 points he scored for the Wine Farmers during the 1996 season. Francois Horn played fullback for Boland.

Francke Horn stands 1.88m tall and weighs a burly 93kg. He is an excellent ball carrier and leader.

    NewsG MarkSnymanMark Snyman (Helpmekaar)

Snyman also represent the SA Schools’ A-side in 2016 and will be a strong contender to wear the number six jumper for the SA Schools’ side this year. Snyman is a terrier at the breakdown and also a factor with the ball in hand.

Snyman represents his school’s athletics team in the 200m sprint as well as in the shotput which emphasises the power and speed that is packed in his 1.80m and 91kg frame.

Snyman is also captaining Helpies and boasts with the extraordinary achievement of having received the man-of-the-match award in each of the Beeldtrofee finals his team has won from u14 until u16. He was also part of the SA Schools’ sevens side which won an international tournament in Windhoek earlier this year.

    James Combrinck (Affies)

Combrinck is the anchor to Affies’ scrum for 2016 and if his performances in his side’s first couple of matches is anything to go by he will be a strong contender for a place in the South African Schools’ side after the Craven Week in Johannesburg later this year.

Combrinck is also a strong ball carrier and very mobile for his 109kg frame.

    NewsGStephanvdBankStephan van der Bank (Nelspruit)

Nerves of Steel. That is one of the Nelspruit Rhinos’ flyhalf, Van der Bank, main attributes. Van der Bank has a trusty boot and have kicked his team to numerous victories since making his debut for the First XV.

Van der Bank slotted a penalty from more than 50 meters out in the quarterfinal of the Tuks Series this year against Eldoraigne to book his side a place in the semi-final of this prestigious competition. Last year he also held his nerve as he slotted the decisive penalty against EG Jansen in the semi-final of the same competition.

Van der Bank represented the Pumas at last year’s Coca-Cola Craven Week in Durban.

Abner van Reenen (Paarl Boys’ High)

Van Reenen represented the SA Schools’ A-side in 2016, but won’t be able to upgrade that jersey to a SA Schools one in 2017. Van Reenen will celebrate his 19th birthday on 30 July this year. He is an exciting player with the ball in hand and played an integral part in Garsfontein’s success in the Beeld Trophy in 2015 and 2016. Garsies won the Macro Schools competition in both these years. Van Reenen can also easily move to the midfield if needed. Van Reenen moved to Boishaai to complete his matric after signing a junior contract with Western Province.

  • Roux praises Junior Bok character against Griquas

Roux praises Junior Bok character against Griquas

Junior Springbok coach Chean Roux praised his team’s character despite going down 31-21 against the Tafel Lager Griquas in Kimberley on Wednesday evening and said the tough competition was exactly what he had hoped for before the World Rugby U20 Championship.

The match was a tough test for both teams thanks to the high tempo and physicality of play, but four converted tries by the hosts and a penalty goal by flyhalf George Whitehead to only three converted tries by the Junior Springboks handed Tafel Lager Griquas the 10-point victory.

“I am happy with the game as we got exactly what we expected from them,” said Roux.

“It was a hard and tough encounter with some big collisions, which is what we wanted. We may have lost by 10 points, but the scoreboard is not important. Our focus was on seeing if we could work in units and to see if our structures are falling into place.”

Commenting on the team’s defence and set piece play, which Roux targeted as key areas going into the match, he said: “There was definitely an improvement in the defence. We showed some great urgency and character on the tryline. They kept Griquas out for 10 to 15 phases at times. However, there is definitely hard work to be done regarding our set piece in the coming weeks.”

Whitehead opened the scoring in the seventh minute with a penalty goal, and the home team backed this up with converted tries by scrumhalf Christiaan Meyer and winger Alvin Brandt to build up an encouraging 17-0 lead.

The Junior Springboks, however, hit back strongly in the last 10 minutes of the half, as prop Gerhard Steenekamp crossed the chalk after a few phases close to the hosts’ tryline, which fullback Jean-Luc Cilliers converted.
Centre David Brits added the team’s second try three minutes later as he gathered the ball at pace and ran a good line, which allowed him to touch down. This allowed the team to reduce the gap on the scoreboard to 17-14, which the sides maintained going into the break.

Tafel Lager Griquas again struck first in the second half with Meyer scoring his second try, but this was cancelled out later by a stunning try by replacement Junior Bok scrumhalf Embrose Papier, who picked up the ball and dashed to tryline to trail the hosts 24-21.

The home team, however, managed to break away on the scoreboard in the dying minutes with flanker Wendal Wehr scoring their fourth try after a strong showing by their forwards, and despite a committed fight by the Junior Boks, Griquas managed to secure the 31-21 victory.

    Scorers:

Junior Springboks 21 (14) – Tries: Gerhard Steenekamp, David Brits, Embrose Papier. Conversions: Jean-Luc Cilliers (3). Tafel Lager Griquas 31 (17) – Tries: Christiaan Meyer (2), Alvin Brandt, Wendal Wehr. Conversions: George Whitehead (4). Penalty goal: Whitehead.
