Clifton College and Durban High School (DHS) played to a 1-1 draw at the Riverside Sports Club on Wednesday evening, with the contest finishing a couple of minutes early after a power cut dimmed the lights just as both sides were pushing hard for a winner.

DHS enjoyed the better of the opening chukka, but Clifton gradually worked their way into the contest.

“The first chukka was really good,” DHS coach Keegan Hezlett told SuperSport Schools News. “We moved the ball exceptionally well. The intensity was there, which was something that we lacked in our previous outing against Maritzburg College. That was really cool to see.

“We probably didn’t take the opportunities as we would have liked. We created two short corners. Good save from Georg [Wolhuter], a really good save.”

Clifton came more into the contest in the second chukka and forced a succession of penalty corners. One of those very nearly paid off, but DHS goalkeeper Bonga Dlomo pulled off a spectacular save, and the Horseflies instantly turned defence into attack, charging back up the field where Jesse van Wyk finished off a sizzling counterattack to give his side the lead.

“That’s their game. They’re so dangerous going forward,” Clifton coach Calvin Price said wryly. “We tried to manage that as best as we could. Credit to the boys; we ran hard. And we’re tired. We’ve played 27 games of hockey.”

The teams turned with DHS leading 1-0. Clifton had created some opportunities but failed to take them. That was, for both coaches, the area in which their teams could have been better.

Hezlett’s charges came close to scoring again in the third chukka when they caught Clifton with a swift counterattack. Goalkeeper Georg Wolhuter was drawn out of his goal, and the ball then slipped across the circle for a clean shot on goal. Kyle Human, also a top water polo player in the Clifton 1st team, pulled off a stunning stick save to deny DHS, however.

DHS coach Keegan Hezlett said Clifton’s hard-working defence led to his charge’s making some changes, which didn’t pay off: “We started playing the ball a little bit longer. We started forcing it a little bit, maybe because we hadn’t created as many outcomes as we would have liked to get.

“We started throwing more overheads, and I think that levelled out the game. With the overhead, it can become a contest once you get the ball on the ground. When we kept the ball on the ground, I think we were really good.”

Clifton’s tenacious resistance was finally rewarded when they turned a penalty corner into a goal, with captain Ryde Brisset providing the finish.

Brisset, playing his 50th match for the Clifton 1st XI, despite missing the entire 2025 season after shoulder surgery, delivered a wholehearted effort in the midfield, while his opposite number, Christoper Abrahams, was a force to be reckoned with, too, regularly challenging the Clifton backline.

Reflecting on the contest, Clifton’s coach, Calvin Price, commented: “I don’t think we’re playing our best hockey, but to draw against a side like that, I’ll take it.

“It was good. We fought well. We got stuck in, and we frustrated them, which was the plan. They’re a well-drilled unit under Keegan Hezlett. They’re a good side, with good individual players.

“The idea was to frustrate them and get the counter going again. We let ourselves down in the final third with a few opportunities. We had more short corners than they had. I wanted a bit more from the boys. But I’ll take the 1-1 draw against a quality side like that.”

“We had our chances,” DHS’s Hezlett said. “They had two saves on the line when we had gone around the goalkeeper, so credit to Clifton. They were up for it. Today, even their u16s were up for it. They drew 2-2.

“They fought hard, which was a credit to them. Then, they scored a short corner to level things at 1-1.”

Summing the contest up, he concluded: “There are small margins. If you take your chances, you can win games.

“We’ve got to be better at taking our chances. Everything else we did, I was really happy with how the guys played. We just would have liked to convert a little better, as I am sure everyone would like to.”

Jozi’s finest go head-to-head for Aitken Cup honours

The Johannesburg schoolboy hockey scene will come to a standstill this week when the annual Aitken Cup kicks off on Thursday afternoon.

The prestigious event, which brings together 16 of Jozi’s top hockey-playing schools, will be hosted at St Stithians College. It runs until Sunday, 17 May.

Catch all the action LIVE on SuperSport Schools.

The A-section of the tournament promises yet another spectacular event following last year’s showpiece, which Jeppe High School for Boys won after beating Saints 4-2 in a pulsating final at the University of the Witwatersrand.

Both outfits will be among the favourites, with St David’s Marist Inanda, Parktown Boys’ High, and St John’s College also eager to challenge for the title.

Jeppe has won the event a whopping 21 times since its inception in 1977. Their quest to defend the title begins with matches against their Pool A opposition – Monument, Northcliff, and Trinityhouse Rand Park Ridge.

There’s plenty on the line for all four sides. Monnas and Trinity occupied the last two positions last year, so they’ll be eager to improve and climb the standings, while Northcliff will want to give a good account of themselves.

Pool B will be contested by the hosts, Saints, St Benedict’s College, Noordheuwel, and Linden.

Saints are brimming with confidence heading into the clash after wins over St Alban’s College and Linden last weekend.

Home-ground advantage is a real factor in schoolboy hockey, and St Stithians, led by coach Pat Owgan, will aim to use it to their advantage.

St Benedict’s and Noordheuwel will be tricky opponents, considering how the pair have played this season, while Linden is aiming to hit its stride.

Parktown Boys’ High, who have won the Aitken title 11 times, will be in Pool C and contesting it against St David’s, Randpark High, and Redhill.

St David’s missed out on the bronze medal last year after going down 0-4 to King Edward VII (KES), while Parktown finished in seventh place. KES is absent from the event this time, though. They’re heading to KwaZulu-Natal for their traditional derby against Westville Boys’ High, and they’ll also take on Northwood, bringing together two of the season’s most impressive teams.

Pool D features St John’s College, Helpmekaar Kollege, Beaulieu, and HeronBridge.

At first glance, St John’s and Helpmekaar would be favoured, but Beaulieu and HeronBridge will be eager to make their mark as they’re playing in the A-section for the first time.

The action begins on Thursday at the Saints Blue AstroTurf when Trinity locks horns with Northcliff while Jeppe takes on Monument.

Matches will also be played at St David’s Marist Inanda and St John’s College.

    GROUPS

Pool A: Jeppe, Monument, Trinityhouse Randpark Ridge, Northcliff.
Pool B: St Stithians College, St Benedict’s College, Noordheuwel, Linden.
Pool C: St David’s Marist Inanda, Parktown Boys’ High, Randpark High, Redhill.
Pool D: St John’s College, Helpmekaar Kollege, Beaulieu, HeronBridge.

Glenwood soars in Coastal A-League, excitement mounts for Inland derby

The stars are shining brightly for the 2023 and 2024 Mancosa KwaZulu-Natal High Schools Football Association (KZNHSFA) Coastal A-League champions, Glenwood High.

After failing to qualify for the final in 2025, the Green Machine is top of the table with two games remaining in the regular season. They’ve won four, drawn one, and have 13 points from five matches.

Following a 2-2 draw against Port Shepstone High last week, Glenwood returned to winning form with a bang on Tuesday, securing a 7-2 victory over Bechet.

Aphelele Magwaza scored two goals, while Mbuso Gumede, Ukwazi Dludla, Sonwabile Ncanywa, and Iviwe Mkhulise also netted. With his goal, Dludlu maintained his impressive run of scoring in every league game this season.

Last season, Hillcrest High finished as the runner-up of the 2025 Coastal A-League, losing to Westville Boys’ High in the final. After an outstanding season, they have struggled this year, winning only one of their five matches and losing the other four.

They currently occupy seventh place with three points, just above Bechet, who are in last place. Bechet has the same number of points and the same record, but Hillcrest holds a slight edge on goal difference. With two matches to go, both have plenty to play for.

Northwood, who narrowly avoided relegation on the final day of last season, has made huge improvements this campaign, and they occupy second place after defeating Hillcrest High 2-0, thanks to goals from Benjamin van Huyssteen and Dimphotsenhle Motloung.

The Knights‘ 2025 campaign featured highs and lows. They started the season poorly, narrowly escaping being relegated from the Coastal A-League. Once they found their way, though, they were a force to be reckoned with, and they concluded the year by winning the Cowie Cup against Carter High, the runner-up of the KZN Inland A-League.

Pinetown Boys’ High, after starting the season poorly and remaining close to the relegation zone, has ascended to fifth following a 1-0 victory over Port Shepstone High. However, they remain in a precarious position, with four points from five matches, which includes one win, one draw, and three losses.

The defending champion, Westville Boys’ High, is in third place after a 2-1 win over Durban High School (DHS) on Tuesday.

Carter leads the KZN Inland A-League

On Wednesday, Carter High will have a chance to increase its lead in the Inland A-League when they tackle Maritzburg College in a big Pietermaritzburg rivalry match.

They’ve been the Inland A-League pace-setters in recent seasons. The Red, Black, and White clinched the title in 2023 after defeating Linpark in the final. That same year, Maritzburg College claimed a treble, with that squad being touted as the finest football team in the 160-year history of Maritzburg College.

In 2024, though, led by Ntuthuko Mnguni, Carter High was crowned the champion, beating College in the title game. Last season, College avenged that defeat, beating Carter High 2-0 in the final.

On Wednesday afternoon, they meet at College’s Barns Field. There is seldom much between the sides, and their clashes are entertaining back-and-forth affairs.

Maritzburg College heads into the showdown off a goalless draw against Haythorne Secondary, while Carter High secured a 2-0 victory over ML Sultan last week at Barns Field.

Carter High holds a two-point lead over College in the standings, with 10, while the home side has eight points and is in third place. They’re split by Ixopo High, who have nine points.

Should College win, they would move above Carter. Ixopo could also go top. They would need Maritzburg College to beat Carter, and they would have to win against Linpark.

A win for Carter High would further solidify their position at the summit of the standings.

In other matches on Wednesday, Haythorne faces Edendale Tech, while ML Sultan takes on Alexandra High.

  • Player Profile – Luc Boyall (Northwood)

Player Profile – Luc Boyall (Northwood)

Luc Boyall is one of the best technicians in schoolboy hockey. Photo: Supplied.

The reverse stick shot is one of the most difficult hockey strokes to execute. It requires both technical proficiency and timing. That said, Luc Boyall made it look easy when he executed it in a big match on 29 March this year.

Against a lesser team, Northwood might have been tempted to hold onto possession as much as possible while patiently looking for openings in the opposition’s defence. However, South African College Schools (SACS) is a different proposition. A one-goal lead is only safe once the final whistle has blown. So, Northwood, who were leading 3-2, attacked as if they were trailing.

The Knights burst into the SACS final third with just under three minutes remaining in the contest. Boyall had positioned himself in the circle, where he received a pass, and in one fluid motion, he slapped a reverse stick shot into the back of the goalbox to extend Northwood’s lead to 4-2. It was as if he had been executing the stroke all his life.

Boyall started playing hockey, or a version of it, with his older brother, Tristan, in their home from the moment he could walk. His first exposure to organised hockey was through the Riverside Hockey Club‘s mini-hockey programme.

He took the lessons he learned there back home and perfected them in contests with Tristan. A short while later, the duo became a trio with the birth of Charly-Rose.

“I think us messing around in the garden from a young age really helped all three of us improve our control and skills,” Luc said.

The results are there for everyone to see. Tristan represented KZN Coastal u18A at the SASHOC National Week in 2022 and 2023. He also made the SA Schools u17 side. Charly-Rose has been an invaluable member of the Our Lady of Fatima Dominican Convent first team and the KZN Coastal age group teams for the past two years.

Luc Boyall embraces the responsibility that comes with being one of the senior players in the team. Photo: Supplied.

Last year, she took home the Most Valuable Striker award at the u16 Inter-Provincial Tournament (IPT). Luc, who scored 12 goals in the u16 boys’ section, collected the boys’ Most Valuable Striker award. The siblings were selected for the SA u16A boys’ and girls’ teams.

“That was a highlight for me,” Luc said. “I also made the u16A KZN Indoor side and captained them to win the first-ever IPT. I was also selected for the SA u16 Indoor team.”

Boyall, who made his debut for Northwood as a Grade 10 student, has 46 caps under his belt. He enjoyed a stellar season in his first year with the team and is enjoying an even better one as a Grade 11 learner. This year, he has found the back of the net 26 times in 20 outings.

“He is a special young talent. He made the first team in Grade 10 last year and did really well. Now he has taken the maturity from the experience he has earned and taken it upon himself to guide other players and teach them accountability and responsibility,” Justin Collins, the Northwood coach, told SuperSport Schools News.

Boyall is a player blessed with a big-match temperament, Collins said. He loves a big challenge, and big moments unlock the best in him. The coach went on to describe the forward as a really good teammate who always does what is in the best interests of the team.

“He doesn’t give up. He runs hard and stays focused. Most importantly, when the moment comes for him to step up and score, he does exactly what the moment requires.” Collins added.

Boyall’s hat-trick against Michaelhouse at the Michaelhouse Hockey Tournament helped the Knights craft a sensational title-winning run last month. While that haul is one of his favourite performances, it pales in comparison with his hat-trick against SACS.

“My best performance for Northwood was against SACS at the Founders Festival, and my best goal has to be the last goal of my hat-trick because it helped seal the game for us,” Boyall explained.

While he has lofty hockey ambitions, the Northwood learner has his feet firmly on the ground and is taking things a game at a time, focusing on helping the Knights to the best of his abilities.

He’ll also run out for KZN Coastal u18A at the SASHOC National u18 IPT at Hilton College, from Sunday, 28 June, to Saturday, 4 July.

Sharks Craven Week selections evenly spread, Academy Week side loaded

Parity. It’s a word that describes one of the most unpredictable rugby seasons in years.

Among top-tier teams in South Africa, only Hilton College remains undefeated. There are, of course, other sides that many would rate as being better than Hilton, but none of those teams is unbeaten. At their best, Brad Macleod-Henderson‘s charges are a very tough outfit. Remember, they beat Nudgee College a couple of days after the Australians beat Grey College.

Hilton, then, has staked a claim to being KwaZulu-Natal’s best in 2026, but that status is far from clear-cut. Had the ball bounced differently late in their recent derby clash with Michaelhouse, their record might no longer be clean. It bounced favourably, though, and Hilton turned over possession before laying siege to the ‘House try line and then winning a penalty, which Nico Davel landed to win the game for his side.

Some would say Northwood, despite four losses, has a case for being number one. They went down to Michaelhouse early in the season and lost to Westville Boys’ High, too, but they avenged that defeat by beating the Griffins at the Sharks Schools Rugby Day. Their only other defeats were by two points to Paarl Boys’ High and by five to Garsfontein. They’re playing very good rugby.

Maritzburg College, too, is firing on all cylinders, and they downed Durban High School (DHS) on the weekend. Their clash with the Knights on Saturday in Durban should be a humdinger. Michaelhouse has lost three, including their last two, but their record includes a win over Affies in Pretoria.

Kearsney College has some of the most exciting attacking players to be found anywhere, and they edged out Michaelhouse on the weekend. Westville Boys’ High has endured an inconsistent season, but it’s not difficult to see the quality in their side.

Durban High School (DHS), beaten four times, remains a formidable opponent. They lost by three points to Northwood, by one to Maritzburg College, and also fell to Monument and Paarl Gimnasium, undoubtedly two of the better teams in the country this season.

Their coaches, Peter Engledow and Ronnie Uys, have been rewarded for their consistent excellence by being handed the reins to the FNB Craven Week team. They’ll be assisted by Kwanele Ngema (Kearsney), Flash Malinga (Maritzburg College), and Derek Heiberg (DHS). Westville’s Sebenza Mapumulo handles strength and conditioning, and Kearsney’s Divesh Sookdeo is the Manager.

So, getting back to that word, “parity”, their squad features five players from DHS, four each from Northwood and Kearsney, three from both Michaelhouse and Maritzburg College, and two from both Hilton and Westville. That speaks volumes about the spread of talent in the province.

Lwandile Mlaba (lock) and Nathan Aneke (centre) were included in the SA Schools team in 2025. Jamie Wimble and Zander Muller, both no. 8s, were part of the Craven Week team, too.

The Academy Week u17 squad features six players from DHS, four from Northwood, three from Hilton and Michaelhouse, two from Glenwood, Kearsney, and Westville, and one from Maritzburg College.

Fifteen of those players helped the Sharks win the u16 Grant Khomo Week in 2025. Another two, Daniel Miskey and Clement Makalele, have been included in the Craven Week line-up.

Kevin Elder (Maritzburg College) is the Head coach, and will be assisted by Lyle Matthysen (DHS) and Burger Nel (Hilton College). Agreement Sikhosana, from Port Shepstone High, is the Manager.

    The teams:

Craven Week: 15 Lux Sonkononkono (Westville Boys’ High), 14 Amo Mataboge (Durban High School), 13 Nathan Aneke (Durban High School), 12 Alex Jankowitz (Michaelhouse), 11 Anesu Kuzonyei (Northwood), 10 Daniel Miskey (Kearsney College), 9 Johannes (Ludi) van der Walt (Northwood), 8 Jamie Wimble (Northwood), 7 Zion Smith (Durban High School), 6 Zander Muller (Hilton College), 5 Andrew Schnell (Hilton College), 4 Wandile Mlaba (Westville Boys’ High), 3 Nicolas Salamousas (Michaelhouse), 2 Theo Boshoff (Maritzburg College), 1 Aphelele Chamane (Michaelhouse).

    Northwood vs Westville Boys’ High

It’s difficult to pick out standout players on the Northwood side after their 19-14 victory over Westville Boys’ High on Saturday at the Sharks Schools Rugby Day at Hilton College. That’s not a slight. It’s a compliment, acknowledging an outstandingly industrious and committed team performance.

Westville is blessed with speed and some seriously shifty backline customers, but, despite the Griffins working the boundaries, the Knights allowed them little forward momentum until late in the contest.

Northwood’s defensive work was wonderful. They hustled, gang-tackled, and stymied a team that is extremely dangerous when given good quality ball.

Still, coach Jacques Deen, a satisfied man after his charges’ win, felt they had a bit more in them: “I think the boys took it a little bit too easy today. We should have applied a little bit more pressure.”

Nonetheless, they kept a dangerous counterattacking outfit quiet for most of the contest. Everything starts with playing good defence, Deen told SuperSport Schools News: “Naseeb [Abrahams] runs our defensive systems, and we try to get into the boys’ heads what they’re playing for.

“Defence comes first, and from that comes attack. It’s a straight transition.”

Assessing the game, Deen said: “We played well. We had more moments [than they did]. I think we had nine entries into the 22, and we scored only twice. We had more opportunities.

“The scoreboard could have been different, but we are happy with the 19-14 win, to be honest.

“It’s nice coming back from losing the first one to them, and then showing we’re capable of pulling it off.”

In a tight contest, it took until the 20th minute for Northwood to open the scoring, with Janco Visagie powering over to finish off a flowing attack from the Knights. Sondelani Sheleni knocked over the conversion.

After conceding, Westville dominated possession, with Northwood stubbornly resisting the Griffins’ probing. Eventually, though, that pressure told and left-wing Lisa Sijadu was put clear to score in the left corner. Jade-Will Koopman coolly slotted the touchline conversion to level the scores.

    The teams turned at 7-7.

About 10 minutes into the second stanza, a purple patch broke open a tight contest. A good, hard, and direct line from Tristan Parkinson pierced the Westville defensive line, and Sheleni turned it into a seven-point play with an assured conversion kick.

From the kickoff, the Knights launched a searing attack, sending the ball from left to right, out to wing Anesu Kuzonyei, where the big speedster brushed off two tackles before bursting clear to round off an attack that had begun almost 70 metres down the field.

Westville kept fighting, and they at last began to make some inroads, especially through right wing Avumile Lisa, who challenged Northwood on the right with his fast feet. He was the catalyst for the try of the day.

After receiving the ball just outside Westville’s 22, he cut inside and left six players clutching at air before linking up with and feeding left-wing Lisa Sijadu, who crossed for his second five-pointer. Koopman added the extras with just over 10 minutes to play.

With time winding down, Westville put Northwood under severe pressure, spending significant time in the Knights’ 22. Their defence, so uncompromising throughout the match, bent but did not break, and they came away with a 19-14 victory.

“From beating DHS, and then going to Wildeklawer and doing well, losing by five points to Garsfontein and two points to Paarl Boys’ High, our confidence is there,” coach Deen said.

“We have the belief, and now, in the last three or four games, we’ve shown where we’re supposed to be. We have the belief. It’s just about execution now.”

Next Saturday, on their Old Boys’ Day, the Knights will face a stern examination from a team that also won after a tough battle, Maritzburg College. It should be fantastic fare for rugby lovers.

    Hilton College vs Glenwood High

Hilton College, meanwhile, cruised to a comfortable 42-7 win over Glenwood High in the following game.

The Green Machine shot out of the gates with intent, but Hilton calmly withstood the early pressure before taking charge and pulling away to win their eighth game on the trot without defeat.

“It was difficult to get the guys up after the highs of last week [a derby victory over Michaelhouse],” Hilton’s coach Brad Macleod-Henderson commented. “But we rolled up our sleeves and did enough to get over the line. There’s more performance left in us that we need to try and find before next week.

“They started well,” he admitted. “Their 12 and 13 punched some holes in our defence. They ran hard. They got over the gain-line.

“Maybe we were a little bit passive, but luckily we rectified that in the second half and we were able to get away to a fairly easy win.”

Macleod-Henderson said executing the basic well was the key to victory: “I thought our lineouts, scrums, and kickoffs were very good today. That laid the platform for us to play in the right areas.

Nico Davel kicked very well after kicking that last-second penalty last week. Those factors got us over the line.”

Davel again took charge at flyhalf in place of John Grubb, who exited Hilton’s win over Michaelhouse with an injury. He should be back in action next week, Macleod-Henderson said.
