Junior Boks edge Varsity Cup Dream Team

The Junior Springboks scored a morale boosting 31-24 win over a powerful Varsity Cup Dream Team on Tuesday evening at the Danie Craven Stadium in Stellenbosch.

Playing in front of an appreciative crowd and in excellent weather conditions, the Varsity Cup selection lead 12-10 at the break after a dominant forward display in the opening half.

However, the Junior Springboks got stronger as the match progressed and they were rewarded for the excellent fightback with a well-deserved victory. Dawie Theron, the Junior Springbok coach, admitted afterwards he was both relieved and encouraged by his team’s gritty performance.

“This match was exactly what we needed for our World Rugby Under-20 Championship preparations. The Varsity Cup side had several players who starred in previous years for the Junior Springboks, and they were a much more matured team,” explained Theron.

He added: “We started poorly and the Varsity boys dominated us in the first half. However, we grew in confidence especially in the second half, and the players also managed to play with more composure. The match proved that we are in need of much more work before we can be satisfied with our preparations for Italy,” cautioned Theron.

The national selectors will announce the Junior Bok squad for a two-match tour to Argentina early next week. Before that, the hopefuls will have another training workout against the Western Province Rugby Institute in Stellenbosch.

In a lively and entertaining match, a penalty try and an excellent effort by fullback Rhyno Smith gave the Dream Team a 12-10 lead at halftime. Dan du Plessis (centre) scored for the Junior Boks and Ernest Stapelberg (fly half) slotted a penalty.

Dillon Smit (scrumhalf ) and Elandre Hugget (replacement hooker) scored two more tries for the Varsity Cup Dream team, who also turned down several penalty kicks at goal.

The Junior Boks, led by number eight Hanro Liebenberg, kept the scoreboard busy through a penalty try and a well-worked five pointer by replacement hooker Jan van der Merwe. Kickers Ernst Stapelberg and Brandon Thomson added two penalties each to the tally.

The Junior Boks are currently attending a training camp at Stellenbosch in preparation for the 2015 World Rugby Under-20 Championship in June in Italy.

    Scorers:

Junior Springboks – Tries: Daniel du Plessis, Jan van der Merwe, penalty try. Conversions: Ernst Stapelberg, Brandon Thomson. Penalties: Stapelberg (2), Thomson (2). Varsity Cup Dream Team – Tries: Penalty try, Rhyno Smith, Dillon Smit, Elandré Hugget. Conversions: Innocent Radebe, Rhyno Smith.

    Wildeklawer fixtures for this weekend

NuusG EGJansenThe number one ranked team in South Africa according to School of Rugby, Paarl Boys’ High, will kick off their return to the Wildeklawer SuperSchools on the B-field on Saturday when they clash with Louis Botha from Bloemfontein. Boishaai will jog onto the field as favourites for this match. Their second match of the tournament will be against EG Jansen of Boksburg in a clash that will see two of the brightest locks on schoolboy level in South African, Ruben de Villiers (Boishaai) and Hendré Stassen (EG Jansen), go head-to-head.

The match that promises to be the most memorable is the one between Grey College and Monument which will be played on the second day. The team from Bloemfontein is the only school with an unbeaten record at Wildeklawer since its inaugural tournament in 2009. Grey only joined the line-up in 2010.

The match between Paarl Gimnasium and Affies of Pretoria also promises to produce some fireworks. Gimmies suffered their first defeat of the season at the hands of Bishops on Saturday, while Affies also slipped against SACS (13-10) earlier in the season. The match between the hosts and Oakdale Landbou of Riversdal on Saturday as the main curtain raiser for the Vodacom Cup game between Griqualand West and Western Province promises to be a more exciting match than the senior game.

Menlopark wil make their Wildeklawer debut against Noord-Kaap on the first day after the Vodacom Cup match. All the matches on Monday will be televised live by SuperSport.

School of Rugby Rankings – 20 April 2015

SOR NuusPaarl Boys’ High kept their place on top of our rankings thanks to a 23-17 victory over Outeniqua of George. The team from Paarl will go into this weekend’s Wildeklawer SuperSchools unbeaten thus far.

Our third rankings of 2015 will only come out after the second day of #Wildeklawer2015. The tournament’s results will surely bring a few movements in our rankings as most of the top teams will be in action from Saturday in Kimberley.

Paul Roos Gimnasium’s place in the rankings might suffer a bit. They will be in Japan defending South Africa’s honour at the annual Sanix Rugby Tournament. The team from Stellenbosch currently occupies the third spot on our latest rankings. They moved up from fifth spot after a convincing victory of 34-3 over Grey High School in Port Elizabeth.

Grey College recorded an easy victory of 52-0 over Fichardtpark and kept their second position. The team will be tested against Waterkloof and Monument at Wildeklawer. Nelspruit dropped to fifth after beating Kempton Park by 31-21 in the quarter-finals of the Tuks Series. Oakdale Landbou whom didn’t play and Paul Roos moved up. The only reason for this is the fact that Kempies was not a Top 20 team in our rankings last year and the Rhinos accumulated less points for this victory which saw their average points drop.

All five teams in our top five is still unbeaten in 2015.

Paarl Gimnasium, Monument, Affies and EG Jansen will surely be ranked higher in our rankings as the season progress. Gimmies could’ve ranked higher if it wasn’t for their 35-32 deafeat at the hands of Bishops on Saturday. Monnas’ defeats against Paarl Boys’ High and Paul Roos Gimnasium is their only thus far in the season.
