Hermann steals the show on Day 3 of the Cubs Week

NewsGJordanHermannJordan Hermann was the star of the third day of Cricket South Africa’s Cubs Week. The Titans’ opening batsman scored an unbeaten 168 runs in his side’s 142-run victory over Nigeria on Maties’s D-field.

His knock took him to the top of the run-scorers list for the week with 302 runs in his side’s three matches thus far. He boasts an unbelievable average of 151 runs per innings. Hermann faced 149 deliveries of which he dispatched 23 past the boundary. Two were maximums.

He could do nothing wrong on the day as he also picked up two wickets at the cost of a mere five runs in the two overs he bowled. Hermann shared a mammoth 197-run partnership over the second wicket with Khaya Nyamathe (71).

He also joined forces with Hardus Coetzer (65) over the fourth wicket for another century partnership (100).

It seems that the Knights and the Lions will meet each other in the final of the week bar any surprises. Both sides are still unbeaten and will face Nigeria and Nambia respectively who are still searching for their first victories of the tournament.

An impressive allround performance by Ruan Cronjé helped the Knights secure a four-wicket victory over the Cape Cobras. Cronjé (4/44) first helped his team to restrict the Cobras to 175 with his spin bowling.

He then also shined with the bat as he scored 62 runs. He received some valuable support from Marco de Kock (26), Corné Viljoen (24) and JP Coetzee (22).

The Lions came out on top by five wickets against the Dolphins. The Dolphins batted first and were restricted to 193 thanks to some good bowling by Zakhele Sibanda (3/18) and Michael Copeland (3/41).

Christopher de Freitas (65*) followed his century of yesterday up with an unbeaten half-century. He and Heinrigh Pieterse (57*) shared an unbeaten 122-run partnership over the sixth wicket to get their team over the line.

James Mullins (83), George van Heerden (63*) and Jaden Smith (55) all recorded half-centuries as the Warriors defeated Namibia by 140 runs. Van Heerden also got rid of two batsmen for a mere four runs, while the pick of the Warriors’ bowling attack was his Grey High School teammate Joshua Stephenson (3/22).

    Summarised Scorecards:

Warriors 280/5 (James Mullins 83, George van Heerden 63*, Jaden Smith 55, Nonelea Yikha 30; Jan van Dyk 2/48, Waylan Cloete 2/60); Namibia 140 (Matthew de Gouveia 34, JC Balt 25, Renier Bosman 21*; Joshua Stephenson 3/22, George van Heerden 2/4). Warriors won by 140 runs.

Cape Cobras 175 (Daniel Smith 54, Nathan Engelbrecht 34, Lehan Botha 27; Ruan Cronjé 4/44, Brian Thaele 3/34, Gordon Taje 2/31); Knights 176/6 (Ruan Cronjé 62, Marco de Kock 26, Corné Viljoen 24, JP Coetzee 22; Siya Plaatjie 3/35). Knights won by four wickets.

Dolphins 193 (Chad Laycock 68, Andile Simelane 41; Zakhele Sibanda 3/18, Michael Copeland 3/41, Liam McCarthy 2/27); Lions 194/5 (Christopher de Freitas 65*, Heinrigh Pieterse 57*, Taheer Isaacs 36, Extras 22; Sanele Mbatha 2/30). Lions won by five wickets.

Titans 337/4 (Jordan Hermann 168*, Khaya Nyamathe 71, Hardus Coetzer 65; Aho Peter 2/55); Nigeria 195 (Olaleye Elijah 45, Sylvester Okpe 35, Extras 28 Miracle Ikauje 23; Saahil Khan 3/34, Jordan Hermann 2/5, Thomas Mayes 2/39). Titans won by 142 runs.

  • Modimokoane and Parsons inspire SA u19s to victory over NZ

Modimokoane and Parsons inspire SA u19s to victory over NZ

NewsGBryceParsonsCaptain, Bryce Parsons’ all-encompassing performance, along with Odirile Modimokoane’s four-wicket haul, helped the South Africa under-19s to a five-wicket triumph over New Zealand in their second Youth One-Day International (ODI) Quadrangular match in Chatsworth on Sunday.

The win offers the SA U19s a possible route to the quadrangular final if they defeat Zimbabwe in the third round of matches on Tuesday, 07 January. This is after the India under-19s claimed a comfortable 89-run victory over the Southern African outfit at the Hollywoodbets Kingsmead Stadium.

Parsons produced a masterclass in economical bowling, taking figures of 1/6 in eight overs, while Modimokoane claimed a return 4/24 to help restrict the young Black Caps to 163 all out before the former smashed 63 off 67 balls from the top of the order to propel his side to a successful run-chase.

After losing the toss and being asked to bowl first, the junior Proteas bowlers established their authority early on, as their opening pair struck in their respective first overs of the day.

In a developing trend in recent matches, fast bowlers, Mondli Khumalo and Achille Cloete led the charge with the ball. The duo removed Simon Keene (0) and Rhys Mariu (1) to leave the visitors reeling on 1/2 before Ollie White (17) and Fergus Lellman (24) stabilized the innings for New Zealand.

It was not too long though before the pressure of dot balls from Parsons and Tiaan van Vuuren (0/24) began to tell, as two run-outs and a wicket from the former claimed the scalps of White, Jesse Tashkoff (1) and Lellman to keep the momentum with the home side.

Struggling on 54/5, Beckham Wheeler (40) and Quinn Sunde (35) battled hard at the crease, combining for a 68-run partnership for the sixth wicket to get the islanders into three figures before Modimokoane found his rhythm, taking four quick wickets.

The left-arm spinner trapped Wheeler and Adithya Ashok (7) leg-before wicket, clean bowled Sunde before finding the edge of the last man in, William O’Rourke for a duck. The final wicket was preceded by another run-out, this time inflicted on Hayden Dickson (12).

In reply, South Africa couldn’t have asked for a better start. Parsons and Andrew Louw continued their form from the last match for a 93-run opening stand to take complete control of the match. While Louw played the anchoring role, Man of the Match, Parsons took the game to the New Zealand bowlers, dispatching six fours and two sixes on his way to a second consecutive Youth ODI fifty.

Despite New Zealand captain Tashkoff (2/26) taking two wickets in the 18th over, removing Parsons and Jonathan Bird (0) in quick succession, Louw was aptly supported by Tyrese Karelse (20) and Luke Beaufort (21*) as he raised his bat for a 90-ball 56 (6 fours).

Although Louw experienced his own run out near the end, with Jack Lees (2) also given out for obstructing the field, Beaufort saw the team over the line with a four on the last ball of the match to seal a commanding victory.

In the other match, an undefeated century from Divyaansh Saxena (128*), 78 from Yashasvi Jaiswal and three wickets apiece from bowlers, Shushant Mishra (3/37) and Shubhang Hegde (3/40) helped India dominate Zimbabwe to remain undefeated in the series.

In the third round of the Youth ODI Quadrangular, South Africa will host Zimbabwe at the Hollywoodbets Kingsmead Cricket Ground, while India faces New Zealand at the Chatsworth Oval.

De Freitas and Schaper shared a 226-run partnership over the third wicket. De Freitas was in devastating form hitting 15 fours and five sixes.

Nigeria who’s using the tournament in preparation for the ICC u19 World Cup would take the fact that they were not bowled out in the match. The Lions’ opening bowler Liam McCarthy grabbed four wickets for only 34 runs.

The Titans reached 303/7 in their allotted overs against the Dolphins thanks to half-centuries by Hardus Coetzer (70), Jordan Hermann (50) and Khaya Nyamathe (50). The SA Schools rugby player Jordan Hendrikse (5/52) picked up the only five-wicket haul of the second day’s matches.

  • Smith and Botha let their bats do the talking at Cubs Week

Smith and Botha let their bats do the talking at Cubs Week

NewsGJhedliBriesiesOpening batsman Daniel Smith (119) and Lehan Botha (103) put the Cape Cobras in a commanding position against Namibia with their centuries during the opening day of Cricket South Africa’s Cubs Week.

Smith and Botha shared a 142-run partnership over the second wicket to lay the foundation for their team to reach a massive 353/5 in their allotted 50 overs. Smith also recorded the first century during last year’s Khaya Majola Week in Balgowan.

Smith faced 118 deliveries in his innings striking 16 fours. Botha found the boundary 11 times. This included a maximum. Nathan Jacobs (4/28) was the pick of the Cobras bowling attack.

The Dolphins’ Andile Simelane wrapped up Nigeria’s tail with a hat-trick to claim an 80-run victory. Simelane got rid of Jimoh Rahman (1), Audu Isiaka (0) and Abolariu Rasheed (0) to bring the visitors’ innings to an end.

He rearranged Rahman and Rasheed’s wickets while trapping Isiaka leg before. The Dolphins reached 228/8 in their innings thanks to contributions by Chad Laycock (49), Francis Moran (46) and Slade van Staden (36).

The Lions showed with an 18-run victory over the Titans that they will be serious title contenders. Sebastian de Oliveira produced an all-around performance to get his team over the line.

Oliveira (56*) hit an unbeaten half-century with Nick Halstead-Cleak (61), Cameron Rowe (48) and Heinrigh Pieterse (38) also chipping in to help the Lions reach 218/8 in their allotted overs.

Oliveira (5/54) then produced the best bowling figures of the day to help bundle the Titans out short of the target. Three of the Titans’ batsmen Jordan Hermann (84), Hanu Viljoen (55) and Simeon de Bruyn (50*) scored half-centuries.

The Knights recorded a convincing 83-run victory over the Warriors. It seemed that it would be a much closer contest after the Knights was bowled out for 218 runs. Marco de Kock (56) and Orapeleng Mtloaring (51) scoring fifties.

Garg hundred topples SA U19s in first Youth ODI Quadrangular clash

NewsGJackLeesA match-winning century from Priyam Garg was the difference as the South Africa under-19s went down by 66 runs against the India under-19s in their first Youth One-Day International (ODI) Quadrangular encounter in Chatsworth on Friday.

The win gives India an early lead on the four-team log standings thanks to a superior net run rate over the New Zealand under-19s who clinched a thrilling two-run victory over Zimbabwe at the Hollywoodbets Kingsmead Stadium.

Indian captain Garg smashed a quicker-than-a-run-a-ball 110 off 103 balls to help propel the subcontinent side to a menacing 264/5 in their 50 overs, before leading his team in restricting South Africa to 198/9 despite a valiant half-century from opposing captain, Bryce Parsons.

After winning the toss and electing to bowl first, South Africa had their counterparts under pressure after dismissing their openers, Divyaansh Saxena (7) and Yashasvi Jaiswal (13), cheaply, with Mondli Khumalo picking up both scalps.

Reeling at 29/2, Garg and Tilak Varma combined for a 91-run stand for the third wicket to stabilize the visitor’s innings, with the latter contributing a valuable 42 as he allowed his skipper to play a free-flowing knock before a vital breakthrough was initiated by Khumalo.

Although he lost his partner, Garg found another willing teammate in Dhruv Jurel. The pair put on another 104 runs for the fourth wicket, with Garg dispatching the majority of his nine fours and two sixes as they dominated the South African bowlers during the middle period.

Jurel recorded 65 off 74 balls (2 fours, 2 sixes) to help India take the advantage in the tie at the Chatsworth Oval.

Khumalo ended the innings with his career Youth ODI best of 4/53.

In reply, the home side got off to a positive start before going onto lose the first wicket in the 13th over, Levert Manje bowled for 13. The fellow opener, Andrew Louw then aptly teamed up with Jonathan Bird (22) for a 43-run partnership to take the SA U19s to 83/1 before Louw fell five runs short of his half-century on 45 off 85 balls.

That wicket gave India the impetus with the ball, taking the next three wickets for 45 runs, including Bird, Luke Beaufort (7) and Khanya Cotani (13). Those inroads made by Shushant Mishra (4/48) and Kartik Tyagi (1/25) brought Parsons to the crease, with the left-hander faced with the task of rescuing his team from 128/5, chasing 265 for victory.

Leading from the front in a true captain’s knock, Parsons scored a 50-ball 57, including eight fours and one six. In the end, it was not enough, as his fellow middle-order batsmen were outplayed by spinners, Ravi Bishnoi (2/29) and Tilak Varma (1/23).

The two turners removed Jack Lees (1), Pheko Moletsane (1) and Merrick Brett (0) before Mishra took the last wicket of South Africa’s innings, the danger man, Parsons, to leave the hosts nine down with 7.2 overs remaining and still needing 97 runs.

Achille Cloete (11*) and Khumalo (10*) showed determination at the crease to prevent their side being bowled out but that just delayed the inevitable as India made their first mark in the Quadrangular.

In the other match, Nicholas Lidstone (56) and bowlers, David Hancock (3/32) and Jesse Tashkoff (3/45) inspired New Zealand to a narrow triumph over Zimbabwe after the Southern African outfit collapsed from 198/6 to 202 all out in pursuit of 205 for victory.

The second round of matches in the Youth ODI Quadrangular series takes place on Sunday, 05 January from 09h30 (SA time). The SA U19s will host New Zealand at the Chatsworth Oval, while India faces off against Zimbabwe at Hollywoodbets Kingsmead.
