Die Afrikaanse Hoër Seunskool van Pretoria en die Hoërskool Stellenberg sal mekaar vir die eerste keer Vrydag in die geskiedenis van die twee skole op eerstespanvlak die stryd aan sê.

Die twee spanne kom in die hoofwedstryd van die eerste dag van die Barloworld Toyota Menlyn Noord/Suid-toernooi teen mekaar te staan. 

Vanjaar se toernooi word deur die Hoërskool Garsfontein op Bere-park aangebied. Dit is die sesde jaar wat die toernooi gehou word. 

Affies sal lugtig vir sy eerste ontmoeting met Stellies wees. Dit sal slegs die Wit Bulle se tweede amptelike kragmeting van die seisoen wees. Hulle het verlede week vir Diamantveld met 52-25 kaf gedraf. 

Affies was wel ook teen HTS Middelburg (30-5) tydens die jaarlikse Afgri Prestige Rugbydag in aksie. Daar word egter geen stelskoppe tydens die dag se verkorte wedstryde toegelaat nie. 

Stellenberg het Saterdag die eerste keer in sy geskiedenis geslaag om Oakdale Landbou se Bulle te tem. Stellies was met 21-10 baas. Hulle het ook al vanjaar vir HTS Drostdy met 13-7 omgedop. 

Affies kon sedert sy onoorwonne seisoen van 2013 slegs twee keer in 12 wedstryde daarin slaag om oorwinnings oor skole vanuit die Wes-Kaap te behaal. Dit sluit kragmetings teen die twee Suid-Kaapse skole, Hoërskool Outeniqua en Oakdale Landbou, uit. 

Die twee seges die afgelope vyf jaar was teen Boland Landbou (38-14 in 2018) en Paul Roos Gimnasium (24-17 in 2016). Affies behoort met die twee losvoorspelers George Oosthuizen en Adolf Visser genoeg balbesit op die voorvoet te kry. Stellenberg sal ook die heelagter, Dieter Crafford, fyn moet dophou. 

Stellenberg se binnesenter, Hedley Hadlow, se spelpeil tot dusver is een van sy span se sterkpunte in sy twee seges gewees.

In die enigste ander eerstespan-wedstryd op die eerste dag van die toernooi sal EG Jansen van Boksburg probeer om sy vertoning verlede jaar teen die Hoërskool Durbanville te herhaal. Jansies was verlede jaar met 43-28 vir Durbies geklop.

Meeste van die land se voorste o.16-spanne sal van more af by Paarl Gimnasium se jaarlikse o.16-toernooi in aksie wees. Die toernooi word jaarliks sedert 1992 aangebied. 

Die gasheer sal Saterdag in die hoofwedstryd van die openingsdag teen Grey-kollege van Bloemfontein te staan kom. Gimmies se ander twee wedstryde gedurende die week sal teen HTS Middelburg en Waterkloof wees. 

Die Hoër Jongenskool Paarl sal in die hoofwedstryd van die tweede dag teen Waterkloof van Pretoria sake uitspook. Boishaai se ander twee wedstryde is teen Menlopark en EG Jansen van Boksburg. 

Grey-kollege kom op die tweede dag teen Kempton Park te staan, terwyl hy teen Outeniqua van George op die laaste dag sal speel.

Paarl Gimnasium and Maritzburg College will get the most exposure in 2019 through the Premier Interschools program. Both schools have three of their matches on the newly released schedule. 

Premier Interschools recently announced that they have a new title sponsor in Supa Quick. All of the matches that form part of this series will be broadcasted by SuperSport. 

As always the biggest match will be the biggest interschools in the world between Paarl Boys’ High and Paarl Gimnasium. Gimmies’ clashes against Affies of Pretoria and Paul Roos Gimnasium will like last year also form part of the Premier Interschools for 2019. 

The first Premier Interschools match of 2019 will be between Glenwood High School and Maritzburg College. These two teams first met back in 1921. The team from Pietermaritzburg’s matches against Affies and King Edward VII is also part of the program.

Some early skirmishes have taken place, but the Eastern Cape schools programme is set to explode into action when the annual Pam Golding Properties Graeme Rugby Day takes place in Grahamstown on Saturday (March 16).

The Graeme organisers have again lined up a feast of entertaining matches for this popular tournament, with the top schools from the region all getting another chance to fine-tune their squads for the forthcoming season. 

In addition, rugby enthusiasts can look forward to a taste of Western Cape rugby as SACS are attending it for the first time. The Cape Town school will take on leading Grahamstown outfit St Andrew’s in the 13.50 game on the Somerset field.

SACS coach Nick Maurer said they were delighted to receive the invitation to a festival of rugby they had heard much about.

“We know we face a big challenge against St Andrew’s, but we are looking to put in a committed performance which will hopefully bond us as a team going forward,” he said.

“We want to expose as many of our players to the intensity and pressure of first team rugby which will stand them in good stead for the rest of the season.”

Should he be in attendance, as is likely, it will be something of a homecoming for SACS headmaster Brendan Grant, who spent several years as deputy headmaster at Graeme. His knowledge of Eastern Cape rugby should help to prepare the Cape Town side for the examination ahead.

A youthful Graeme team, who received a sobering lesson against Framesby last week, will have a chance to show what they have learnt when they face Dale in the day’s feature match at 16.10.

Coach Jonty van der Meulen has only two players back from last year’s squad, so the team is on a massive learning curve.

Despite including several players in the squad from the talented U16 group of 2018, it will take a while for them to adapt to the higher pace and skill levels of first team rugby. 

They will be thoroughly examined by a school which seldom field a poor side and are fresh off a 56-24 trouncing of Stirling in the Border Rugby Day last weekend. 

As usual, there are a number of cross-border fixtures on the programme, pitting EP schools against their Border counterparts.

Queen’s College may face a tough encounter with Framesby, while East London’s Hudson Park will be equally well tested by Grey High.

Another fascinating game will be the 12.40 clash where the small, but always competitive, Marlow Agricultural pit their skills against East London powerhouse Selborne. 

The main curtain-raiser (15.00) should be a real humdinger when a promising Kingswood side attempt to lay down an early-season marker against Port Elizabeth rivals Pearson.

These clashes epitomise the intense rivalries that provide riveting spectator sport and have provided some of the most renowned Springboks.

For example, if a derby takes place in Paarl, then a community school in that area will be adopted. A complement of rugby coaches and sports presenters, joined by members of the Blitzbokke, will descend on the school to kick off the programme, which lasts for a year. At each monthly event, children will receive coaching and play tag rugby. The aim is to create a deeper pool of rugby talent and to empower youth from disadvantaged communities.

There are some exciting match-ups to look forward to during this year’s edition of the Twizza Glenwood Rugby Festival. The festival will take place at Glenwood High School in Durban from 19 to 23 March.

On the opening day of the festival, the match between Westville Boys’ High of Durban and Montana of Pretoria promises to be the clash of the day. Wesvalia of Klerksdorp will face the third touring team of Grey College. 

This match’s result will be closely followed by the new deputy headmaster of Wesvalia, Lourens van der Merwe. The international referee was a teacher at Grey College before moving to Klerksdorp. 

Louis Botha of Bloemfontein’s clash with Centurion on the opening day also promises to provide some exciting schoolboy rugby. The team from Bloemfontein also have another tough physical match-up on the second day against Montana. 

Pionier of Vryheid will face Merensky and Goudveld in their first two matches in Durban. Both these matches will provide a good test for the side from Vryheid before the knock-out stages of the NWU Pukke 16 Series.  

Goudveld will face Ben Viljoen of Groblersdal in the match not too miss on the final day. Gouties already defeated Diamantveld (21-12) and Vereeniging Gimnasium (43-5) in 2019. This will also provide Ben Viljoen’s new head of rugby, Sylvester Booysen, a good idea on how much work is left before the Virsekerbeker kicks-off.

SACS, one of the oldest schools in South Africa, are gearing themselves up for an exciting trip to the Eastern Cape when they compete in the Pam Golding Properties Graeme Rugby Day in Grahamstown for the first time on Saturday (March 16).

Officially called South African College Schools, but far better known as SACS, the Cape Town outfit will take on local team St Andrew’s College in the day’s third last game and it should be a thriller between two schools with long and proud traditions in the sport.

Founded in 1829, SACS have produced numerous international stars, perhaps the most famous being Springbok fullback and 2007 World Cup winner Percy Montgomery and Proteas batsman Peter Kirsten.

The class of 2019, however, will have their sights firmly fixed on the challenge posed by the Grahamstown outfit, whose emphasis on running rugby should capture the visitors’ attention from the outset.

SACS coach Nick Maurer was in no doubt about the test which awaited them.

“St Andrew’s are a highly respected rugby school, renowned for their fight, fitness and skill levels,” he said. “We are expecting a very tough battle.”

He added that touring was a big priority for SACS players and they were looking forward to making their debut in fresh surroundings.

“We have heard great things about the Graeme Rugby Day and we are excited to have been invited. We are also looking forward to enjoying the legendary Eastern Cape hospitality!”

The team will have the benefit of their headmaster’s knowledge of rugby in the region, with former Queen’s College principal Brendan Grant having coached the Grey High first team, as well as being deputy headmaster at Graeme for several years.

Maurer said they would be bringing a relatively inexperienced squad to Grahamstown.

“We have a few players who have some with first team experience from last year, but none who played more than 66% of the games,” he said.

“So we are quite an inexperienced squad, but we have many Grade 12s who are keen to prove a point and also some exciting youngsters coming in from last year’s U16 division.”

He said their preparations were on track and they were as ready as they could be for the 2019 season.

“We have just concluded another comprehensive pre-season,” said Maurer, “and are content that we could not have done more to prepare the boys for the 2019 campaign.”

Die Afrikaanse Hoër Seunskool van Pretoria sal in die hoofwedstryd op die laaste dag van sy 15de jaarlikse Francois Swart Rugbyweek vir o.15-spanne teen die Hoërskool Garsfontein te staan kom. Die week vind van 20 tot 23 Maart in die Jakarandastad plaas. 

Dit sal die eerste keer in ‘n hele paar jaar wees dat spanne van die twee skole mekaar op ‘n rugbyveld die stryd aansê. Affies sal op die eerste teen Kempton Park sake uitspook, terwyl hulle op die tweede dag vir EG Jansen van Boksburg sal pak. 

Garsfontein is een van vier nuwe gesigte op vanjaar se week. Die ander drie skole is Lichtenburg, Westville Boys’ High en die Hoërskool Klerksdorp.

Die vier skole wat nie weer vanjaar in aksie is nie, is King Edward VII, Jeppe High School for Boys’, Ligbron Akademie en Eldoraigne. 

Die rugbyweek is in 2004 gestig na die afsterwe van die belowende jong losskakel, Francois Swart, wat daardie jaar sy lewe in ‘n motorongeluk buite Victoria-Wes in die Noord-Kaap verloor het.

Swart het Affies se eerstespan in 53 wedstryde verteenwoordig en het 447 punte vir die Wit Bulle in die wedstryde aangeteken. Swart se skakelmaat in 51 van sy 53 wedstryde vir Affies was die Springbok-skrumskakel, Fourie du Preez.

Swart het na skool in 2002 en 2003 vir die Suid-Afrikaanse o.12-span gespeel. Hy het
ook tussen 2001 en 2003 die Luiperds, Westelike Provinsie en die Blou Bulle in die Vodacombeker-reeks verteenwoordig.

Another exciting line-up of teams from around the country will make for a memorable two days of schoolboy rugby when the annual Standard Bank Grey High Rugby Festival takes place on March 21 and 23.

A total of 25 first teams from as far afield as Johannesburg, Pretoria and Durban will take part in the two-day sporting extravaganza and a total of 80 matches will be played on seven fields during the festival.

Besides the Grey fields – Phillip, Pyott, Gordon and Pollock – games will also be played at the Old Grey, Crusaders and Police fields. The festival also features matches in the age-group divisions, from U14 to U16.

The festival includes top Eastern Cape schools, with St Andrew’s, Selborne, Brandwag and Framesby all in the mix. Brandwag, however, will only be in action on the second day when they take on St Benedict’s on the Pollock Oval.

The host school have lined themselves up for two interesting fixtures against Durban opponents. They will open their programme against Northwood, the school that produced Proteas cricket allrounder Shaun Pollock, and then take on Durban High School in the festival’s final fixture.

The second game will be a repeat of the closing match of the 2016 programme when Grey defeated DHS 16-7 in a fiercely contested encounter. 

The Durban side had a lean patch a few years ago but they have emerged as one of the prominent KwaZulu-Natal rugby schools recently and it should make for another entertaining climax to the festival. 

As the hosts, Grey will have a target on their backs and they know they will have to be at their best to get the better of their Durban rivals.

DHS is in for a testing festival because they face highly rated PE school Framesby on the opening day, while Northwood will also have their credentials examined in their second game against Selborne, of East London.

Another highlight of the opening day should be the clash between Selborne and Jeppe, two schools with strong rugby traditions. They are perennially among the top sides in their respective regions and their clash as day one’s main curtain-raiser should be a cracking affair.

There will be not much respite for the Jeppe lads because they take on another top Eastern Cape school in St Andrew’s on the opening day.

Die span wat vanjaar as kampioen van die Wesgrow-reeks gekroon wil word, sal eers vir Voortrekker van Bethlehem moet omdop. 

Die Trekkers het Saterdag ‘n duidelik waarskuwing aan die ander spanne in die reeks gestuur deur Jim Fouché van Bloemfontein met 58-24 om te dop. Die wenspan het teen rustyd op sy tuisveld ‘n voorsprong van 27-14 opgebou. JF het nie vir die eerste 20 minute van die wedstryd opgedaag nie en kon nooit daarna slaag om op te vang nie. 

Die Trekkers het vroeg ‘n voorsprong van 24-0 opgebou. Die skrif was toe feitlik teen die muur vir JF se kanse om ‘n sege in Bethlehem te behaal. Goudveld van Welkom het reeds verlede week die appelkar geskud deur die verdedigende kampioen, Diamantveld, met 21-12 uit te oorlê. 

Twee van die tuisspan se spelers Bjorn Steinhobel (haker) en Xavier Adams (vleuel) het elk drie keer ‘n draai agter JF se doellyn gaan maak. Die Trekkers het tien drieë in die sege gedruk, maar kon slegs vier hiervan verdoel. 

Die Hoërskool Fichardtpark het tydens Goudveld-Hoërskool se jaarlikse sportdag ‘n geskiedkundige sege oor die Hoërskool Noord-Kaap behaal. Fichies het met sy oorwinning van 15-10 vir die eerste keer ooit daarin geslaag om Northerns op die rugbyveld om te dop. 

Die wedstryd is ook deel van die Wesgrow-reeks se ligabepalings gewees. Northerns het ‘n voorsprong van 10-0 opgebou en Fichies se afrigters, Dirkie Groenewald en Apiwe Dinga, sou verskoon indien hulle bekommerd op hierdie stadium van die wedstryd geraak het. 

Die span van Bloemfontein het egter hope durf getoon en teruggeveg om uiteindelik as oorwinnaars van die veld te stap. Dit was veral Fichies se verdediging wat aan die span die geskiedkundige sege besorg het. Veral agterlangs moes die wenspan bontstaan om Northerns se haastige agterspelers hok te slaan. 

Vir Fichies het sy senterpaar, Reno Kok en Reagan Maartens, asook die vleuel Christiaan Jonker blink vertonings gelewer. Voorlangs het die vaskopstut, Janco van Zyl, op sy goeie vertoning van die vorige week teen Rooiskool voortgebou. 

Voorlangs het die kaptein en flank, Nicolas du Buisson, goed vertoon. Hy is later na haker geskuif, Die vleuel Pieter Barnard wat weens ‘n ligte verkoue teen die Afrikaanse Hoërskool Kroonstad gerus is, het warm gelyk voordat hy die veld weens harsingskudding moes verlaat. 

Fichies kom volgende week teen Hentie Cilliers op sy tuisveld tydens die Twizza-week te staan. Hy sal die daaropvolgende Maandag ook teen Hans Moore van Benoni sake uitspook.
