  • Kearsney beat Michaelhouse by 64-22

Kearsney hosted Michaelhouse on what started out to be a windy, cold and wet day in Botha’s Hill, but was no doubt enhanced by the hosts winning 14 of the 18 rugby games played. Strangely though, the weather cleared just before the 1st XV kick-off, as if inviting attractive open running rugby from the two teams.

Both teams responded but it was Kearsney who showed their intentions as they scored the first try straight from the kick off. Fly-half Cameron Ritchie collected a loose ball and fed the backs, when eighthman Brady Erlich linked and made good yardage to combine with centre Matthew Watts, which was brought down in the visitors’ 22m. From the breakdown, centre Cameron Craze fed flanker Luke Croshaw to break the defensive line to score under the posts. James Sutherland converted.

It was 10 minutes later when Kearsney scored their second try; after good continuity play and many phases when prominent hooker Dylan Richardson collected a pass on an angled run from Cameron Ritchie, to score the first of his four tries for the day.

The visitors’ first real opportunity came from a sniping run from the fly-half but his final pass was intercepted by the ever-present flanker Croshaw and three phases later, after some good interplay between backs and forwards, centre Watts dived over in the left-hand corner for a 17-0 lead.

Two minutes later Kearsney was awarded a penalty in a strong attacking position which followed some good play. The captain opted for a line-out which offered Richardson his second try, courtesy of a well-executed line-out maul. Sutherland converted for a 24-0 lead.

Kearsney’s fifth try came from a stripped tackle by Erlich which the hosts carried up field and back to the right-hand side when Ritchie broke a half tackle with Erlich the perfect link to winger Reece Daniel to dive over. Sutherland again converted.

Michaelhouse ended the half with a try in the left-hand corner after sustained pressure play in the hosts’ 22m area. Half time score was 31 – 5 to Kearsney.

The hosts started the second half strongly and from a line-out setup flanker James Miller ran well to link with Richardson who dived over in the right-hand corner. Michaelhouse enjoyed some time in the attacking zone now, but Kearsney scored again from a line-out just inside their own half. Ritchie penetrated the line with a well-executed move and ran almost 40m before passing to winger Reece Daniel in full flight to score his second try. Sutherland converted.

Michaelhouse enjoyed a better period of play and soon scored a well-executed line-out maul converted try.

Kearsney responded quickly from a right hand scrum using the blindside winger to carve the defence and offload in time for winger Sutherland to dive over in the left corner and converting his own try for a 50 – 12 lead.

Michaelhouse scored another line-out maul try after the hosts were penalised with series of breakdown and offside infringements. Michaelhouse gained their fourth try from a Kearsney handling error which they moved wide quickly to score in the right-hand corner.

The hosts’ responded immediately and managed to win the ball back from the kick-off with Richardson collecting a pass following some good interplay and fending the first defender and outsprinting the cover defence to score his fourth try of the match which Sutherland converted.

With only a few seconds on the clock, Michaelhouse opted for a deep kick-off which Kearsney ran. Ritchie, finding a half gap and running close to 30m, found centre Craze who masterfully found Croshaw, with a long pass on his inside. Sutherland converted to seal a final crushing 64 – 22 win for the hosts.

Outstanding players for Kearsney were Cameron Ritchie, lock Jared Meyer, Luke Croshaw, centre Cameron Craze, Brady Erlich and hooker Dylan Richardson.

    Wildeklawer 2016 Results – Day 2

    Results – Day 1 – Grey High Festival 2016

    GREY HIGH 27 PARKTOWN 8
Grey High scored two tries in each half for a solid 27-8 win over Parktown in the final match of the opening day of the Standard Bank Grey Rugby Festival, powered by Powerade, at Grey in Port Elizabeth on Saturday.
Skipper David Masterson scored twice in the first half as the Grey forwards worked powerfully as a unit, driving back the Parktown pack in mauls to which the Johannesburg side had no answer.
That gave them a 15-3 lead at the break, with Parktown’s points coming from a penalty by flyhalf Ethan Anderson.
In the second half, Grey dominated territorially but came up against a determined Parktown defence. However, the home side would not be denied and flyhalf Lubabalo Dobela broke through to score a thrilling try, followed later by centre Josiah Twum-Baofo barging through the defence.
Parktown replied with a try by replacement wing Cole Rock with less than a minute remaining, but the day belonged to Grey, despite a number of unforced errors.
    Point-scorers:
Grey 27: tries by No 9 David Masterson 2, No 10 Lubabalo Dobela, No 12 Josiah Twum-Boafo; conversions by No 10 Lubabalo Dobela 2; penalty by No 10 Lubabalo Dobela
Parktown 8: try by No 23 Cole Rock; penalty by No 10 Ethan Anderson
    HUDSON PARK 11 MUIR 3
In a match where handling was difficult at times on a wet field following heavy overnight rain, Hudson Park came back from 3-0 down to register a hard-earned 11-3 win over Muir.
The Uitenhage side were first off the mark through a penalty by Neo Pepeta, but Hudson came back well to lead 5-3 at halftime after a good try by No 12 Siphamandla Krweqe. After a period of pressure, the centre took a gap and forced his way over from close range.
The East London boys dominated the second half and Muir battled to get out of their own half. On occasions when they threatened to break out, handling errors blunted any attacking chances.
Hudson had their chances as well, but Muir’s defence stood firm. However, the territorial domination resulted in two penalties, which eighth man Keenan Purcell converted to make the game safe for them.
    Point-scorers:
Hudson Park 11: try by No 12 Siphamandla Krweqe; penalties by No 8 Keenan Purcell 2
Muir 3: penalty by No 15 Neo Pepeta
    FRAMESBY 20 ST ALBAN’S 20
Framesby and St Alban’s fought out a thrilling draw as the fortunes in their match fluctuated from one side to the other.
Speedy Framesby wing Lindsay Potgieter showed scintillating form, beating the St Alban’s defence for pace on several occasions to cross for three tries.
Two of those came in the first half to give the PE side a 10-5 lead at halftime, but St Alban’s hit back immediately after the break when Conrad Lamprecht finished off an excellent backline move to score under the posts.
Framesby reclaimed the lead when Potgieter scored his third try, but St Alban’s again showed good finishing skills for their third try by Paul Teitge, which levelled the scores.
Framesby had the better of the game as they sought to break the deadlock, but St Alban’s kept them out to ensure the spoils were shared.
    Point-scorers
Framesby 20: tries by No 11 Lindsay Potgieter 3; penalty by No 15 Riaan van Rensburg, conversion by No 15 Riaan van Rensburg
St Alban’s 20: tries by No 14 Matthew Theart, No 6 Conrad Lamprecht, No 13 Paul Teitge; penalty by No 15 Cornell Korff; conversion by No 15 Cornell Korff

    DALE 74 ST DAVID’S 0
With centre Sibulele Mbana crossing for a hat-trick, Dale proved too slick for St David’s to run riot in a 74-0 victory, scoring 12 tries.
The Dalians seized the advantage early on and never let St David’s into the match as they led 29-0 at halftime.
In the second half, St David’s played a tighter game, using their forwards to press forward and although they camped on the Dale line at one stage, they could find no way through.
Instead it was Dale who looked dangerous every time they ran the ball, something which they showed a willingness to do throughout the match.
    Point-scorers:
Dale 74: tries by No 12 Sibulele Mbana 3, No 3 Hennie Otto, No 20 Sikhokhele Buhlungu, No 4 Viwe Ntontela, No 7 Kwanda Dimaza, No 10 Siposethu Dlongodlongo, No 11 Siphosoxolo Dlongodlongo, No 13 Siphamandla Matsinya, No 14 Litha Nkula, No 15 Aphelele Fassi; conversions by No 10 Siphosethu Dlongodlongo 6, No 1 Lunathi Fonte
    St David’s 0
    DANIEL PIENAAR 28 GRAEME 6
Daniel Pienaar and Graeme were involved in a closely fought encounter until midway through the second half when the Uitenhage side took control with three quick tries to run out comfortable 28-6 winners.
Graeme were full value for their efforts and trailed only 7-6 until well into the game before Daniel Pienaar’s territorial domination and hard running at the opposition defence finally told as fullback Dylan le Roux ran in two tries and flank Pieter Gunter one to ensure the victory.
Le Roux’s second try came as the teams ran the ball when time was up. Graeme conceded possession and the fullback chipped ahead, and used his pace to dot down behind the posts.
    Point-scorers:
Daniel Pienaar 28: tries by No 15 Dylan le Roux 2, No 14 Duwayne Nel, No 7 Pieter Gunter; conversions by No 15 Dylan le Roux 2, No 7 Pieter Gunter 2
Graeme 6: penalties by No 10 Sivu Ngqiyaza, No 15 Bukhosi Mnlambie

    QUEEN’S 40 PEARSON 18
After an evenly contested first half, which ended at 13-13, Queen’s seized their chances after the break to run Pearson ragged for a solid victory.
The PE side were not helped by two yellow cards within minutes of each other and in this period, Queen’s rammed home their advantage with three quick tries. It gave them a cushion that they were never in danger of losing and Pearson could only get a consolation try late in the second half.
The Queen’s backs were full of running and their forwards gave a robust display to have Pearson under pressure for much of the game.
    Point-scorers:
Queen’s 40: tries by No 2 Gareth Heidtmann, No 3 Sitsaba Moyake, No 5 Tristan Waller, No 8 Cameron Cato, No 15 Aviwe Mancotywa, No 18 Johan van Heerden 2; conversion by No 23 Keith Kroutz; penalty by No 23 Keith Kroutz

    Results of Wildeklawer 2016 – Day 1

    Puntemakers:

  • Skole-bielies in Kimberley slaags

Albei spanne beskik oor ’n gedugte agttal, terwyl albei spanne se senterpare was hoogstaande gehalte is.

    08:00: EG Jansen t. Louis Botha; 09:10: Oakdale Landbou t. Welkom Gimnasium; 10:20: Stellenberg t. Noord-Kaap; 11:30: Monument t. Selborne College; 12:40: HTS Middelburg t. Paul Roos Gimnasium; 13:50: Paarl Gimnasium t. Menlopark; 15:00: Hoër Jongenskool Paarl t. Waterkloof; 16:10: Grey-kollege t. Garsfontein; 17:20: Affies t. Outeniqua; 18:30: Diamantveld t. Boland Landbou.

    Puntemakers:

Lichtenburg 37 (16) – Drieë: Henk Venter, Henco Nel, Donovan Serfontein, Evardi Boshoff. Doelskoppe: Janco Schickerling (4). Strafdoele: Schickerling (3). Noordheuwel 3 (3) – Strafdoel: JC Fensham.

    Glenwood aiming for second Sanix-title

Sanix logoGlenwood High School from Durban will start their third attempt at the crown of the Sanix International schools rugby tournament tomorrow against Osaka Toin High School from Japan. Glenwood was crowned champions in their first attempt back in 2008.

In 2008 Glenwood had no trouble defeating Tarbes High School from France by 39-0 in the final. The team from Durban also attended the tournament in 2009 where they lost to eventual champions, Dax Landes from France, by 10-17 in the semi-final. Glenwood secured the third position by beating De la Salle from New Zealand by 37-10 in the play-off match.

Glenwood will also face Toin Gakuen High from Japan (Friday) and Queen Victoria from Fiji (Sunday) in their other Pool C encounters of this year’s tournament. The side from Durban is still unbeaten in South Africa and will be without a doubt strong contender to be crowned champions in Japan.

Grey College became the first South African champions in 2001 when they defeated St. Peter’s College of New Zealand by 41-3 in the final. The side from Bloemfontein was captained by scrumhalf, Rohan Myburgh, and his vice-captain was the lock, Francois van der Merwe, who later played for Western Province.

Boland Landbou was crowned champions the following year when they came out on top 32-10 against Sendai Ikue from Japan in the final. The Japanese club side defeated them by 23-0 in their pool game earlier in the competition.

Glenwood was crowned champions in 2008 when they also had no problems in defeating Tarbes High School of France by 39-0 in the final. Paarl Boys’ High (2014) and Monument (2006) also made it to the final when they attended, but fell over the last hurdle.
