  • Affies, Garsfontein the favourites in Schools SA20 playoffs at Willowmoore

Affies, Garsfontein the favourites in Schools SA20 playoffs at Willowmoore

Affies’ batsman Vihan Pretorius: Jean Le Roux

All roads lead to Benoni, specifically Willowmoore Park, for phase two of the Schools SA20 regional playoffs between the top two teams from the Northern GautengLimpopo, and Easterns regions.

They’ll battle it out for a place in the national final and a shot at ultimate glory at the University of Pretoria from 12-15 March.

Follow all the action live on SuperSport Schools(www.supersportschools.com)

The home of Eastern Cricket, Willowmoore Park will host all of the matches on four fields: the Willowmoore Park Oval, Willowmoore B, Willowmoore C, and Willowmoore D.

As expected, the Phase Two playoffs will bring some big guns together. The match between Hoërskool Kempton Park and Afrikaans Hoër Seunskool (Affies) will surely be the highlight of the first day. The Kempies, having won the Easterns leg, under the leadership of captain, Marko Richter, will pose a big threat, and not only to Affies.

Kempton Park’s frontline batsmen, Wian Pieters and Hanré van Deventer, hit their straps at just the right time, on the eve of the action in Benoni. They warmed up for the Schools SA20 playoffs by each scoring a century against Potchefstroom Gimnasium in the Finsbury League.

The Affies’ challenge will be fronted by the talented left-handed batsman Vihan Pretorius, who showed off his class throughout 2024. That earned him a place in the Northern u16 side, and he followed that up by representing the CSA Invitational team at the Khaya Majola Week in December. Then, at just 16 years of age, he turned out for the Northern Champions in the CSA u19 Cubs Week in early January.

Alongside Pretorius, all-rounder, Ruben Groenewald, will also have a massive role to play. As arguably the cleanest hitter of a cricket ball in the Affies’ side, his wicket will, without a doubt, be prized.

Merensky Landbou Akademie, the winners of the Limpopo leg of the Schools SA20, will have their work cut out for them. They face a tough challenge, with Hoërskool Garsfontein‘s Ysbere waiting for them in the first round. Garsfontein is off to an unbeaten start to the season, mostly thanks to the bat of the talented Xander Venter, and they’re viewed as a team that could go all the way.

Merensky’s clash with the Ysbere will be followed by two equally challenging encounters, with that Friday morning match being followed by an outing against Hoërskool Kempton Park on Friday afternoon and, then, they take on Affies on Saturday morning.

St Benedict’s College, the Easterns’ runner-up, will face Limpopo’s runner-up, Phalaborwa Hub, in their opening match. Getting away to a winning start and building momentum will be important to both sides. Bennies will tackle Affies on Friday afternoon.

All teams will play two matches on both Friday and Saturday, while the final will be the only match taking place on Sunday.

Matches start at 10:00 and 14:00 on Friday and Saturday. The Final starts at 09:30 on Sunday.

Southern suburbs’ bragging rights will be on the line on Wednesday when Bishops Diocesan College faces Rondebosch Boys’ High in round two of the SACS Nite Series in Cape Town.

The highly anticipated Bish/Bosch clash takes place at the SACS Aquatic Centre and could be a humdinger as it brings together two teams in red-hot form.

Bishops and ‘Bosch opened their respective Nite Series campaigns with victories against Wynberg Boys’ High and Reddam House Constantia a week ago.

Coach Jabulani Sibiya’s troops thumped Wynberg 15-6 while ‘Bosch, under the guidance of coach Jared Wingate-Pearse, outscored Reddam House Constantia20-10.

Then, the sides headed off to Makhanda to contest the annual St Andrew’’ College (SAC) Shield from Thursday to Sunday.

They were drawn in different groups and both ended up topping their pools. That meant they avoided one another in the playoffs.

It was, however, ‘Bosch who reigned supreme. They beat St John’s College 12-7 in the final to claim the silverware. Bishops, meanwhile, finished in third place after defeating Selborne College 9-4 in the bronze medal match.

The Nite Series showdown couldn’t have come at a better time with the rivals playing at a high level.

They last met in the Bishops Water Polo Tournament, with Rondebosch sneaking a tight 2-1 victory.

There are plenty of interesting matchups to look forward to. At the back, goalkeepers, Michael Mafunda and Joel O’Brien, will have key roles to play. In front of them, both sides boast strong defences. Bishops will look to Timothy Young to set the tone for them, while Dante Moore and James Pinnock will need to be at their best for ‘Bosch.

Up front is where the match could be won or lost.

Bishops will bank on Matt Fenn to have another scorcher after netting eight times in round one’s win over Wynberg. Owen Cross also impressed in that high-scoring victory.

As for ‘Bosch, they are spoilt for choices in attack, with Noah Reiback, who has been in prolific form of late, a dangerman for them.

Jack Robinson is another player to keep an eye on. He scored seven of his team’s 20 goals against Reddam.

While individual brilliance could prove to be the difference, team effort within both camps will be the key to victory.

    Teams

Rondebosch Boys’ High: Joel O’Brien, Ryan Lawlor, Zack Labuschangne, James Pinnock, Dante Moore, Kieran Bennewith, Rupert Robinson, Matthew Galpin, Luke Burger, Noah Reiback, Jack Robinson, Joshua Ripsold, Ben Gray.

Bishops Diocesan College: Michael Mafunda, Luke Cartwright, Harry Ford, Owen Cross, Jack Grout, Timothy Young, Noah Edmunds, Milo Letschert, Heath Blackwell, Daniel van der Heever, James Malan, Matt Fenn, Alex Laspatzis.

Executing the game plan and maintaining concentration for four chukkas will be the focus for Reddam House Constantia when they face Paul Roos Gimnasium (PRG) in round two of the SACS Nite Series in Cape Town on Wednesday.

Reddam opened their Nite Series campaign with a 10-20 loss against Rondebosch Boys’s High at the SACS Aquatic Centre a week ago.

In that clash, coach Nick Tinkler‘s charges put up a brave showing and fought tooth and nail until the final whistle.

Offensively, they did well, with Matthew Cox, Alakay Harwood, and Oliver Finlayson striking once each, while the Brown brothers, Adam and Blake, scored four and three goals, respectively.

“We lost concentration for short periods of time, and that’s when they scored multiple goals in quick succession,” Tinkler said in his assessment of the match against a ‘Bosch team that went on to lift the SAC Shield on Sunday.

“We were in the game for large amounts of time, which was a huge positive, but we need to be playing for four full chukkas in order to beat strong teams,” he said.

Reddam had a jam-packed pre-season programme, which saw them participate in the PRG Festival and Bishops Water Polo Tournament earlier this month.

Those two campaigns assisted coach Tinkler to test combinations and variations.

At the end of 2024, only captain Matt Mincher bade farewell to the team, which means Reddam House returns an experienced team for 2025.

“Our preparation has been good,” Tinkler further told SuperSport Schools Plus. “The boys have been training consistently well. We have a larger first team squad this year, which has helped create some healthy competition in the team, and we are looking forward to a good season ahead.

“We lost Matt [Mincher], but we have some good up-and-coming talents, such as Alakay Harwood, and two talented goalkeepers in Guy Hart and Brodie Pascoe.”

Reddam will be brimming with confidence heading into their clash against PRG considering the outcome of their last meeting. During the Bishops Festival, it was Reddam who came out on top, winning 7-3.

Tinkler is optimistic they can get the better of PRG again if they work on one key aspect of their game. “I think we just need to play consistently for four chukkas,” he explained.

“The quality of the teams in the Western Cape is so high that you cannot afford to lose concentration at all in games like this.

“If we can execute our plan for the game from beginning to end, then we should hopefully be able to have a good game against PRG.”

The mid-week showdown against the Stellenbosch outfit will prepare Reddam for the Grey College ITEC Water Polo Tournament, which takes place from Thursday, 30 January, to Sunday, 2 February, in Bloemfontein.

After that, the Cape Town school will head to East London for the annual Vides Water Polo Tournament, which is hosted by Selborne College.

The team has set realistic goals for the forthcoming tournaments, and the coach wants to see his players reach their full potential.

“We have set ourselves goals of making the top four of all tournaments that we take part in this year, including the Schools League and the Nite Series.

“However, we know that we are not limited to the top four and can go all the way in any one of the tournaments that we take part in. I am looking forward to seeing this group reach their full potential this season,” he ended.

SARAWAK. – The South Africa u19 Women have secured their place in the ICC u19 Women’s T20 World Cup 2025 semifinals, with one Super Six match still to play against USA on Tuesday, 28 January (04h30 SAST).

This achievement marks a significant step forward for SA, who fell short of a semifinal spot in the inaugural ICC U19 Women’s T20 World Cup held at home in 2023, missing out due to net run rate.

The team’s consistent excellence in this year’s tournament highlights their determination and growth, with performances that have showcased a competitive edge on the global stage.

They began their campaign with an impressive victory over New Zealand and continued their dominance by defeating Samoa and Nigeria in Group C.

A confident win over Ireland in their first Super Six fixture further solidified their position in the tournament.

Titans duo, Monalisa Legodi and Simoné Lourens have played pivotal roles in the team’s success and shared their thoughts on the team’s journey, preparation, and the upcoming match.

Legodi shared her excitement about the team’s achievements:

“Reaching the semifinal of the ICC U19 Women’s T20 World Cup is an incredible achievement! It feels amazing to be competing with the best teams in the world, and it’s a testament to the hard work we’ve put in. While we’re thrilled to have made it this far, we know the job isn’t done yet. Our focus remains on giving our best in every match ahead.

“We’ve been taking it one game at a time, analysing our performances, and learning from every match. There’s a real sense of unity in the squad, and we’ve stayed positive while working hard to remain composed under pressure.

“Mentally, I focus on staying calm and clear about my role in the team, while physically ensuring I’m prepared through proper warm-ups and mental readiness. In key moments, it’s all about trusting my training and staying present in the game,” said Legodi.

Lourens reflected on the team’s journey and what lies ahead:

“It feels incredible to have reached the semifinals, and I’m so grateful for this opportunity. It’s a major milestone and we’ve worked tirelessly to get here. There’s a mix of excitement and focus as we prepare for what we know will be tougher challenges ahead.

“Our mindset has been all about staying grounded and taking it one game at a time. While we’re proud of our performances so far, we know the importance of consistency and sticking to our plans.

“For me, staying calm under pressure is key. I focus on playing each ball on its merit and not getting overwhelmed by the moment. Trusting my preparation and the hard work leading up to this World Cup has been vital. The support from my family at home, my batting partner Jemma Botha, and the entire team has given me so much confidence,” said Lourens.

    Beknopte telkaarte:

HTS Middelburg 206 (ST Rorich 30, Ruben Jooste 29, Dawid van Rooyen 29, Eddie Harris 28, Armand Kotze 25, Ekstras 22, Altus van Heerden 20; Eduan Strydom 3/25, Ricardo Ras 2/41); Hoërskool Middelburg 211/5 (Hendre Nel 87*, Eduan Strydom 53, Zubair Desai 24, Herman Potgieter 21, Ekstras 21; Henco Britz 4/35). Hoërskool Middelburg wen met vyf paaltjies.

Ben Vorster 132 (Lourens Kriel 43, Talenta Ndlovu 30; Dave Pelzer 4/39, Jaco Botha 3/16); Heidelberg Volkskool 133/0 (Maro Hartkopf 69*, Quentin Dietrehsen 51*).

    Beknopte telkaarte:

Wesvalia 54 (M Kinnear 15; Rinaldo Bornman 7/20, Timothy Baker 2/28); Merensky Landbou Akademie 56/6 (Rinaldo Bornman 15; Z Stopford 3/15, J Greyling 2/12). Merensky Landbou Akademie wen met vier paaltjies.

Hoërskool Klerksdorp 193 (Jordan van der Schyff 57, Ekstras 46, Gerrit Koen 36, Luken Maritz 20; Jean Loock 3/30, Jayden Scholtz 3/31, Nathan Erasmus 2/31); Hoërskool Secunda 194/4 (Umar Badat 54*, Nijan Swart 38, Adries Coetzer 27; Gerrit Koen 2/33). Hoërskool Secunda wen met ses paaltjies.

Linden 126 (N Dunn 48, C de Lange 21; Jayden van Wyk 4/6, Luke Pretorius 2/10, Brento Francis 2/12); Dr. EG Jansen 129/6 (Henri Coetzee 27, Ekstras 22, Juan Ungerer 20*; M Steyn 2/15, T Muller 2/31).

    Beknopte telkaarte:

Hoërskool Kempton Park 312/3 (Hanre van Deventer 103, Wian Pieters 101, Marko Richter 33*, Sheldon Kruger 24, Stian de Villiers 21*;Jhandre Coetzee 3/74); Potchefstroom Gimnasium 242 (Lukas Kotze 70, Christivan Coetzer 44, Ulrich Botha 31; Kristian du Plessis 2/21, Garth van Deventer 2/29, Ethan Kotze 2/52). Hoërskool Kempton Park wen met 70 lopies.

Hoërskool Centurion 115 (Morne Prinsloo 43, Ekstras 24; Juan Theunnissen 3/6, Leejan van Jaarsveld 2/13, Frank van der Westhuizen 2/22); Montana 117/6 (Luka Bairos 40, Ekstras 24; Kyle Fourie 2/25). Montana wen met vier paaltjies.

Marais Viljoen 115 (Jaden Govender 67; Kenan Shaw 5/23); Hans Moore 117/0 (Zander Swart 62*, Stephan Vermaak 44*). Hans Moore wen met tien paaltjies.

St John’s wins at Grey College, St Andrew’s School trumps KES

Malan du Plessis carved a fluent half-century that created the foundation for St John’s College’s 28-run win over Grey College at Grey College on Sunday, while FG Botha’s half-century powered St Andrew’s School to a 77-run victory over King Edward VII School (KES).

St John’s victory was their first over Grey in seven years. It also marked a successful tour of Bloemfontein for the Johannesburg side, who also defeated St Andrew’s on Saturday.

Du Plessis crunched six fours and four sixes for his 68 off 51 to help St John’s make 240 all out in 39.4 overs in their one-day match against Grey College. Later in the day, he bagged a brace of wickets as St John’s dismissed the home side for 212 in 39.3 overs.

St John’s won the toss and elected to bat first but ran into choppy waters almost immediately, losing two early wickets, with Herman Basson and Nkosana Sibiya back in the visitor’s dugout by the close of the sixth over.

Darshik Lutchman (33) offered some resistance, but it wasn’t until Du Plessis and Aiden Barberrini batted together that St John’s seized control. Barberrini anchored their 98-run sixth-wicket partnership while Du Plessis played his shots.

Otto Krause and Edrich Hannekom bagged three wickets each for Grey as they strived to keep the visitors’ total within reach.  Krause finished with three for 51 from seven overs, while Hanekom returned a very tidy three wickets for 17 runs in eight overs.

The hosts made a good start to their run chase with a 52-run opening stand between Christian Kind (29) and Pieter Smit. After Kind’s dismissal, Smit shared the crease with four other batsmen, but he found himself fighting a lone battle against the St John’s bowling attack. He almost made it to triple figures, cracking 12 fours and a single six for his outstanding 98 from 97 balls.

However, his effort was in vain, and the St John’s attack did the trick. Ethan Robinson was their most successful bowler, claiming three wickets for 37 runs in eight overs, while Du Plessis bagged two wickets for 30 runs in eight overs.

The other Johannesburg side touring Bloemfontein, KES, was not as successful. They failed to follow up their big victory over Grey College on Saturday with another over St Andrew’s School.

FG Botha’s 84 helped St Andrew’s post a total of 214 all out in 45.1 overs. Then, in a display of brilliance with the ball, he snared four wickets for 32 runs as  Saints bowled KES out for only 137 in 32.2 overs. With a dazzling performance, the all-rounder showed why he was named the Player of the Week at Cricket South Africa’s National u16 Week.

The hosts won the toss, elected to bat first, and put their best foot forward, with Naudé Botha and Andrew Sobiech stitching together a 62-run opening partnership that provided the innings with a solid foundation. However, after the pair’s dismissals, the hosts struggled to build partnerships.

It wasn’t until Reuben van Aarde joined FG Botha in the middle that they got it right. Botha had arrived at the crease in the 12th over, after his namesake Naudé Botha’s dismissal. His combination with his first two partners didn’t produce much, but he and Van Aarde then shared a telling 51-run fourth-wicket stand.

Christian Sabela and Luke Clark bowled superbly and finished with four wickets each. Clark led the way with four wickets for 27 runs in seven overs and Sabela captured four wickets for 34 runs in 9.1 overs. However, FG Botha’s four-wicket haul for St Andrew’s was an effective counter to their efforts. He got rid of Matthew Bromley, Eric Southey, Wade McQuinn, and Matthew Burgess to help St Andrew’s take control.

Opening batsman Tiago Dias stood tall for KES, scoring a patient 63 off 93 deliveries. However, his effort lacked support from the rest of the KES batting lineup. Only Matthew Bromley passed the 20-run mark, with a breezy 22 off 30 balls. The rest simply failed to get their eye in.

    Scorecards

St John’s 240/10 (Malan du Plessis 68, Aiden Barberrini 48, Henru de Wet 3/17, Otto Krause 3/51). Grey College 212/10 (Pieter Smit 98, Christian Kind 29, Ethan Robinson 3/37, Malan du Plessis 2/30). St John’s won by 28 runs.
