  • Grey High School to visit The Graveyard for the first time since 2019

Grey High School of Gqeberha’s First XV will be wary of their visit to The Graveyard in Qonce (formerly King William’s Town) today.

The team from Gqeberha’s last defeat at the field was in 2017 when Dale College came out on top by the narrowest of margins of 28-27.

It would be a record to be proud of but the last encounter between the two sides at The Graveyard in 2022 was cancelled due to the tragic bus tragedy that hit Dale College in the week leading to the clash.

It will therefore also be an emotional day for Dale College as they take the field. In addition, the two teams didn’t play each other during the two years (2020 and 2021) which were affected by the Covid-pandemic.

In the last encounter between the two sides at The Graveyard in 2019 – Grey High came out on top by 28-25.

Dale College secured a convincing 46-7 victory over Ooskus Gimnasium (formerly Hoërskool Grens) last week. Grey also eased past Muir College by 60-0 in their clash in Uitenhage last week.

Selborne College will host Queen’s College in a FNB Classic Clash on Saturday at 15:00.

The hosts have suffered only one defeat thus far against Pretoria Boys’ High (21-26) during the annual King Edward VII Easter Festival in Johannesburg. In their other clash during the festival, they smashed Eldoraigne by 31-3.

Queen’s College also attended the KES Easter Festival and lost against Jeppe High School for Boys (6-47) before ending the tour on a high with a 38-0 victory over Ben Vorster from Tzaneen. Jeppe defeated Grey College earlier in the week before the KES Easter Festival and was without a doubt on a high.

  • Top seeds cruise, but some upsets on day one of SA Schools Closed Squash Champs

Round one of the South African Schools Closed Squash Championships, being played in Johannesburg at the Barrow Squash Centre at St John’s College and at Roedean School, went smoothly for the top four seeds in the three age groups – u19, u16 and u14 -in the opening round on Friday. Round two, though, produced some upsets.

In the boys’ u14 competition, third-seed Liam Hart was surprised by sixth-seed Mangaliso Mbatha, who produced a dominating performance to win 11-7, 11-3, 11-8.

There was also an upset in the second round of the girls’ u14 event, with no. 5, Paisley Edkins, comfortably accounting for fourth-seed Rebecca Scheckter, running out an 11-6, 11-8, 11-6 winner.

It was also a case of five beating four in the girls’ u16 age group, with Vivienne van der Schyff taking down Starla Phillips in four games, 11-6, 7-11, 11-7, 11-7.

That wasn’t the sole upset in the girls’ u16 age group. Sheryl Harborth, the sixth-seed, got the better of third-seed Kate van Biljon, triumphing 3-2 after a tremendous tussle, which included three games that went past 11 points – 10-12, 13-11, 11-8, 4-11 and 12-10.

In the last of the second round’s surprises, Western Province’s Alex Azevado ousted Border’s Cara Knott, also a good hockey player, in another win for a fifth-seed over a fourth-seed. There was little to separate the two, with Azevado claiming a 3-2 victory.

Meanwhile, the boys’ u19 top-seed Luhann Groenewald ruthlessly brushed aside the challenge of Marco van Rooyen, surrendering only five points in a one-sided contest.

Benji Newman, the u16 no.1 was a convincing 3-0 winner against Cobus Schimper in his only outing of the day, while u14 top-seed Déwan Borstlap cruised to successive 3-0 victories over Evan Janse van Rensburg and Bevan Garlick.

It was also smooth sailing for girls’ u19 top-seed Chanté Leppan, who won 3-0 against Mayra Bytebier, to match her fellow Hoërskool Zwartkop learner, boys’ u19 no. 1, Luhann Groenewald.

Makayla Naidoo, from St John’s DSG, the number one seed in the u16 division, comfortably accounted for Amy Gerber and Tamyln Galliers, without dropping a game.

The girls’ u14 top-seed, Rylee Howells, also from the KZN capital, and another product of the renowned Epworth squash factory, saw off Rebecca Scheckter and Paisley Edkins in straight games, finding it a lot easier against Edkins who, of course, upset Scheckter.

  • Jeppe tackles Westville, Parktown hosts KES in Gauteng hockey clashes

Westville captain and KZN Coastal u18A defender Owen Slack will be a key player for the Griffin when they take on Jeppe.
Westville captain and KZN Coastal u18A defender Owen Slack will be a key player for the Griffin when they take on Jeppe.

Jeppe High School for Boys will have a point to prove on Saturday morning when they take on Westville Boys’ High on the Boden AstroTurf.

Catch the action live at 10:00 on Saturday on SuperSport Schools

Jeppe, under coach Siya Sityana, enters the match on the back of an unusually large defeat, having gone down 1-4 to St David’s Marist Inanda in their most recent outing. As a hockey school, they boast a proud record and a gritty reputation, so Westville can expect a strong response from the home side.

Since Sityana took charge this year, Jeppe has contested two high-profile festivals, the Nomads Festival, at Maritzburg College, and the KES Easter Festival.

At College, they made a slow start, losing their first three matches, but they finished on an optimistic note, recording victories in their last two outings.

Closer to home, at KES, they claimed three wins, beating Waterkloof 4-1, along with a pair of 2-0 victories over St Charles College and Eldoraigne. There were also losses by one goal to Rondebosch (0-1) and Kearsney College (1-2).

However, a 1-0 win over St Stithians last weekend, at home, was cause for optimism, before the surprisingly big setback against St David’s.

Meanwhile, the Griffin also head into the contest off the back of a loss, although, truth be told, it was not totally unexpected, as they went down 1-3 to Durban High School, who have, so far, won every one of their matches this season, in a high-quality clash at The Coliseum.

Westville, though, has displayed some good form in 2024. They opened the season with a 2-0 win over Michaelhouse and then won all of their matches on the first two days of the Coastal Cup, grabbing a narrow 1-0 win over Pearson, winning 2-0 against Paarl Boys’ High, and outplaying Waterkloof 4-0.

On day three, however, they suffered a surprising defeat to a good Garsfontein team, going down 1-3.

It’s tough game to pick a favourite. Jeppe has been inconsistent this season, while Westville has stumbled recently. Still, they’re both capable of producing very good hockey.

Parktown Boys’ High hosts King Edward VII on Saturday and that should be a keenly contested clash. Both started their seasons slowly in the Founders and Nomads festivals respectively, but they were much better at the KES Easter Festival that followed.

Check out their game at 10:45 on Saturday on SuperSport Schools

Gqeberha’s Hoërskool Framesby visits Worcester on Saturday for an enticing showdown with HTS Drostdy.

Watch the game live on SuperSport Schools – Register Now Link to the match

Framesby played some very good rugby at the Kearsney Easter Festival, where they produced a frantic finish to edge out Drostdy’s neighbours, Worcester Gimnasium, 36-34, on the last day.

They also beat the hosts, Kearsney College, 18-17, in their first match and gave Monument everything they could handle before going down 17-22.

Framesby, however, faces a Drostdy side with their tails up. Last weekend, “the Donkeys” cruised to a convincing 46-10 victory over Hugenote and earlier in the year, at the NMI Toyota North-South Tournament, they beat Hoërskool Nelspruit 34-27 but went down 15-44 to high-flying Dr EG Jansen.

Saturday’s battle between the two packs of forwards promises to produce fireworks, with neither side accustomed to taking a step back.

Tertius Wantenaar, Daniel Mellet and Sandro Smit make up the Drostdy front row. They’ll be up against big Sean Vermaak, Ewald Labuschagne, and his namesake at hooker, Ewald Muller.

After an impressive win against an in-form Worcester Gimnasium last weekend, Swartland will aim to use that encouraging victory as a springboard to success against the visiting side from Hermanus this weekend.

Carlo van der Merwe starred at flyhalf in their win over Worcester, slotting four penalties and two crucial conversions, to see his side to a 26-24 victory.

This weekend, though, Van der Merwe starts at inside centre while Iminathi Njozela wears the number 10 jersey.

The visitors will look to the likes of Kyle Lewis and Giano da Kosta to help them contain the Swartland attack, while captain Reon Sparkham and his fellow forwards do battle for dominance up front.

  • DGC and Eunice braced for new challenges

Durban Girls’ College coach Chardinay Penniston and captain Emily Macquet show off the St Mary’s Hockey Festival winners’ trophy.

Newly crowned St Mary’s Hockey Festival champions, Durban Girls’ College (DGC), return to action this weekend with a short trip to Danville Park Girls’ High, while the runners-up at last week’s festival, Eunice, take on Garsfontein.

It has taken a while for DGC to let it sink in that they lifted the St Mary’s Festival trophy. It felt like a dream at first. Last year, they played their hearts out, only to finish seventh. This year, they had a relatively young team that stood toe-to-toe with the best.

On the eve of the final, they convincingly handed the 2023 champions, Eunice, their first defeat of the event. They met the red-hot Free State team again in the final and proved that their win from the previous day had not been a fluke, with a thrilling 3-2 victory securing them the title of 2024 champions.

After a week of basking in the glory of their accomplishment, coach Chardinay Penniston’s charges now must turn their focus towards the challenge that lies in front of them, Danville. While there might be daylight between Eunice and Danville’s rankings, DGC is not paying attention to the difference. “We have the same mindset we had at St Mary’s. We take things a game at a time and will play our best against each team,” Penniston said.

Rather than put their triumphant campaign behind them, DGC will use the memories of their St Mary’s run as fuel to help them scale new mountains. One of those mountains is their school league. Their goal is to win the title. The girls understand the task won’t be an easy one and are putting in more hours and effort at training.

“We are very motivated because there are three more major goals that we are hoping to succeed in: St Anne’s, the KZN Spar finals, and qualifying for the Top 12 Tournament. We are going to continue to work hard and prepare ourselves for the rest of the year,” explained Penniston.

St Mary’s Festival runners-up, Eunice, take on Garsfontein on Friday. Coach Nika Coertzen’s charges will not let the loss to DGC in the final define them as a unit. Inexperienced and young compared to last season’s 1st XI, they played excellent hockey throughout the festival and will continue their path of growth as Coertzen nurtures the class of 2024 into a force.

Eunice has an ambitious young side and they’re keen to emulate the outstanding 2023 team, which finished the year as the top-ranked school in the country.

After their meeting with Eunice, Garsfontein, dauntingly, heads straight into a contest with Oranje, for so long the pacesetters in South African schoolgirls’ hockey, and the form team heading into the St Mary’s Festival.

Garsfontein is in for a tough test. Gyster van Schalkwyk’s outfit, which finished fifth at St Mary’s, has been strong so far this year and has scored goals in bucketloads. Captained by Anriette Otto, Oranje is one of the best-structured teams to be found anywhere and, as always, they’re gunning for top honours this season.

“I do believe and can say with confidence that we’ve prepared well but preparation never stops as we are always seeking to improve and better ourselves in the game we love so dearly,” said Van Schalkwyk.

In the WesGrow league, Kirsten Beneke‘s charges, Voortrekker (Bethlehem), spring into action with a contest against Hoërskool Fichardtpark. Voortrekker started the year with a successful Balling Festival and followed that up with a collection of good results at the Greg Beling Festival, in East London, and the St Stithians Festival, in Johannesburg.

Beneke’s team shares a common goal with DGC. “This year’s results, thus far, have been exceptional. Our main goal for this year is to attend the Top 12 Tournament,” she said. “The table has been changing rapidly every week, and we hope to keep improving and make the cut.”

With top 12 places a motivating factor, and teams making their intentions to be part of the event clear, this week promises more blockbuster hockey action.
