{"id":14718,"date":"2023-04-17T15:00:37","date_gmt":"2023-04-17T13:00:37","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/rugby.supersportschools.com\/?p=14718"},"modified":"2023-04-17T15:00:37","modified_gmt":"2023-04-17T13:00:37","slug":"grey-college-defend-themselves-to-19-17-victory-over-kwaggas","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/test.ssschoolsplus.co.za\/?p=14718","title":{"rendered":"Grey College defend themselves to 19-17 victory over Kwaggas"},"content":{"rendered":"<figure id=\"attachment_14758\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-14758\" style=\"width: 400px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-14758\" src=\"https:\/\/rugby.supersportschools.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/04\/News-Grey-College-Schools-Rugby-300x240.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"400\" height=\"320\" srcset=\"https:\/\/test.ssschoolsplus.co.za\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/04\/News-Grey-College-Schools-Rugby-300x240.jpg 300w, https:\/\/test.ssschoolsplus.co.za\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/04\/News-Grey-College-Schools-Rugby-768x614.jpg 768w, https:\/\/test.ssschoolsplus.co.za\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/04\/News-Grey-College-Schools-Rugby.jpg 1024w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 400px) 100vw, 400px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-14758\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">PHOTO: Francois Boshoff<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><b>Grey College<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> remained steadfast in defence to hold on to the smallest of leading margins and claim a hard-fought victory over<\/span><b> Outeniqua<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Watch the game again on <strong>SuperSport Schools<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/bit.ly\/KwaggaGrey2023\">here<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The team from Bloemfontein met their most formidable challenge this season in George against an inspired Kwagga team who remained within arm\u2019s length of the visitors to the very end, with Grey walking away as victors by 19-12.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The match lived up to its high expectations from the start, with both teams showcasing clinical, high-tempo rugby from the kickoff.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Grey struck first when their playmaker fullback, <\/span><b>Vincent Wolhuter<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, broke the line and gave the ball to the dynamic flanker, <\/span><b>Jean-Henri Smit<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, who could distribute it to the centre, <\/span><b>Benito Goeda, <\/b>who has been exceptional this year,<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to score.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Grey looked like they were about to start running away with it when they scored their second try shortly after. <\/span><b>Liam van Wyk<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (hooker) managed to dot the ball down after a dominant rolling maul movement.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Outeniqua continued to enjoy ball possession though, and they never seemed to lose energy in attack as they kept battering at the Grey defensive line.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Their 2022 SA Schools A fullback, <\/span><b>JT Strydom<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, began reducing the deficit with a well-struck penalty conversion with about 10 minutes left in the half.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">He had another opportunity as Grey was reduced to 14 players with a yellow card five minutes later but his second attempt was unsuccessful.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The home team maintained the pressure and were rewarded with a penalty try at the very end of the first half, which also meant that Grey were reduced to 13 men for the beginning of the second.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Kwaggas had their tails up and head boy,<\/span><b> Ashwin Damons<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (centre),\u00a0 collected a poorly fielded kick forward by his flyhalf, <\/span><b>Andrew Stopforth<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and slipped straight through the middle to gain the lead for the home team within a minute of the second half\u2019s kickoff.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The advantage was short-lived though. The Bloemfontein boys regained the lead within five minutes when <\/span><b>Pieter van der Merwe<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (centre) showed immense speed and broke through to allow Goeda to go over for his second try of the day.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Crucially, <\/span><b>Ian van der Merwe <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">(flyhalf) kept his cool and was able to add the conversion as these would be the final points scored in the match with 30 minutes still left on the clock.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Outeniqua maintained the pressure throughout the rest of the half, but Grey will take immense pride in the character shown as they were scrambling to prevent the Kwaggas from converting said pressure into points.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It was not the prettiest Grey rugby we have seen this year by a long shot, but the Grey boys continued shutting down the Outeniqua attack when it looked certain that the home team would get over the line.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Goeda, Wolhuter and Ian van der Merwe stood out for Grey, and though this was not the overbearing performance we have come to know, partly due to Outeniqua\u2019s industrious attacking play, it was a trial by fire for the Grey team which they passed by gritting their teeth and doing the hard stuff.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It can be argued that coming away with a difficult win like this is even better than a 50-point romp.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Grey were defending in their danger zone with a yellow card, which turned into two yellow cards, for what seemed like an eternity, but captain,<strong> JJ Theron<\/strong> (no. 8), and his men stood strong in the face of an inspired Outeniqua attack.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For Outeniqua, it will, unfortunately, be a case of what could\u2019ve been, as they missed two penalty kicks, and were unable to convert lengthy attacking play into points.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Regardless, the home team have shown that they deserve to be considered among the best, as they gave Grey, who will surely now be considered the top South African school team at the moment, a real run for their money.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Their replacement scrumhalf,<\/span><b> Ellie Meyer<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, played phenomenally and stepped up to convert Damons\u2019 try.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Their forwards also managed to match a Grey pack that has been demolishing their opposition this year up front.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Though they will be bitterly disappointed by the loss, their play on the day bodes extremely well for the rest of the season and it would be no surprise if this is their only loss of the season.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As for Grey, they seem to be unstoppable at the moment, but face another mammoth challenge in the form of<\/span><b> Garsfontein <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">in two weeks\u2019 time at the <\/span><b>Wildeklawer Festival<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Garsfontein just beat <\/span><b>Affies<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> 45-38 to extend their unbeaten run this season.
