\"\"The Afrikaanse Ho\u00ebr Meisieskool<\/strong> of Pretoria has the biggest representation with two players in the Protea’s netball squad that will take part in the World Cup tournament that will be hosted by South Africa in Cape Town from 28 July until 6 August later this year.<\/p>\n

The two Affies in the squad is Jeante Strydom<\/strong> (goal scorer) and Izette Griesel<\/strong> (wing attack). The school from Pretoria has a proud netball heritage and has been one of the top-performing schools at school level. Their netball programme is headed up by Maggie du Plessis<\/strong>, who received a Service Award in 2021 from World Netball<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Affies’\u00a0 first team is also coached by a former Protea captain Amanda Mynhardt<\/strong>. South Africa are captained by Bongiwe Msomi<\/strong> at this year’s World Cup tournament which will be hosted by the International Convention Centre in the Mother City.<\/p>\n

Msomi is a product of the Chief Luthayi High School in Durban.<\/p>\n

Bloemfontein also boasts of some representation within the squad. Elmere van der Berg<\/strong> (Jim Fouche) and Fifi Nketsa<\/strong> (Sentraal) both completed their schooling career in the City of Roses.<\/p>\n

Phumza Maweni <\/strong>(goal assist), who will play in her last World Cup, attended Kwamfundo Secondary<\/strong> in Khayelitsha. She however didn’t play netball in high school and only took up the sport again after leaving school.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

This will be the first time that South Africa will host the World Cup which is held every four years. The inaugural tournament was hosted by England back in 1963.<\/p>\n

South Africa is grouped with Jamaica, Wales and Sri Lanka in Group C for the tournament. The Proteas’ best performance at the World Cup is still when they were runners-up in 1995 losing against Australia (48-68) in the final.<\/p>\n

The Proteas did bag a fourth place in the last World Cup which was hosted in Liverpool, England in 2019.<\/p>\n

Karla Pretorius<\/strong> (Zwartkop) was named the Player of the Tournament<\/strong> after the conclusion of the World Cup in 2019. She will once again be in action for the Proteas this year. Msomi, Griesel, Maweni and Khanyisa Chawane<\/strong> (Ben Vorster) are the only returning members from the 2019 squad with Pretorius.<\/p>\n
