{"id":29441,"date":"2023-11-14T12:27:42","date_gmt":"2023-11-14T10:27:42","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/hockey.supersportschools.com\/?p=2196"},"modified":"2023-11-14T12:27:42","modified_gmt":"2023-11-14T10:27:42","slug":"sa-captains-discuss-life-changing-international-tour","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/test.ssschoolsplus.co.za\/?p=29441","title":{"rendered":"SA captains discuss life-changing international tour"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-2202 alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/test.ssschoolsplus.co.za\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/11\/mirnawin-cup-141123-300x277.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"277\" \/>The <strong>South African u17 boys&#8217; and girls&#8217; hockey teams<\/strong> are set to embark on a week-long adventure, as they gear up to participate in this year&#8217;s <strong>Mirnawan Cup<\/strong>, which takes place in <strong>Malaysia<\/strong> from 18 to 26 November.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Northwood&#8217;s Justin Collins<\/strong> will coach the boys&#8217; team, while <strong>Waterkloof&#8217;s Omari Pienaar-Geyer<\/strong> has been entrusted with leading the 18-player squad in the girls&#8217; section.<\/p>\n<p>They will face stern opposition during the week-long tournament, with the likes of <strong>India<\/strong>, <strong>Australia<\/strong>, Malaysia, and <strong>Japan<\/strong> looking to down the South Africans.<\/p>\n<p><strong><em>In case you missed it, READ<\/em><\/strong><em>: <a href=\"https:\/\/hockey.supersportschools.com\/international-exposure-on-the-cards-as-sa-u17s-fly-to-malaysia\/\">Exclusive interview with the girl\u2019s coach: Omari Pienaar-Geyer<\/a> <\/em><\/p>\n<p>The SA teams will, however, be banking on the experienced players they have in their respective arsenals. Their captains, <strong>Ruben Sendzul<\/strong> (boys), and <strong>Tanya Pieterse<\/strong> (girls) will also have massive roles to play in leading their teams on and off the field.<\/p>\n<p>The girls&#8217; team will kick off their campaign against <strong>Japan<\/strong> on <strong>Sunday, 19 November at 15:00<\/strong>, while Sendzul\u2019s troops will be in action a day later against <strong>Australia at 10:00<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>Speaking ahead of the tournament, the two skippers expressed how excited their respective teams were for the momentous occasion.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;This will be my first international tournament playing other countries,&#8221; said Pieterse via <strong>South African Schools Hockey (SASHOC)<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I think the tournament will produce top-class hockey, and I\u2019m just excited to make memories.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The goal is to make memories and take in every moment. I think the tournament will also help the team become closer, make friends for a lifetime, learn, and return to South Africa as better players,&#8221; she added.<\/p>\n<p>For Sendzul, it&#8217;s clear, his side will need to be sharp from day one, if they hope to pose any threats against the world&#8217;s best.<\/p>\n<p>Led by the experienced Collins, the side features players from top schools like <strong>Hilton College<\/strong>, <strong>SACS<\/strong>, <strong>Paul Roos<\/strong>, and <strong>Durban High School (DHS)<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>They will also be eager to kick off their campaign on a high against the Aussies.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;What I&#8217;m most excited about is travelling to Malaysia and travelling with the team and representing my country on the international stage in test matches,&#8221; Sendzul said.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We are South Africa.
