{"id":32942,"date":"2024-01-18T14:25:22","date_gmt":"2024-01-18T12:25:22","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/ssschoolsplus.co.za\/?p=32942"},"modified":"2024-01-18T14:25:22","modified_gmt":"2024-01-18T12:25:22","slug":"basketball-sa-to-host-u16-national-championship","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/test.ssschoolsplus.co.za\/?p=32942","title":{"rendered":"Basketball SA to host u16 National Championship"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft wp-image-32951 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/test.ssschoolsplus.co.za\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/01\/basketball-dhs-college-180124-1-400x382.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"400\" height=\"382\" \/>After hosting a successful <strong>u18 Interprovincial Basketball tournament<\/strong> in 2023, <strong>Basketball South Africa<\/strong> is preparing to host an <strong>u16 National Championships<\/strong>, which will be played in Durban from 24-29 March.<\/p>\n<p>It marks an important step forward for the game in South Africa.<\/p>\n<p>When the u18 inter-provincial tournament was held in July 2023 in Bloemfontein, Gauteng dominated the girls&#8217; and boys&#8217; competitions.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It was, however, a back-and-forth battle for the girls&#8217; title between the <strong>Western Cape<\/strong> and <strong>Gauteng. <\/strong>The Capetonians came close to pulling off a victory, scoring 61 points, but they came up just five points shy of Gauteng, who came away with a 66-61 victory.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Another epic battle was fought for the boys&#8217; title between <strong>Gauteng<\/strong> and <strong>KwaZulu-Natal<\/strong>. Both teams brought it, producing 148 points between them, but it was Gauteng who edged the result, winning 76-72.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Those u18 National Championships were a turning point for Basketball SA, which had last hosted an u18 inter-provincial tournament in 2014.<\/p>\n<p>It has taken time to rebuild the sport since then, primarily due to Basketball SA facing funding issues. However, support from the <strong>South African Sports Confederation and Olympic Committee (Sascoc),<\/strong> through allocations from the <strong>Department of Sports, Art and Culture,<\/strong> has ensured the return of the u18 event and the introduction of the u16 National Championship.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>After hosting a successful u18 Interprovincial Basketball tournament in 2023, Basketball South Africa is preparing to host an u16 National Championships, which will be played in Durban from 24-29 March.
