Wynberg Boys’ High <\/strong>delivered a masterclass on Saturday to topple their rivals and cricketing powerhouse, Rondebosch Boys’ High<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Captain Beni Hansen<\/strong> led from the front to give the visitors a platform from which to launch their attack. Hansen, also the SA Schools’ captain in 2023, delivered a much-need boost to the Wynberg innings after they had lost their openers early on.<\/p>\n

It was, however, Xavier Garvs<\/strong> who caused the most problems for the ‘Bosch bowlers, picking them apart to add 112 runs to the Wynberg total.<\/p>\n

Hlumelo Mgweba<\/strong> had some success for the home team, taking three wickets, including that of the Wynberg captain, but Garvs took the sting out of the attack, and the home side’s bowlers were unable to impose themselves, as they usually do.<\/p>\n

Rondebosch were frustrated further at the end of the Wynberg innings as Luke Kleinsmith<\/strong> hung around for 71 deliveries and added 29 more runs to carry Wynberg to 252\/8 as they saw out 70 overs.<\/p>\n

Nathan Ball<\/strong> launched a counteroffensive for the hosts, but he could only watch on helplessly as the rest of the Rondebosch batting lineup crumbled in the face of the Wynberg onslaught.<\/p>\n

Ball carved out 52 runs from 88 deliveries before Paul James<\/strong> sent him packing, which brought an end to the Rondebosch innings after James and his teammates had sliced through the home team’s batting.<\/p>\n

Ebrahim Fakir<\/strong> spearheaded the Wynberg efforts, dismissing three batsmen for a mere 16 runs, which helped Wynberg end Rondebosch’s stuttering chase still 130 runs shy of their target.<\/p>\n

The emphatic victory will be a massive boost of confidence for Wynberg ahead of a clash with the touring Wellington<\/strong> College<\/strong> (UK) team, which precedes a Saturday showdown with Affies<\/strong> on the Jacques Kallis Oval<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Rondebosch also faces the UK tourists during the week. They, then, turn down the intensity for an inter-house six-a-side tournament before the 1st XI faces a stiff examination from Affies on Sunday.<\/p>\n

Ho\u00ebrskool Durbanville<\/strong> also bested their local rivals, with Jan Kriel’<\/strong>s brisk 82 runs off 66 deliveries, and further useful contributions from Pierre du Toit<\/strong> (48) and Divan Bosman<\/strong> (42), taking them to a win over Curro Durbanville.<\/strong><\/p>\n

There was still a lot of work to do when Xander van Aarde<\/strong> (27*) stepped to the crease as the Durbies’ eighth batsman, though.<\/p>\n

He showed his class, patiently knocking off the required runs before putting an exclamation point on his team’s victory with a six to seal it.<\/p>\n

Meanwhile, Bishops Diocesan College <\/strong>and\u00a0SACS<\/strong> ended all square after 120 overs of ferocious battle.<\/p>\n

At the start, Litha Kraai<\/strong> wreaked havoc among the Bishops’ batsmen, taking three early wickets to rattle the visitors, who found themselves in trouble on 16\/3.<\/p>\n

Thaafier Japhta<\/strong> (40) did well to stabilise the Bishops’ innings and provide a platform for his side in the face of a relentless bowling attack. Then Sam Stavely-Alexander (43) and Waco Bassick<\/strong> (79) combined to drive their team into the ascendancy.<\/p>\n

Nicholas Oscroft<\/strong> finally removed Stavely-Alexander, but Peyton Leigh<\/strong>, the next man in, continued to pile more pressure on the hosts with an undefeated 41 runs.<\/p>\n

When SACS batted, Bassick and Leigh made further contributions, this time sharing six wickets between them, as SACS made it to 180, but the game had slowed to a crawl by then, with 55 overs bowled.<\/p>\n

Though Bishops will be disappointed to have not added another victory to their record, their unbeaten streak in their 175th anniversary year continues.<\/p>\n

They have two midweek matches against UK opposition on their schedule, taking on Charterhouse<\/strong> and Wellington College, before they visit Stellenbosch to face a wounded Paul Roos Gimnasium <\/strong>on Saturday.<\/p>\n
