{"id":35731,"date":"2024-02-23T20:55:27","date_gmt":"2024-02-23T18:55:27","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/ssschoolsplus.co.za\/?p=35731"},"modified":"2024-02-23T20:55:27","modified_gmt":"2024-02-23T18:55:27","slug":"only-two-remain-unbeaten-at-old-petrians-water-polo-tournament","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/test.ssschoolsplus.co.za\/?p=35731","title":{"rendered":"Only two remain unbeaten at Old Petrian&#8217;s Water Polo Tournament"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-35738\" src=\"https:\/\/test.ssschoolsplus.co.za\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/02\/water-polo-petrians-230224-400x248.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"400\" height=\"248\" \/>There were fewer blowouts and matches were more tightly contested on the second day of the 19th edition of the <\/span><b>Old Petrian&#8217;s U19 Girls Water Polo Tournament<\/b>, being <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">hosted by <\/span><b>St Peter&#8217;s College.<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> The event, which kicked off on Thursday, finishes on Sunday.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Several teams, who were buried under waves of double-digit margins of defeat, regrouped and worked their way back into the tournament. Only five teams &#8211; <\/span><b>Rand Park, Springfield, Pretoria Girls, Wynberg and Reddam Helderfontein <\/b>&#8211;<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> are yet to register a first win in the 27-team event.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The big guns who made a splash on day one continued to build on those results.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Coach <\/span><b>Alex Hawkins<\/b>&#8216; <b>Herschel<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, which boasts several <\/span><b>Western Province <\/b>u16<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and u19 stars, including <\/span><b>Kirsten Bottger<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and <\/span><b>Anna Lieberman<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, swept the group with little trouble. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Pool A, which also has powerhouses <\/span><b>St Stithians<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and <\/span><b>Crawford <\/b>in its ranks<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, is one of the toughest groups at the tournament. Herschel, the 2011 champions, were not unnerved by the reputations of the teams in their group, however, and they kept a clean record on their way to the top of the standings.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">They prevailed 8-5 over the defending champions, St Stithians, in a tightly contested encounter, before trouncing <\/span><b>Crawford <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and <\/span><b>Alexander Road<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> by double digits. The Western Cape outfit is a perfect six from six so far. They&#8217;re also six points clear of second-placed St Stithians, who have one game in hand.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Roedean <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">is the only other undefeated team at the tournament. The Gauteng school has scored a mammoth 66 goals and conceded a miserly 13 on their way to the top of Pool B. The <\/span><b>Garreth Prout<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">-coached unit has followed the lead of their top scorer, SA Schools&#8217; star <\/span><b>Mia Loizides<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Right now, Roedean looks like the team to beat.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Pool C has three big guns tied on 12 points each. <\/span>Coach <b>Nick Tinkler<\/b>&#8216;s <b>Reddam Constantia<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> leads the three-team pack because of a superior goal difference over <\/span><b>St Dominic&#8217;s<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and <\/span><b>Durban Girls College<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. The <\/span><b>Hannah Banks<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">-led unit dropped points when they faced off against St. Dominic&#8217;s, who beat them by four goals to two.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Gauteng Central u19A <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">star <\/span><b>Ruby Carlson <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">was among the scorers for St Dominic&#8217;s, adding one more goal to her tally of seven from day one. She was key in St Dominic&#8217;s two victories over <\/span><b>Collegiate<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and <\/span><b>Pretoria Girls<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Kayla Andrews&#8217; <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">sensational form for DGC spilt into day two of the tournament. The KwaZulu-Natal sharpshooter scored five against Pretoria Girls and added two more to her tally when DGC breezed past the in-form St Dominic&#8217;s. Before falling to DGC, <\/span><b>Coach Wade Marshall<\/b>&#8216;s<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> team had been undefeated.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Reddam Bedfordview <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">leads Pool D after an impressive showing that saw them win three of their four group matches to end day two on 15 points. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Johannesburg outfit is not blowing teams out of the water, but they&#8217;re doing enough to secure victory. In their three games on Friday, they scored 14 goals and conceded four. However, their position at the summit is not secure. <\/span><b>Clarendon<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and <\/span><b>St Anne&#8217;s<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> are hot on their heels.
