{"id":35814,"date":"2024-02-25T07:42:47","date_gmt":"2024-02-25T05:42:47","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/ssschoolsplus.co.za\/?p=35814"},"modified":"2024-02-25T07:42:47","modified_gmt":"2024-02-25T05:42:47","slug":"its-championship-sunday-at-the-st-johns-college-basketball-tournament","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/test.ssschoolsplus.co.za\/?p=35814","title":{"rendered":"It&#8217;s Championship Sunday at the St John&#8217;s College Basketball Tournament!"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-35855\" src=\"https:\/\/test.ssschoolsplus.co.za\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/02\/basketball-st-charles-michaelhouse-250224-332x500.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"332\" height=\"500\" \/>The stakes are at their peak at the <strong>St John&#8217;s Basketball College Tournament, <\/strong>with titles on the line on Sunday.<\/p>\n<p>On Saturday, during the playoffs, the level of intensity was ratcheted up as the event proved, once again, why it is recognised as the most prestigious schools&#8217; basketball tournament in Southern Africa.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Defending champions into the semi-finals<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The defending champions, <strong>St Charles College,<\/strong> are eyeing back-to-back titles after setting up a semi-final showdown with <strong>King Edward VII School <\/strong>(KES).<\/p>\n<p>The Johannesburg locals look primed for the clash after beating ESCA Wanderers 57-40 in the last eight, with a combination of good teamwork and individual brilliance.<\/p>\n<p>It has been a relatively untroubled trip for KES, on their way to the semis, but Saints won&#8217;t be surrendering their title without a massive fight.<\/p>\n<p>St Charles accounted for their KZN rivals, Michaelhouse, beating them 64-49 to secure a final four spot. That victory followed a hard-fought 57-45 win over St David&#8217;s Marist Inanda in the top 16.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Northwood to face St Albans in the final four<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Northwood School<\/strong> remains unbeaten in this year&#8217;s tournament, although they had an all-too-close 39-36 win over <strong>Pretoria Boys High<\/strong> in the top 16. That was merely a scene-setter for an incredible showing against their close rivals, <strong>Maritzburg College,<\/strong> who recently defeated them in the final of the 2nd edition of the <a href=\"https:\/\/test.ssschoolsplus.co.za\/maritzburg-college-edge-out-northwood-in-jenny-orchard-overtime-thriller\/\">Jenny Orchard Basketball Tournamen<\/a>t in Pietermaritzburg.<\/p>\n<p>This time around, there was only one team in it as the Knights swept College aside by a shocking 80-41 margin to grab a semi-final spot. They play as a unit, take care of the ball, move it swiftly, and they&#8217;re blessed with players that can both dribble and shoot. They&#8217;re also backed up by an incredible fan base, which is hard to ignore. St Alban&#8217;s brings team spirit in bucketloads.<\/p>\n<p>Their semi-final against Northwood brings together two unbeaten sides, both undoubtedly with the ability to go all the way. For many, the winners of this clash will be the favourites to lift the title.<\/p>\n<p><strong>St John&#8217;s College u15 to the Final\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The <strong>St John&#8217;s College&#8217;s<\/strong> <strong>first team<\/strong> lost out to Maritzburg College in the last 16, but the <strong>St John&#8217;s<\/strong> u15s progressed to the semi-finals on Saturday, setting themselves up for a tilt at <strong>Michael Mount<\/strong>, with a place in the final the prize for the winners.<\/p>\n<p>St John&#8217;s and <strong>St Stithians College<\/strong> met in the quarterfinals in a very evenly contested match, with the tigerish defences of both sides standing out.
