{"id":35827,"date":"2024-02-24T21:24:16","date_gmt":"2024-02-24T19:24:16","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/ssschoolsplus.co.za\/?p=35827"},"modified":"2024-02-24T21:24:16","modified_gmt":"2024-02-24T19:24:16","slug":"semi-finalists-decided-as-old-petrians-heats-up-for-sundays-final","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/test.ssschoolsplus.co.za\/?p=35827","title":{"rendered":"Semi-finalists decided as Old Petrian&#8217;s heats up for Sunday&#8217;s final"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft wp-image-35835 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/test.ssschoolsplus.co.za\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/02\/water-polo-240224-400x245.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"400\" height=\"245\" \/>The competition shifted into a higher gear on Saturday, delivering closer contests, as the top four teams booked their semi-final spots on the third day of the <\/span><b>Old Petrian&#8217;s U19 Girls Water Polo Tournament.<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The event, being hosted by <\/span><b>St Peter&#8217;s Girls Prep School<\/b>, in Johannesburg<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, has 27 schools participating. It began on Thursday, and it concludes on Sunday, with the <\/span><b>Wahoo Aquatic Centre <\/b>hosting the final at 15:40<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>St Stithians, Diocesan School for Girls (DSG)<\/b>, <b>Herschel<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and <\/span><b>Reddam House Constantia<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> will battle it out for a place in the title-decider.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">St Stithians was the first team to secure a final four place after they edged out <\/span><b>Roedean <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">in a closely contested encounter. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The defending champions took a longer route to get there, unlike Roedean, who did not have to go the route of a playoff match to reach the quarterfinals. To get there, Saints had to come through a playoff game against <strong>Clarendon. <\/strong>There handled the challenge well, winning 6-3, to book a place against Pool B winners, Roedean, in the last eight.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>In the quarterfinal clash, <b>Cadha Mosehla <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and <\/span><b>Courtney Calenborne<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> netted two goals each to lead St Stithians to another final four appearance at Old Petrian&#8217;s after a narrow 6-5 win.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Coach Julia Gaybba&#8217;s <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">DSG finished second in Pool B, three points behind table topping Roedean. That placed them in the path of a red-hot <\/span><b>St Dominic&#8217;s Catholic School for Girls<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, one of the three teams that finished on 15 points in Pool C. But the <\/span><b>Grahamstown <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">girls were not focused on the past, they were focused on what was before them and they eased past St Dominic&#8217;s 5-1.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">With that job down, they trained their eyes on the next prize, a semi-final spot. The opposition was tougher, but not too tough for them to overcome. <\/span><b>Nelson Mandela Bay u19 <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">star <\/span><b>Amelia Brown<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> led the way with a brace as DSG overcame <\/span><b>St Anne&#8217;s<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> by a 6-4 margin.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, <b>Kayla Andrews <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and <\/span><b>Inga Southey<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> played their hearts out, scoring hat-tricks for <\/span><b>Durban Girls&#8217; College (DGC) <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">in their quarter-final clash against Herschel. DGC came into the contest on the back of an impressive showing against <\/span><b>St Mary&#8217;s,<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> where Andrews scored another hat-trick and Southey came through with a brace, to secure a 6-3 win. However, Herschel proved to be a tougher opponent.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The <\/span><b>Alex Hawkins<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">-coached team showed that they had not topped Pool A &#8211; which included the two most recent champions, Saints and <\/span><b>Crawford <\/b>&#8211;<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0through a stroke of luck. Herschel outplayed them.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> In their quarter-final encounter against DGC, they put together a solid team performance that saw eight scorers combine to secure an 11-8 win. Herschel was led by <\/span><b>Emily Van Heerden,<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> who scored a hat-trick.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Hannah Banks <\/b>then <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">rounded off a day filled with outstanding performances by leading five-time champions <\/span><b>Reddam Constantia<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to the semi-finals. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In the group stages of the tournament, Reddam lost a single game on their way to first place in Pool C. They were tied on 15 points with DGC and St Dominic&#8217;s but enjoyed a superior goal difference after netting 63 times while conceding only eight goals in six matches.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Most of those goals came from the hands of Banks. The <\/span><b>Western Province <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">star is one of the top three scorers of the tournament.
