{"id":35934,"date":"2024-02-26T10:51:22","date_gmt":"2024-02-26T08:51:22","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/ssschoolsplus.co.za\/?p=35934"},"modified":"2024-02-26T10:51:22","modified_gmt":"2024-02-26T08:51:22","slug":"northwood-unstoppable-crowned-st-johns-basketball-tournament-champions","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/test.ssschoolsplus.co.za\/?p=35934","title":{"rendered":"Northwood unstoppable, crowned St John&#8217;s Basketball Tournament champions"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft wp-image-35989 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/test.ssschoolsplus.co.za\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/02\/basketball-northwood-st-johns-260224-1-400x256.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"400\" height=\"256\" \/>Northwood&#8217;s basketball team<\/strong> has come a long way and Sunday&#8217;s victory was testament to the long hard hours of commitment, dedication and hard work, which brought the Knights the title in the <strong>19th edition of the St John&#8217;s Basketball Tournament<\/strong> after an unbeaten run through the event.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Northwood&#8217;s Director of Basketball, Doug Nedab,<\/strong> and the first team <strong>coach, Kent VanderYacht,<\/strong> could not contain their excitement after their side thumped<strong> King Edward VII School<\/strong> in the gold medal match.<\/p>\n<p>It was a one-sided title game as Northwood seized control early on and didn&#8217;t let up. By the second quarter, it was clear they were on their way to being crowned champions. At half-time, they led 49-19. At the end, they had recorded a runaway 85-43 win.<\/p>\n<p>Nedab told <strong>SuperSport Schools Plus <\/strong>he has witnessed the work that has been put in by the players since his arrival at Northwood. &#8220;They deserve this moment, especially after last week losing out to <strong>Maritzburg College<\/strong> in the final of the Jenny Orchard Basketball Tournament,&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n<p>Northwood avenged that setback when they overwhelmed College in the St John&#8217;s quarterfinals, scoring an extraordinary 80-41 win.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_35990\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-35990\" style=\"width: 400px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-35990\" src=\"https:\/\/test.ssschoolsplus.co.za\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/02\/basketball-northwood-college-260224-1-400x414.jpg\" alt=\"Lusanda Hlongwane was a problem KES couldn't solve in the final of the St John's College Basketball Tournament. Photo: ActionPix.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&#8220;I can tell the ups and downs we have had since then,&#8221; Nedab said, &#8220;and at this tournament, the guys didn&#8217;t play like themselves until the quarterfinals, so I&#8217;m proud of this outcome.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Nedab reserved special praise for <strong>Lusanda Hlongwane,<\/strong> who was named the <strong>MVP of the Tournament<\/strong>, and <strong>Chadley Hargreaves<\/strong>, who also made the <strong>u19 All-Star Team. <\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Nedab <\/strong>also lauded the performances of <strong>Siyamthanda Shabalala<\/strong>. &#8220;Siyamthanda Shabalala, remember the name. He will be the number one player in the country within two years,&#8221; Nedab reckoned.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Hilton College wins the u15 St John&#8217;s Championship<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Another KwaZulu-Natal school got their hands on the u15 trophy, with <strong>Hilton College defeating St John&#8217;s College <\/strong>to lift the title.<\/p>\n<p>The first two quarters of the championship game were a real battle, with St John&#8217;s just holding off their opponents.
