{"id":36108,"date":"2024-02-28T15:21:48","date_gmt":"2024-02-28T13:21:48","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/ssschoolsplus.co.za\/?p=36108"},"modified":"2024-02-28T15:21:48","modified_gmt":"2024-02-28T13:21:48","slug":"michaelhouse-st-davids-raring-to-go-at-reef-cup","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/test.ssschoolsplus.co.za\/?p=36108","title":{"rendered":"Michaelhouse, St David&#8217;s raring to go at Reef Cup"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-36117\" src=\"https:\/\/test.ssschoolsplus.co.za\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/02\/water-polo-kearsney-sandri-270224-400x231.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"400\" height=\"231\" \/>All roads lead to <\/span><b>St Stithians College, <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">where 20 schools will make up the boys&#8217; side of the competition at the <strong>2024<\/strong> <\/span><b>Reef Cup Water Polo Tournament.<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> First played back in 1980, it is one of the longest-running water polo tournaments in Gauteng. This year&#8217;s competition takes place from Thursday, 29 February, to Sunday, 3 March.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">One of the teams making the trek to Saints is <\/span><b>Michaelhouse<\/b>, who made it all the way to the semi-finals last year.<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> They won six of their seven games before going down to <\/span><b>St David\u2019s Marist Inanda <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">in the final four.<\/span><\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Their team this year looks quite different. <\/span><b>Coach Graeme Lucas-Bull<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> leads a relatively young side, which features only two boys in matric, four Grade 11s and seven Grade 10s. Whatever the side may lack in experience, it makes up for that for with character, skill and enthusiasm.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It\u2019s not only the personnel in the water that are different. Their coach, Lucas-Bull, took the reins this year, but he is not new to the trade. He comes with a wealth of experience and a very impressive CV. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">He was the <\/span><b>St Andrew&#8217;s College <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">coach and Director of Water Polo, and has also coached St Stithians, <\/span><b>Reddam House Constantia, Western Province, Nelson Mandela Bay, Gauteng,<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> the <\/span><b>National u17 <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">side, the <\/span><b>SA Schools <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">girls&#8217; team, and he served as an assistant coach to the <strong>SA Men<\/strong>&#8216;s team.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Apart from the changes in personnel, there has been a shift in the culture, too, Lucas-Bull explained. &#8220;Michaelhouse is not known as a water polo powerhouse and we want to change that.&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> He told <\/span><b>Supersport Schools Plus<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that his primary concern is to help the players grow as individuals. For him, the pool is a classroom where the players learn life skills that allow them to develop good character and resilience.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">At the <\/span><b>St Andrew\u2019s Shield<\/b>, at the end of January, playing against some of South Africa&#8217;s elite teams, <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Michaelhouse played themselves into strong positions but struggled to close out games. In one of their matches, they led for three chukkas only to lose by a single goal at the end of the fourth chukka. In another game, they were edged out after a penalty shootout. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">At the Reef Cup, the <\/span><b>Luke Davidson-<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">captained team will aim to be more ruthless and accurate, and to play with greater intensity.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">According to Lucas-Bull, each team Michaelhouse competes against is in for a fair but tough contest, and one of those teams is going to be last year&#8217;s beaten finalists, St David&#8217;s Marist Inanda.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> The <\/span><b>Dean Whyte<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">-coached unit is returning to the Reef Cup intent on finishing a job they just missed out on completing last year. &#8220;I think the team always wants to strive for perfection. It was their efforts that got them that far. I certainly think the boys are ready and wanting to go, more so go one further,&#8221; Whyte said.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Unlike Michaelhouse, St David\u2019s boasts an experienced side. Almost half of the 2024 team played at the Reef Cup in 2023. They lost five senior players, who matriculated at the end of last year, and will be missing a handful of players who are out of action due to injuries. However, they bring a strong squad into the event, and their tournament experience is not limited to the Reef Cup.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8220;I&#8217;m very blessed at St David&#8217;s to have many high performing players, who have played at the provincial level, so their experience extends past our pool,&#8221; Whyte said. &#8220;And we all know that having experience in a pool certainly adds benefits. This year our team has had every player play at a provincial level at some stage.&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">St David\u2019s will dive into the pool with their coach&#8217;s motto ringing in their ears, &#8220;Play with heart and pride &#8211; for yourself, and your team.&#8221; They will be out to have fun and compete, a combination that could help them take that one step further to lift the coveted trophy.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Other teams to look out for at the Reef Cup are a resurgent <\/span><b>Affies, <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">who finished second at the <\/span><b>Grey College ITEC<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> tournament, losing out to <strong>S<\/strong><\/span><b>elborne College <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">in the final, earlier this season. They reached the quarterfinals at last year\u2019s edition of the Reef Cup. <\/span><b>St Alban\u2019s,<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> who lost to Michaelhouse in the battle for third place in 2023, will be out for redemption, with designs on going all the way.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>If there is a dark horse side, it could be <strong>Kearsney College<\/strong>.
