{"id":36250,"date":"2024-03-01T07:41:57","date_gmt":"2024-03-01T05:41:57","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/ssschoolsplus.co.za\/?p=36250"},"modified":"2024-03-01T07:41:57","modified_gmt":"2024-03-01T05:41:57","slug":"saints-imperious-as-defence-of-reef-cup-begins","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/test.ssschoolsplus.co.za\/?p=36250","title":{"rendered":"Saints imperious as defence of Reef Cup begins"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-36254\" src=\"https:\/\/test.ssschoolsplus.co.za\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/03\/water-polo-st-stithians-010324-400x279.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"400\" height=\"279\" \/>The hosts, <strong>St Stithians College<\/strong>, opened their challenge at the annual <strong>Reef Cup Water Polo Invitational<\/strong> tournament with two convincing victories on Thursday.<\/p>\n<p>The defending champions beat <strong>Falcon College<\/strong> 16-0 in their opening match in the morning, and then thumped <strong>Afrikaanse Ho\u00ebr Meisieskool<\/strong> 20-3 in the afternoon, to send out a strong message to their opponents; they&#8217;re intent on sending their coach <a href=\"https:\/\/test.ssschoolsplus.co.za\/a-bittersweet-ending-as-le-roux-prepares-to-bid-farewell-to-saints\/\"><strong>Etienne le Roux<\/strong><\/a> out on a high.<\/p>\n<p>Against Affies, Saints were on fire from the opening whistle, scoring eight times in the first chukka, and early in the second chukka they made it nine, while the visitors had mustered only one goal in reply.<\/p>\n<p>Affies battled hard but they were simply outplayed as St Stithians ran away to a 20\u20133 win.<\/p>\n<p>Earlier, in the first match of the day, Harare&#8217;s <strong>Hellenic Academy<\/strong> defeated <strong>Parktown High School for Girls<\/strong> 13\u20134. <strong>Reddam House Bedfordview<\/strong> saw off <strong>Steyn City School<\/strong> 9\u20133 and <strong>Kingsmead College<\/strong> also made it into the winning column with a 6-2 victory over <strong>Beaulieu College<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>Roedean made a light work of <strong>Pretoria High School for Girls<\/strong> when they overran them 23\u20132. The Johannesburg girls received strong performances from <strong>Mia Loizides<\/strong>, <strong>Ziyanda Tshabalala<\/strong> and <strong>Taylor Billett<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>It didn&#8217;t take long for them to secure a solid lead. In the first chukka they went six goals clear, netting six times while Pretoria remained goalless. By the end of the third chukka, they had stretched their advantage to 17-2.<\/p>\n<p>There were a number of other one-sided results, with <strong>St Peter&#8217;s College<\/strong> handing <strong>Afrikaanse Ho\u00ebr Meisieskool<\/strong> a 21\u20131 loss and <strong>St Dominic&#8217;s Catholic School for Girls<\/strong> powering their way to an 18\u20131 win over <strong>Woodridge College<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The second round of action splashes off at 07:50 on Friday with the <strong>Tournament Invitation Team<\/strong> taking on Pretoria High School for Girls in the Olympic South pool.
