Paarl Gimnasium<\/strong>, South African College High School<\/strong> (SACS) and Wynberg Boys High<\/strong> all racked up impressive wins on the opening weekend of the inter-schools’ season in the Western Cape on Friday night.<\/p>\n

Gim and Wynberg scored five goals each against Outeniqua<\/strong> and Curro Durbanville<\/strong> respectively. SACS, meanwhile, topped that, netting six goals against Fairmont High School<\/strong>, away from home.<\/p>\n

Entering their clash against Outeniqua, Gim, led by coach Jacques Grobler,<\/strong> was high in confidence after winning the Belgotex Sport Easter Hockey Tournament<\/strong> <\/a>the week before by defeating Worcester Gimnasium<\/strong> 2-1 in the final. It was their third title on the trot in the event.<\/p>\n

They came off their blocks fast against Outeniqua, with Willem Matthee <\/strong>getting them on the board.<\/p>\n

Gim’s skipper, LD Nel<\/strong>, who was recognised as one of the standout players at the Belgotex Tournament, where he topped the goal scorers’ charts, continued his prolific goalscoring form, slotting a hattrick, before Neil de Wet’<\/strong>s solitary goal sealed a 5-1 win for the Paarl side.<\/p>\n

Coach Grobler’s charges will take their talents further afield over the course of the next two weekends, first facing Affies<\/strong> in Pretoria, before travelling to Bloemfontein to take on Grey College<\/strong> the week after that.<\/p>\n

SACS<\/strong> were expected to beat Fairmont High School and they duly delivered, knocking in six goals to add another convincing win to an ever-expanding list of impressive one-sided victories.<\/p>\n

Right-wing Matthew Jones<\/strong> scored a brace while Nick Paxton<\/strong>, Matthew Lassen<\/strong>, Aiden Hughes<\/strong>, and the dangerous Litha Kraai <\/strong>also got their names onto the scoresheet.<\/p>\n

Coach Sam Holmes<\/strong> will now prepare his side for their next assignment, which is Parel Vallei<\/strong> next weekend at home.<\/p>\n

Wynberg<\/strong>, under coach Ben Wiley<\/strong>,\u00a0got their Western Cape season off to a confidence-boosting 5-1 win over Curro Durbanville.<\/p>\n

They dominated ball possession and the match. Dayle Gertson<\/strong> was instrumental in Wynberg’s win, scoring four times, before Ethan Lee <\/strong>made it five in total for the southern suburbs’ side.<\/strong><\/p>\n

In other matches, Worcester Gimnasium also claimed a win, handing Swartland a 0-2 loss, with Lourens de Kock<\/strong> and Christiaan Joubert <\/strong>scoring.<\/p>\n

Stellenberg High<\/strong> came close to pulling off an upset when they held Rondebosch Boys’ High<\/strong> to a 2-2 draw.<\/p>\n

Playing at home, Stellenberg drew strength from the enthusiastic backing of their home crowd. Their goals were netted by Ben Marais<\/strong> and Dean Potgieter<\/strong>, while Martin Barnard<\/strong> and Jamie Hundermark<\/strong> hit the mark for Rondebosch.<\/p>\n

DF Malan<\/strong> and Parel Vallei shared a 1-1 draw, with Sibulele Makeleni<\/strong> striking for Parel Vallei and Adriaan Steytler<\/strong> scoring for DF.<\/p>\n

Brackenfell<\/strong> narrowly missed out on a win against the Wynberg Invitational team, going down 2-3, while HTS Drostdy<\/strong>\u00a0did just enough to defeat Hugenote<\/strong> 1-0.<\/p>\n
