{"id":40767,"date":"2024-04-08T09:25:59","date_gmt":"2024-04-08T07:25:59","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/ssschoolsplus.co.za\/?p=40767"},"modified":"2024-04-08T09:25:59","modified_gmt":"2024-04-08T07:25:59","slug":"back-and-forth-battles-on-gautengs-turfs","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/test.ssschoolsplus.co.za\/?p=40767","title":{"rendered":"Back-and-forth battles on Gauteng&#8217;s turfs"},"content":{"rendered":"<figure id=\"attachment_40769\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-40769\" style=\"width: 400px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-40769\" src=\"https:\/\/test.ssschoolsplus.co.za\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/04\/PTA-Boys-vs-St-Albans-400x400.jpg\" alt=\"Photo: Arno Schutte\" width=\"400\" height=\"400\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-40769\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Photo: Arno Schutte<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The Gauteng inter-schools&#8217; hockey season got off to a sizzling start over the weekend, with 28 goals scored in eight matches.<\/p>\n<p>The action started on Friday night, when<strong> Ho\u00ebrskool Waterkloof<\/strong>, <strong>Pretoria Boys High<\/strong>, and <strong>Jeppe High <\/strong>registered wins against <strong>Transvalia<\/strong>, <strong>St Alban&#8217;s College<\/strong>, and <strong>St Stithians College<\/strong> respectively.<\/p>\n<p>Waterkloof edged Transvalia 3-2 in a tightly contested clash in Pretoria.<\/p>\n<p>After trailing for most of the first chukka, Klofies showed composure and got themselves back into the match courtesy of a <strong>Jordan Abbott<\/strong> strike.<\/p>\n<p>They doubled their tally in the second chukka through <strong>Xander Kleynhans<\/strong> and went into half-time leading 2-1.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Adriaan Botha<\/strong> quickly made it three in the third chukka, and despite Transvalia\u2019s never-say-die attitude, <strong>coach Mark Lamprecht&#8217;<\/strong>s side held on for the win.<\/p>\n<p>Pretoria Boys High will also be happy with their performance after grinding out a 2-1 win against their old foes, St Alban&#8217;s.<\/p>\n<p>Backed by their vibrant home supporters, coach <strong>Jacques Klopper&#8217;<\/strong>s team was made to work hard for the win, but <strong>Marco Upton<\/strong> netted twice to seal the victory for his side. The St Alban&#8217;s goal was scored by <strong>Liam Basch<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>In Kensington, on the Boden Astroturf, <strong>Jeppe <\/strong>recorded a hard-fought 1-0 win over a tough <strong>St Stithians College<\/strong> team.<\/p>\n<p>Jeppe entered the clash on the back of mixed results at the <strong>Nomads Hockey Festival<\/strong> and the <strong>KES Easter Hockey Festival<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>On Saturday, they were solid at the back, keeping the team who beat them in the final of the Aitken Cup in 2023 off the scoreboard, while <strong>Juan Martin <\/strong>scored the all-important only goal of the contest.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_40768\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-40768\" style=\"width: 400px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-40768\" src=\"https:\/\/test.ssschoolsplus.co.za\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/04\/KES-v-Rondebosch-ayt-KES-400x267.jpg\" alt=\"Photo: King Edward VII\" width=\"400\" height=\"267\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-40768\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Photo: King Edward VII School<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The action moved on to Saturday, with the fixtures including a n exciting derby between neighbours, <strong>King Edward VII<\/strong> <strong>(KES)<\/strong> and <strong>St John&#8217;s College<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>As expected, it was a tough outing for both teams, with fortunes in the game ebbing and flowing. KES eventually pulled off a 3-2 win, with <strong>Michael Adamson<\/strong> netting twice, and<strong> Oyena Qwabe<\/strong> scoring their other goal.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Tapi Mutetwa<\/strong> and <strong>Dylan Viljoen<\/strong> scored for St John&#8217;s.<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, <strong>Parktown Boys&#8217; High<\/strong> dominated against <strong>Northcliff High School<\/strong>, winning 3-1, courtesy of a <strong>Robert Bailey<\/strong> brace and another from <strong>Ryan Venter<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>St Benedict&#8217;s College, under coach <strong>Owen Mvimbi<\/strong>, continued their fine form, edging out <strong>St David&#8217;s Marist Inanda<\/strong> 1-0.<\/p>\n<p>There was nothing to separate <strong>Garsfontein<\/strong> and <strong>Affies<\/strong>, who played to a 1-1 draw, with <strong>Zandr\u00e9\u00a0Nel<\/strong> getting on the scoresheet for Garsies and <strong>Christian Pullen<\/strong> scoring for Affies.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Beaulieu College<\/strong> was on song, beating <strong>St Peter&#8217;s College<\/strong> 4-1.<\/p>\n<p><strong>RESULTS<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Jeppe High 1-0 St Stithians College<br \/>\nPretoria Boys High 2-1 St Alban&#8217;s College<strong><br \/>\n<\/strong>Garsfontein 1-1 Affies<br \/>\nParktown Boys&#8217; High 3-1 Northcliff High<br \/>\nKing Edward VII 3-2 St John&#8217;s College<br \/>\nSt Benedict&#8217;s 1-0 St David&#8217;s Marist Inanda<br \/>\nHo\u00ebrskool Waterkloof 4-3 Transvalia<br \/>\nBeaulieu College 4-1 St Peter&#8217;s College<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The Gauteng inter-schools&#8217; hockey season got off to a sizzling start over the weekend, with 28 goals scored in eight matches.
