{"id":45010,"date":"2024-05-15T10:01:09","date_gmt":"2024-05-15T08:01:09","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/ssschoolsplus.co.za\/?p=45010"},"modified":"2024-05-15T10:01:09","modified_gmt":"2024-05-15T08:01:09","slug":"mental-strength-key-as-fairmont-hunts-a-win-at-rhenish","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/test.ssschoolsplus.co.za\/?p=45010","title":{"rendered":"Mental strength key as Fairmont hunts a win at Rhenish"},"content":{"rendered":"<figure id=\"attachment_45011\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-45011\" style=\"width: 400px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-45011\" src=\"https:\/\/test.ssschoolsplus.co.za\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/05\/Fairmont-vs-Durbanville-Girls-400x266.jpg\" alt=\"Photo credits: Colin Hadley \" width=\"400\" height=\"266\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-45011\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Photo credits: <strong>Colin Hadley<\/strong><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The <strong>Fairmont High School<\/strong> girls&#8217; hockey team will take a trip to Stellenbosch, intent on causing a major upset when they take on <strong>Rhenish Girls&#8217; High School<\/strong> in one of the big matches in the Western Cape this weekend.<\/p>\n<p>The first push-back on Rhenish&#8217;s main Astroturf is at 19:00 on Friday evening.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">Catch all the action <strong>LIVE<\/strong> on <a href=\"https:\/\/live.supersportschools.com\/events\/6643949eeebb94f58b3e8375\/\">SuperSport Schools<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Despite producing mixed results in recent weeks, <strong>Fairmont<\/strong> has impressed hockey enthusiasts with an attractive brand of hockey this season.<\/p>\n<p>The side, coached by <strong>Jarryd Curran<\/strong>, has punched above its weight, accruing a number of upset wins on its way to establishing itself as a serious threat to some of the big guns.<\/p>\n<p>They began their season at the <strong>York Easter Festival<\/strong>, where they thumped East London&#8217;s <strong>Cambridge High<\/strong> 4-0, before slotting a whopping nine goals against <strong>St Dominic&#8217;s<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>Their impressive run in George also included a 1-0 win over <strong>Outeniqua<\/strong>, a 2-2 draw with <strong>York High<\/strong>, and an emphatic 8-1 victory over <strong>Victoria Park <\/strong>in their last outing.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We had a very good pre-season with the group &#8211; loads of preseason fixtures and tournaments &#8211; and the girls started finding their feet but, all in all, it was good,&#8221; <strong>Curran<\/strong> told <strong>SuperSport Schools<\/strong>, ahead of his side&#8217;s showdown with Rhenish.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We haven\u2019t had the best start to the season in terms of the league. Photo credits: <strong>Belgotex Sports<\/strong><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&#8220;Yes, using tournaments as preparation was really good,&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;At Belgotex, we went unbeaten throughout but, unfortunately, fell short of the Cup semi-finals due to points in our group.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;But we remained focused on our goal and stayed unbeaten and won the Plate Section.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>More recently, Fairmont&#8217;s results have been mixed.\u00a0In their last four matches, they&#8217;ve won two, lost one, and played to a goalless draw against <strong>DF Malan<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>Their wins, against <strong>Stellenbosch High<\/strong>\u00a0and <strong>Westerford,<\/strong> were both by emphatic 5-0 margins.<\/p>\n<p>They did, however, go down 0-3 to <strong>Somerset College<\/strong>, the winners of the Belgotex Sport Easter Hockey Tournament, and coach Curran knows exactly what his charges need to work on, if they wish to avoid a similar outcome on Friday.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;It is never easy playing Rhenish, but it&#8217;s always good to test ourselves against a well-coached and driven team,&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;It will take a lot of mental strength to beat them. Not only are they physically dominant, but they are also very smart hockey players, so to get into the game we will just have to be smarter than them.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We will also have to be very disciplined and take our chances, and make sure we are ready for the battle.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The Stellenbosch side will be tough to beat. They&#8217;re enjoying a strong season under the guidance of head coach, <strong>Chris Gerber<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>Recently, at the <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/test.ssschoolsplus.co.za\/affies-wins-from-the-penalty-spot-vs-rhenish-to-clinch-all-girls-festival-title\/\">National All Girls Festival<\/a><\/strong>, they narrowly missed out on Gold, going 2-3 down to <strong>Affies Girls<\/strong> in a penalty shootout after regulation time had ended goalless.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Sienna Graser <\/strong>and her Fairmont team will be hard-pressed to stop the confident Rhenish girls in their own backyard.\u00a0Composure and experience are not lacking in the Fairmont side, however, with several players reaching first team milestones this year.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Camryn Corner<\/strong>, <strong>Madison Ackerman<\/strong> and <strong>Gabriella Grasso<\/strong> all received their 50th caps for the team earlier in the season.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Tatum O&#8217;Brien, Sarah Swanepoel<\/strong>, and <strong>Leah Buckley<\/strong> have also joined the 50-club, while Sienna Graser and <strong>Kaylin Bastard<\/strong> recorded their 100th caps for the Green Machine.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Other matches<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The weekend&#8217;s action gets underway at <strong>Worcester Gimnasium<\/strong>, who welcome <strong>Strand<\/strong> for their final match of the term.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Paarl Girls&#8217;<\/strong> High takes on <strong>La Rochelle<\/strong>, while <strong>Parel Vallei<\/strong> battles <strong>Somerset College<\/strong> in a big derby match.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Rustenburg Girls&#8217; High<\/strong> will host <strong>Springfield Convent School<\/strong>, and <strong>Herschel Girls School<\/strong> meets <strong>Stellenberg High School<\/strong> in a late game.<\/p>\n<p>On Saturday, <strong>Melkbosstrand<\/strong> faces <strong>Brackenfell<\/strong>, before a big clash between <strong>Paarl Gimnasium<\/strong> and <strong>HMS Bloemhof<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>FIXTURES<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Friday, 17 May<\/p>\n<p>15:00 &#8211; Worcester Gimnasium vs Strand<br \/>\n17:30 &#8211; Paarl Girls&#8217; High vs La Rochelle<br \/>\n18:20 &#8211; Parel Vallei vs Somerset College<br \/>\n18:30 &#8211; Rustenburg Girls&#8217; High vs Springfield Convent School<br \/>\n19:00 &#8211; Rhenish Girls&#8217; High vs Fairmont High School<br \/>\n19:05 &#8211; Herschel Girls School vs Stellenberg High<\/p>\n<p><strong>Saturday, 18 May\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>08:00 &#8211; Melkbosstrand vs Brackenfell<br \/>\n10:15 &#8211; Paarl Gimnasium vs HMS Bloemhof<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The Fairmont High School girls&#8217; hockey team will take a trip to Stellenbosch, intent on causing a major upset when they take on Rhenish Girls&#8217; High School in one of the big matches in the Western Cape this weekend.
