{"id":45091,"date":"2024-05-16T16:52:51","date_gmt":"2024-05-16T14:52:51","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/ssschoolsplus.co.za\/?p=45091"},"modified":"2024-05-16T16:52:51","modified_gmt":"2024-05-16T14:52:51","slug":"edendale-to-represent-sa-at-the-caf-african-schools-football-championships","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/test.ssschoolsplus.co.za\/?p=45091","title":{"rendered":"Edendale to represent SA at the CAF African Schools Football Championships"},"content":{"rendered":"<figure id=\"attachment_45098\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-45098\" style=\"width: 400px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-45098 size-medium hoverZoomLink\" src=\"https:\/\/test.ssschoolsplus.co.za\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/05\/Akhona-Simamane-Lindelani-Ladies-FC-160524-1-400x316.jpg\" alt=\"Akhona Simamane, of Lindelani Ladies FC, shows off her ball skills.\" width=\"400\" height=\"316\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-45098\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Akhona Simamane, of Lindelani Ladies FC, shows off her ball skills.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><strong>Edendale Technical High<\/strong>, led by coach <strong>Ntombifuthi Khumalo<\/strong>, is set to represent the South African girls&#8217; team at the <strong>CAF African Schools Football Championship<\/strong> in Tanzania from 21-24 May.<\/p>\n<p>In July 2023, Edendale and the <strong>Ubuntu Football Academy<\/strong> won the girls&#8217; and boys&#8217; titles at the 2023 <strong>Winter National Schools Sport Championship<\/strong> in Benoni, which secured them a place in the <strong>Council of Southern Africa Football Associations (Cosafa) final<\/strong> in Harare, Zimbabwe, in December.<\/p>\n<p>The South African sides, which were allowed to also include players from other schools, under the guidance of the <strong>South African Football Association (Safa)<\/strong> and through the <strong>Confederation of Africa Football (Caf)<\/strong> regulations, were both victorious, thus securing places at the CAF finals, which will be hosted in Tanzania from 21-24 May.<\/p>\n<p>Edendale beat <strong>Botswana<\/strong> 3-1 in their final, with a double from <strong>Khwezi Khoza<\/strong> and a third goal from <strong>Rethabile Molefe<\/strong> confirming their progress to the continental showpiece. Khoza finished the qualifiers as the event&#8217;s top goal scorer, netting 11 times.<\/p>\n<p>Last year, in the CAF Finals, Edendale was eliminated in the early rounds after stumbling against <strong>Morocco<\/strong> and <strong>Senegal<\/strong> at the <strong>King Zwelethini Stadium<\/strong> in Umlazi, just outside Durban.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_45100\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-45100\" style=\"width: 400px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-45100 hoverZoomLink\" src=\"https:\/\/test.ssschoolsplus.co.za\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/05\/Katlego-Malebana-230722-400x400.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"400\" height=\"400\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-45100\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Katlego Malebana. Mamelodi Sundowns Ladies Football Club<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The team to challenge for the title in Tanzania has been bolstered by a number of talented players, including <strong>Katlego Malebane<\/strong>, of <strong>Mamelodi Sundowns<\/strong>, and the 13-year-old <strong>Akhona Simamane<\/strong>, of <strong>Lindelani Ladies FC<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>Malebane joined Sundowns at just eight years of age and has proudly worn the yellow, blue and green jersey ever since.<\/p>\n<p>She left spectators mesmerised during the <strong>Kapstad Cup<\/strong> in 2022 and was one of the top players during the inaugural season of the <strong>Gauteng Women&#8217;s Development League<\/strong> in 2023, which the Brazilians won under the guidance of coach <strong>Rhoda Mulaudzi<\/strong>. Malebane has also represented the <strong>South African u17 national team<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>At just 13 years of age, Akhona Simamane appeared in the <strong>Hollywoodbets Super League<\/strong>, the top flight of women&#8217;s football in South Africa.
