{"id":46750,"date":"2024-05-26T08:09:04","date_gmt":"2024-05-26T06:09:04","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/ssschoolsplus.co.za\/?p=46750"},"modified":"2024-05-26T08:09:04","modified_gmt":"2024-05-26T06:09:04","slug":"wit-bulle-score-34-points-in-the-second-half-to-defeat-red-army","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/test.ssschoolsplus.co.za\/?p=46750","title":{"rendered":"Wit Bulle score 34 points in the second half to defeat Red Army"},"content":{"rendered":"<figure id=\"attachment_9915\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-9915\" style=\"width: 400px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-9915\" src=\"https:\/\/test.ssschoolsplus.co.za\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/05\/NewsG_Affies_vs_KES_schools_rugby-300x192.jpg\" alt=\"NewsG Affies vs KES schools rugby\" width=\"400\" height=\"257\" srcset=\"https:\/\/test.ssschoolsplus.co.za\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/05\/NewsG_Affies_vs_KES_schools_rugby-300x192.jpg 300w, https:\/\/test.ssschoolsplus.co.za\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/05\/NewsG_Affies_vs_KES_schools_rugby-768x493.jpg 768w, https:\/\/test.ssschoolsplus.co.za\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/05\/NewsG_Affies_vs_KES_schools_rugby.jpg 895w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 400px) 100vw, 400px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-9915\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">PHOTO: William Brown<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">After a fairly slow start, <strong>Affies<\/strong> stepped up a gear in the second half of their game against <strong>King Edward VII (KES) <\/strong>on Saturday, producing a clinical display, to claim a 52-26 victory in Johannesburg.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">KES scored the first try of the day, within the first five minutes of play, when their big 8th-man and captain<\/span><b> Kebotile Maake<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> excellently charging down an attempted clearance kick from the boot of <\/span><b>Reuben Pienaar. <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">He gathered the ball to score with ease and gave the hosts an early advantage.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Affies, though, have shown themselves to be a force to be reckoned with throughout the 2024 season, and while KES held their own in the first 20 minutes, they were hard pressed to keep with a barrage of attacking plays from the Wit Bulle.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The side from Pretoria struck back late in the opening stanza, scoring two tries in quick succession, through scrumhalf <\/span><b>Zirk Meyer <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and wing <\/span><b>Eagan Roux<\/b>, which helped the visitors edge ahead at the break.\u00a0<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">At halftime only four points separated the sides, with Affies 18-14 to the good.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> In the second half, however, they came out all guns&#8217; blazing, pushing deep into KES territory, while dominating the battle for possession.\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">By increasing the pace of the game, Affies were able to showcase their attacking abilities, which led to a 34-point boost on the scoreboard.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Wit Bulle impressed with their ball handling. There was no better example than when <strong>Eagan Roux<\/strong> scored his second, following a brilliant offload from fullback <strong>Ruben Groenewald, <\/strong>after the ball had been moved gracefully down the backline.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Affies favored the left-hand side of the field, probing away there until it brought them a try from <strong>Nico Grobler<\/strong>, which echoed Roux&#8217;s earlier effort.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">KES added a further 12 points in the second half, with their prolific wing <\/span><b>Haniel Monkoti<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> finishing the day with another hat-trick. He&#8217;s been a regular on the score sheet, week in and week out, and will surely be in the running for a Craven Week place.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Fly half <\/span><b>Vusi Moyo<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> converted one out of his two opportunities in the second half but was a little out of his groove. However, a fine penalty in the first half, from a difficult angle, from in front of the Affies&#8217; supporters, highlighted his ability.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">His opposite number, <\/span><b>Reuben Pienaar<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> has shown up well against KES in the past and he was on song once more against the Red Army, tallying 22 points, which included four conversions, three penalties and a try. He also orchestrated the Affies&#8217; backline with precision and directed play well with crisp passes and strategic kicks.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The mid-year exams are approaching, but Affies faces <strong>Die Ho\u00ebrskool Menlopark<\/strong> next weekend and they will be eager to build on the momentum they&#8217;ve accrued in an impressive season. They&#8217;ve lost only three times, to the top three teams in the country &#8211; <strong>Paul Roos Gimnasium<\/strong>, <strong>Grey College<\/strong> and <strong>Paarl Gimnasium<\/strong> &#8211; by a combined total of just 10 points.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>KES will put their rugby campaign on hold until 13 July, when they face <strong>Pretoria Boys High<\/strong> for a second time this season.
