KRUGERSDORP. – Luan Gilliomee<\/strong>, flyhalf and captain of Boland, produced a well-rounded performance on the opening day of the 60th annual Craven Week to steer his side to a 41-21 victory over the Leopards.<\/p>\n

Gillomee looked in total control and not at all phased throughout the match. He also converted all five of his side’s tries and slotted two penalties for a personal tally of 16 points.<\/p>\n

Boland already enjoyed a healthy 17-0 lead at the break.<\/p>\n

For the Leopards their flyhalf, Chris Dennis<\/strong>, could also feel more than pleased with his performance on the day. While the inside centre, Dundr\u00e9 Dempers<\/strong>, also deserves a pat on the back.<\/p>\n

In the pack of forwards the flanker Francois Dumond and eighthman GJ Steenberg did well.<\/p>\n

Boland will face Border in their second match of the tournament.<\/p>\n

South Western Districts<\/strong> secured a 41-34 victory over the Valke in the opening match at the Ras van Rooyen field.<\/p>\n

The Valke led 19-12 at the break, but it was SWD who managed to find the next gear in the second half.<\/p>\n

Right wing, Lee-Winn Pretorius<\/strong>, scored a brace of tries and was one of his side’s stars. The standout performance however belonged to fullback, Reinhart Viljoen<\/strong>, who later slotted in at flyhalf.<\/p>\n

Viljoen had a hand in a couple of his side’s tries and even scored a try from a rolling maul. Not too bad for a day’s work as a fullback.<\/p>\n

Their captain and outside centre, Kurt Coetzee<\/strong>, also produced a well-rounded performance.<\/p>\n

For the Valke their hooker, Danr\u00e9 Pike<\/strong>, as well as flanker, Zaide-Leigh Rippenaar<\/strong>, was leading the charge. Pike scored a brace of tries while his pinpoint throwing in the lineouts helped his side maintain a 100% record in this aspect of the game.<\/p>\n

The Valke will now face the Leopards in the opening match on Wednesday, while South Western Districts will have a tough encounter against the Sharks.<\/p>\n
