{"id":52162,"date":"2024-07-11T17:24:11","date_gmt":"2024-07-11T15:24:11","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/ssschoolsplus.co.za\/?p=52162"},"modified":"2024-07-11T17:24:11","modified_gmt":"2024-07-11T15:24:11","slug":"top-guns-return-to-turf-action-in-the-eastern-cape","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/test.ssschoolsplus.co.za\/?p=52162","title":{"rendered":"Top guns return to turf action in the Eastern Cape"},"content":{"rendered":"<figure id=\"attachment_45648\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-45648\" style=\"width: 400px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-45648 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/ssschoolsplus.co.za\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/05\/20240503120603_2R2A7531-1-400x267.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"400\" height=\"267\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-45648\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Photo: <strong>Grant Howard <\/strong><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>After the mid-year break, the Easterns Cape&#8217;s top guns, <a href=\"https:\/\/ssschoolsplus.co.za\/selborne-signs-off-in-style-while-st-andrews-and-kingswood-win-ahead-of-k-day\/\"><strong>Selborne College<\/strong><\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/ssschoolsplus.co.za\/wins-for-grey-and-selborne-college-in-the-eastern-cape\/\"><strong>Grey High School<\/strong><\/a>, and <a href=\"https:\/\/ssschoolsplus.co.za\/st-andrews-hunts-a-rare-win-at-selborne\/\"><strong>St Andrew\u2019s College<\/strong><\/a>, all return to action this weekend, determined to continue their strong seasons.<\/p>\n<p>Selborne hosts their city neighbours, <strong>Hudson Park,<\/strong> in East London, while Grey High welcomes George&#8217;s <strong>York High,<\/strong> and St Andrew&#8217;s hosts a showdown with <strong>Woodridge College<\/strong> in Makhanda.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">Catch all the action <strong>LIVE<\/strong> on <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/live.supersportschools.com\/\">SuperSport Schools<\/a><\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>Selborne and Grey High have been the standout teams in the province this year, compiling prolific records, with St Andrew&#8217;s a half-step behind them.<\/p>\n<p>This season, Grey High, coached by<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/hockey.supersportschools.com\/old-boy-andrew-beynon-returns-to-grey-as-head-of-hockey\/\"> Andrew Beynon<\/a>,<\/strong> has only lost three times against arguably the top two teams in the country, <strong>South African College High School<\/strong> <strong>(SACS)<\/strong>, who twice beat the Gqeberha school, and <strong>Paul Roos Gimnasium<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>Apart from those defeats, Grey, under the captaincy of <a href=\"https:\/\/ssschoolsplus.co.za\/day-3-stalemates-galore-as-teams-hunt-semi-final-spots-in-bloemfontein\/\"><strong>Kian Cambier, <\/strong><\/a>has played some exceptional hockey, which also saw them capture the bronze medal in a very competitive <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/ssschoolsplus.co.za\/prgs-mentality-monsters-claim-back-to-back-hibbert-shield-titles\/\">Hibbert Shield<\/a><\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>They head into their showdown against coach <strong>Jason Slater&#8217;<\/strong>s side having scored four good wins before the school holidays.<\/p>\n<p>Those victories came against<strong> Queen&#8217;s College<\/strong> (6-0), <strong>Woodridge College<\/strong> (6-1),<strong> Pearson High School<\/strong> (7-1), and <strong>St Andrew&#8217;s <\/strong>(2-1).<\/p>\n<p>Beynon&#8217;s lineup includes nine players who represented the Eastern Province u18A side at the <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/ssschoolsplus.co.za\/domingo-pleased-with-schools-talent-as-sashoc-continues-to-grow-hockey\/\">SASHOC National Week<\/a> <\/strong>last month. Grey&#8217;s skipper, <strong>Cambier,<\/strong> was outstanding for EP in a very tough pool and earned himself selection for the <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/ssschoolsplus.co.za\/sa-u18a-squad-announced-after-a-bumper-hockey-week-in-bloemfontein\/\">SA u18A squad<\/a><\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>Goalkeeper <strong>Kiano Broadhurst<\/strong> also earned the approval of the national selectors and was included in the <strong>SA u17<\/strong> squad.<\/p>\n<p>Against York, Beynon will look to his national players, along with the likes of <strong>Ben Ristow<\/strong>, the dangerous <strong>Luke Tait<\/strong>, <strong>Blake Muller<\/strong>, and <strong>Xander Elkington,<\/strong> to drive Grey&#8217;s challenge.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_46307\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-46307\" style=\"width: 400px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-46307\" src=\"https:\/\/ssschoolsplus.co.za\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/05\/WhatsApp-Image-2024-05-09-at-19.19.35_dbe32510-400x281.jpg\" alt=\"Selborne College's Tre' Gilbert will represent Border for the second year running in this year's SASHOC National Week in Bloemfontein. Photo: <strong>Shot by Shani Photography<\/strong><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>For Selborne College, their encounter against Hudson Park will be good preparation for their final three matches of the season.<\/p>\n<p>Coach <strong>KJ Friend&#8217;<\/strong>s team, despite a disappointing run at the Hibbert Shield in May, have enjoyed a very good season and have dominated in the Border region.<\/p>\n<p>Their last outing resulted in a 6-2 win over <strong>Stirling High School.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>They will be boosted by the return of their skipper, <strong>Tre Gilbert<\/strong>, who did duty for <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/ssschoolsplus.co.za\/border-confirms-strong-team-for-sashoc-national-week-in-bloemfontein\/\">Border<\/a><\/strong> at the SASHOC National Week and earned selection for the SA Schools B team.<\/p>\n<p>He\u2019ll be joined in the black and white by <strong>Waeden Plaatjies<\/strong><strong>, <\/strong><strong>Daniel Conroy<\/strong><strong>, <\/strong><strong>Daniel Sirgel<\/strong><strong>, <\/strong><strong>Shane Stagg<\/strong><strong>, <\/strong><strong>Gray van Heerden<\/strong><strong>, <\/strong>and <strong>Nathan Amon-Brown, <\/strong>all of whom represented Border in Bloemfontein.\u00a0A win against coach<strong> Sipe Matafeni<\/strong>\u2019s side would provide a welcome boost of confidence.<\/p>\n<p>In Makhanda, coach<strong> Dean Ferreira&#8217;<\/strong>s St Andrew\u2019s College boys tackle <strong>Woodridge College<\/strong>. They&#8217;ll have two matches remaining on their schedule after Friday&#8217;s match, against <strong>Dale College<\/strong> and Pearson High.<\/p>\n<p>Speaking of Dale, they\u2019ll be keen to get their season back on track when they host Stirling High in Qonce on Friday afternoon.<\/p>\n<p>In their last outing, Dale went down 0-1 against <strong>Kingswood College<\/strong>.
