The <strong>Red, Black and White<\/strong> struck first in that match, but Glenwood clawed their way back into the contest and eventually won it 2-1.<\/p>\n<p>Job done? Not quite. A 0-1 setback against <strong>Clifton College<\/strong> left the Green Machine on the back foot. They needed a win against DHS in a cross-pool game to ensure their passage to the quarterfinals. They got it, winning 2-0.<\/p>\n<p>Then, in the quarterfinals, they went a goal down to Northwood after <strong>Owami Maduna<\/strong> curled a brilliant shot across the goalkeeper and into the far corner. <strong>Alakhe Mdluli<\/strong> found a reply, however, and Glenwood went on to scrape a 5-4 win from the penalty spot.<\/p>\n<p>DHS, meanwhile, took on Clifton in the quarterfinals. Their Durban neighbours caused the <strong>Horseflies<\/strong> one or two scares, but DHS came away with a 2-0 win in the end.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_53760\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-53760\" style=\"width: 400px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-53760\" src=\"https:\/\/ssschoolsplus.co.za\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/07\/football-dhs-clifton-280724-400x294.jpg\" alt=\"DHS overcame Clifton 2-0 in the quarterfinals to book a semifinal duel with Michaelhouse.\" width=\"400\" height=\"294\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-53760\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">DHS overcame Clifton 2-0 in the quarterfinals to book a semifinal duel with Michaelhouse.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><strong>Michaelhouse<\/strong> got the better of Hilton in a battle of traditional rivals in the last eight, with a sensational rasping drive into the goalkeeper&#8217;s bottom right-hand corner from <strong>Jason Brufau<\/strong> proving to be a deserving winner.<\/p>\n<p>In an eagerly anticipated showdown, <strong>Westville Boys&#8217; High<\/strong> and Maritzburg College battled it out in the last of the quarterfinal contests.<\/p>\n<p>The <strong>Griffin<\/strong> were first onto the scoreboard, with <strong>Bayanda Dlamini<\/strong> striking from close range.<\/p>\n<p>Ace predator <strong>Mazithi Qasha<\/strong> levelled for College after pouncing on a defensive error and <strong>Nzolo Ngcemu<\/strong> then won it with a headed goal back across the &#8216;keeper.<\/p>\n<p>Before the semi-finals, ninth and tenth places were up for grabs, with\u00a0<strong>Kearsney College<\/strong> facing <strong>St Charles<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_53758\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-53758\" style=\"width: 400px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-53758 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/ssschoolsplus.co.za\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/07\/football-kearsney-st-charles-280724-1-400x267.jpg\" alt=\"Kearsney came close to scoring with this shot, which passed just wide of the goalkeeper's left-hand post, but their match against St Charles ended goalless.\" width=\"400\" height=\"267\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-53758\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Kearsney came close to scoring with this shot, which passed just wide of the goalkeeper&#8217;s left-hand post, but their match against St Charles ended goalless.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>They played to\u00a0a goalless draw and, with the matches running slightly behind schedule, they chose not to go to the spot to decide the outcome.<\/p>\n<p>Glenwood had done it the hard way to reach the semis, and that tough route to the final continued when they had to face Maritzburg College again.<\/p>\n<p>Once more, College scored first, and once more Glenwood came back from a goal down to win 2-1.<\/p>\n<p>DHS and Michaelhouse, meanwhile, shared a 1-1 draw, which sent the match to the penalty spot, from which <strong>School<\/strong> claimed a 3-2 victory.<\/p>\n<p>In the final, a contest that simmered and threatened to boil over at times, Glenwood coach <strong>Khaya Ngwengwe<\/strong> urged his players to keep calm, keep working hard. They would score on the counter, he said.
