Photo: <strong>Suzanne Meyer-Nell<\/strong><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>A whopping 50 goals were scored on the opening day of the <strong>u18 Challengers&#8217; Cup<\/strong> in Paarl in the Western Cape, with four teams making strong headway ahead of a jam-packed weekend of hockey.<\/p>\n<p>The tournament kicked off on Thursday morning at <strong>La Rochelle Girls&#8217; High School<\/strong>\u00a0and <strong>Paarl Girls&#8217; High <\/strong>and it continues through to Saturday, when the final will be played at 13:10. You can catch it live on <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/live.supersportschools.com\/category\/606f65f91eea03755e56797c\/sub-category\/66b21acd62022bd4155e6776\/\">SuperSport Schools<\/a><\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>While many eyes were trained on Bloemfontein for the annual <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/ssschoolsplus.co.za\/results-fairtree-super-12-tournament-2024-day-1\/\">Fairtree Super 12 tournament<\/a><\/strong>, the opening day of the<strong> Challengers&#8217; Cup<\/strong> produced exciting hockey and interesting results from the get-go.<\/p>\n<p>Pool A kicked off proceedings with a Western Cape clash between <strong>Parel Vallei<\/strong> and <strong>Rustenburg Girls&#8217; High<\/strong>.\u00a0Coach <strong>Olu Ncukana&#8217;<\/strong> Rustenburg claimed a 1-0 win over coach <strong>Jared Pitout&#8217;<\/strong>s side to get their title challenge off to a good start.<\/p>\n<p>With each team scheduled to play in three matches on the day, Rustenburg faced <strong>Ho\u00ebrskool Middelburg <\/strong>for a second time this season in their next game.<\/p>\n<p>In March, Middies thumped the Cape side 3-0 in the <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/ssschoolsplus.co.za\/day-3-girls-middelburg-defy-the-odds-to-reach-belgotex-sport-easter-hockey-tournament-final\/\">semi-finals of the Belgotex Sport Easter Hockey Tournament<\/a><\/strong>. Ncukana&#8217;s charges were eager to avenge that defeat, and they pulled it off, with <strong>Ally Goulding <\/strong>scoring the only goal of the game.<\/p>\n<p>Rustenburg completed their day&#8217;s assignments with a goalless draw against <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/ssschoolsplus.co.za\/affies-wins-from-the-penalty-spot-vs-rhenish-to-clinch-all-girls-festival-title\/\">All Girls Festival champions&#8217; Afrikaanse Ho\u00ebr Meisieskool Pretoria (Affies)<\/a><\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>Affies also finished their day with two wins and a draw, beating <strong>York High <\/strong>4-0 in their first match and following that up with a 2-1 victory over Parel Vallei.<\/p>\n<p>While they lost 0-1 against Rustenburg Girls&#8217; High, coach <strong>Alti Nel&#8217;<\/strong>s Ho\u00ebrskool Middelburg side scored good wins in their other matches.<\/p>\n<p>Firstly, they were guided to a 2-1 victory over Bethlehem Voortrekker, courtesy of goals by <strong>Abigail Esterhuizen<\/strong>, and<strong> Imke Grobbelaar<\/strong>. Then, in their last game, they overwhelmed York High 7-0 to post the biggest victory of the day.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Abigail Esterhuizen<\/strong> enjoyed a phenomenal outing, scoring an incredible six times, while <strong>Lume Smit<\/strong>, who was a regular goal scorer at the All Girls Festival<b>, <\/b>also found the back of the net.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_54628\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-54628\" style=\"width: 400px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-54628\" src=\"https:\/\/ssschoolsplus.co.za\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/08\/7Z2A8871-400x267.jpg\" alt=\"St Mary's Waverley are one of the unbeaten teams in this year's u18 Challengers' Cup. Photo: <strong>Suzanne Meyer-Nell<\/strong><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>In Pool B, it was coach <strong>Cindy Brown&#8217;<\/strong>s St Mary&#8217;s Waverley team that impressed.<\/p>\n<p>In their three matches, the Gauteng side registered two wins, before playing to a draw against <strong>Somerset College<\/strong> in their final match of the day, which was brought to a stop due to heavy rainfall.<\/p>\n<p>A <strong>Grace Faber<\/strong> goal secured the Johannesburg school a 1-0 win against Paarl Girls&#8217; High in their opener. Coach Brown&#8217;s side then went on to defeat another Western Cape team, <strong>Fairmont High School<\/strong>, by two goals to nil, with<strong> Jamey Forrester<\/strong>\u00a0and <strong>Zara Colyn<\/strong> striking for St Mary&#8217;s.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Kayla Grobbelaar<\/strong> scored in their final match of the day, which ended in a 1-1 draw with Somerset College.<\/p>\n<p>Behind St Mary&#8217;s in Pool B is <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/ssschoolsplus.co.za\/player-profile-zanike-coetzer-pearson-high-school\/\">Pearson High School<\/a><\/strong>, who started the tournament in top form before losing concentration in their final match.<\/p>\n<p>They got off to a strong start, claiming a 1-0 win over <strong>Paarl Girls&#8217; High<\/strong>, before shocking <strong>Somerset College<\/strong> 3-2.<\/p>\n<p>In that clash, <strong>Nyssa Slabbert<\/strong>, who has been a standout all season long for the Gqeberha school, scored twice, while <strong>Chanelle Venter&#8217;<\/strong>s goal sealed the victory.<\/p>\n<p>In their final match of the day, however,\u00a0coach <strong>Anton Peltenburg<\/strong>&#8216;s troops suffered a hefty 1-5 defeat at the hands of their provincial rivals, <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/ssschoolsplus.co.za\/holderness-inspires-dsg-to-spar-hockey-challenge-triumph-in-gqeberha\/\">DSG Makhanda<\/a><\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Abigail Holderness<\/strong> scored a hattrick for DSG, while <strong>Sarah-Jane Brits<\/strong>\u00a0and <strong>Anna Olivier<\/strong> completed the drubbing.\u00a0Pearson mustered a consolation goal through <strong>Tayla Wilson<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>On day two, Pearson will be eager to get back to winning ways when they take on St Mary&#8217;s in their first match, while DSG will feel confident about grabbing a second win when they take go up against Paarl Girls&#8217; High.<\/p>\n<p>With playoff spots on the line, day two is going to be about all-out action.
