Photo: <strong>Suzanne Meyer-Nell<\/strong><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><strong>St Mary&#8217;s Waverley<\/strong>, <strong>Rustenburg Girls&#8217; High<\/strong>, <strong>Afrikaanse Ho\u00ebr Meisieskool Pretoria (Affies)<\/strong>, and <strong>Somerset College<\/strong> all secured semifinal spots on Friday, day two of the <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/ssschoolsplus.co.za\/goals-aplenty-on-day-one-of-the-u18-challengers-cup-in-paarl\/\">Challengers&#8217; Cup<\/a><\/strong>, which is being held in Paarl, in the Western Cape.<\/p>\n<p>The tournament, which kicked off on Thursday morning is being hosted at <strong>La Rochelle Girls&#8217; High School\u00a0<\/strong>and <strong>Paarl Girls&#8217; High<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">It will conclude with the final on Saturday at 13:10.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">Catch it <strong>LIVE<\/strong> on <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/live.supersportschools.com\/category\/606f65f91eea03755e56797c\/sub-category\/66b21acd62022bd4155e6776\/\">SuperSport Schools<\/a><\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>Heading into the second day of action, coach <strong>Cindy Brown<\/strong>\u2019s St Mary&#8217;s side was in a strong position in Pool B. They looked like a potential title-winner after recording impressive results on day one.<\/p>\n<p>They played three matches on Thursday, winning two and drawing the other. Then, they began day two with a comfortable 3-0 win over Gqeberha&#8217;s <strong>Pearson High School<\/strong>, courtesy of goals from <strong>Lucy Viljoen<\/strong>, <strong>Erin Kruger<\/strong>, and <strong>Zara Colyn<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>By the time they were held to a goalless draw by <a href=\"https:\/\/ssschoolsplus.co.za\/holderness-inspires-dsg-to-spar-hockey-challenge-triumph-in-gqeberha\/\"><strong>DSG Makhanda<\/strong> <\/a>in their final pool match, coach Brown&#8217;s team had already secured a place in the final four.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I&#8217;m happy for the girls. I think we&#8217;ve played good hockey at times. We haven&#8217;t played our best, but we&#8217;ve managed to get results, so that&#8217;s a positive,&#8221; Brown told <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/ssschoolsplus.co.za\/hockey\/\">SuperSport Schools Plus.<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The one characteristic about this team is that we play well as a unit. No matter what the situation is, we dig deep. We&#8217;ve been up against it many times, and we&#8217;ve come out on top, which is pleasing.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The Johannesburg side entered the tournament on a high after winning the <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/ssschoolsplus.co.za\/st-marys-waverley-wins-pullen-trophy-waterkloof-lifts-howell-trophy\/\">Pullen Trophy<\/a><\/strong> last month, defeating <strong>Ho\u00ebrskool Monument<\/strong> 2-1 in the final.<\/p>\n<p>They endured a challenging start to the season but have flourished of late, and <strong>Brown<\/strong> believes stacking wins has added an extra spring to her players&#8217; step.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;It was a tough beginning to the season, but I think in the past six weeks we&#8217;ve been playing some brilliant hockey,&#8221; she said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFrom the Pullen Trophy into this, there&#8217;s a sense of belief in the team that we know our capabilities. Everyone fights hard and believes in the process, and in the semifinals, we just need to continue doing what has worked.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>St Mary&#8217;s will face one of the local sides, <strong>Rustenburg Girls&#8217; High<\/strong>, for a place in the final.<\/p>\n<p>Coach<strong> Olu Ncukana<\/strong>&#8216;s side is one of only three teams that remain unbeaten at the Challengers&#8217; Cup.<\/p>\n<p>After five matches, they&#8217;ve won three and played to draws against Affies\u00a0and <strong>Bethlehem Voortrekker<\/strong>, two tough opponents.<\/p>\n<p>Rustenburg finished second in Pool A, tied with Affies on 11 points, and separated by goal difference only.<\/p>\n<p>It will be Rustenburg&#8217;s second semi-final this year. In their first one, they were <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/ssschoolsplus.co.za\/day-3-girls-middelburg-defy-the-odds-to-reach-belgotex-sport-easter-hockey-tournament-final\/\">beaten by Ho\u00ebrskool Middelburg<\/a><\/strong> at the <strong>Belgotex Sport Easter Hockey Tournament<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;It&#8217;s always pleasing to make it to a semi-final, but we also understand that the tournament starts now, and we have put ourselves in a position to play for a medal twice,&#8221; Ncukana told <strong>SuperSport Schools Plus<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;On the back of some inconsistent form coming into the tournament, one of our key things was togetherness and playing for each other.
