Paarl Boys\u2019 High will play Paul Roos at Brug Street Paarl on Saturday 20 July, in the next Mutual & Federal Premier Interschools, televised on SuperSport 5 at 16h45 \u2013 18h15.<\/span><\/p>\n <\/span>Mutual & Federal Premier Interschools is a series of 12 matches, which feature the highest profile and most traditional interschool rugby rivalries, from South Africa\u2019s top rugby schools, broadcast live on SuperSport from April to August.<\/span><\/p>\n <\/span>Schoolboy rugby has served as one of the cornerstones of domestic rugby dating back more than a century, and true to its slogan \u201cHonouring Heritage. Playing for the Future\u201d, Mutual & Federal Premier Interschools is about History, Heritage and Tradition. The series, now in its second year, is expected to grow even stronger.<\/span><\/p>\n <\/span>The Mutual & Federal Premier Interschools stories is further captured in 12 magazine shows which preview all the games and provide historical overviews of these traditional schools and highlight other academic, cultural and sporting achievements.<\/span><\/p>\n <\/span>Notes and background \u2013 Historic overview of the upcoming teams<\/span> <\/span><\/strong>On Saturday 20 July Paarl will again be overrun by CL registration numbers when neighbours Paul Roos from Stellenbosch invade the quiet little town beneath the far famed rock of granite grey.<\/span><\/p>\n <\/span>Paarl Boys\u2019 High vs Paul Roos is one of the great derby clashes between two schools that have dominated Western Province schools rugby for many years. Together with Paarl Gym they have produced more than 75% of all Western Province Craven Week players since 1964.<\/span><\/p>\n <\/span>This year the maroon boys are out for revenge as it has been three years since they last tasted victory against the hooped jerseys of Paarl Boys\u2019 High. Traditionally the derbies go the way of the home team by the smallest of margins. Exceptions to the rule are in the 70\u2019s when Paarl Boys\u2019 High won 10 in a row and in the early 90\u2019s when Paul Roos won five on the trot. Since then the matches have been very close and evenly spread, until Paarl Boys\u2019 High\u2019s expected victory in 2012 over Paul Roos on their beloved Markotter field to make it two in a row. They would thus love to return the favour and beat Paarl Boys\u2019 High on Brug Street come Saturday.<\/span><\/p>\n <\/span>Paul Roos had a very indifferent season so far starting off with a loss against touring Argentinean side San Isidro. They followed this up with a good win over Glenwood at the Kearsney festival only to lose again two days later to EG Jansen. Further draws against Bishops and Selborne followed by losses against Grey PE, Affies, Paarl Gym and Boland Landbou will indicate that they are not having one of their best seasons in current years. They do however, possess the ability to beat any team on any given day especially now that their star WP and SA Schools centre Daniel Du Plessis is again fit and able to play. Du Plessis missed out on most of the season due to injury and that can partly be the reason for Paul Roos struggling in midfield so far.<\/span><\/p>\n <\/span>Paarl Boys\u2019 High is also not having the greatest of seasons having already lost four games and not reaching the same heights of 2012 so far. Losses to Waterkloof, Outeniqua, Glenwood and Grey College have seen them change captain\u2019s midway through the season. After the Glenwood loss, there was a radical change in personnel and new captain Thomas Du Toit took over the leadership role. This culminated in what looked like better cohesion within the team and they racked up some very good wins. They showed great character in coming back from 20 points down against Grey to within a whisker of winning the game in Bloemfontein. Du Toit leading from the front with hooker Daniel du Plessis (Not to be confused with the centre from Paul<\/span> <\/span>The first recorded time the old boys of the two schools played together for SA was in 1910 when the Springboks played Great Britain in a three test series. Dirkie de Villiers and Cocky Hahn became Paarl Boys\u2019 High\u2019s first Springboks while Gideon Roos (Brother of Paul Roos), Dick and Lammetjie Luyt and Koot Reynecke where the PRG representatives.<\/span><\/p>\n <\/span>Two other famous Springboks, Jannie Engelbrecht (PRG) and Mannetjies Roux (Paarl Boys\u2019 High) both made their debuts for South Africa in 1960. J.H. Neethling of the Stellenbosch Dutch Reformed Church writes to Dr. Langham Dale, Superintendent General of Education of the Cape:<\/span><\/p>\n <\/span>\u201cAs a piece of news that will interest you, I may state that yesterday (28 January 1864) 30 inhabitants of this district have decided to erect a gymnasium or Latin School. They have guaranteed 465 pounds (R930) per annum, chosen a Board of Directors of five persons to carry out the resolutions with all possible speed and<\/span> <\/span>In 1879 the Gymnasium and College had separate functionally. The College acquired the name \u201cStellenbosch College\u201d. In 1885 the separation also became physical when the school and College moved to new but separate premises between Andringa and Van Ryneveld Streets. The name Stellenbosch College changed to Victoria College in 1887 and this institution became the University of Stellenbosch in 1918.<\/span><\/p>\n <\/span>In 1887, \u201cThe Young Men\u2019s Home\u201d or \u201cHet Tehuis\u201d, the first hostel for boys, opened its doors under the supervision of Mr J.D. Krige \u2013 later affectionately known as OomJapie \u201cHome\u201d. The present school hall is named after him. He was vice-rector at the time of his retirement in 1948, and ever since, a painting of him takes the place of honour next to the stage.<\/span><\/p>\n <\/span>The school was renamed three times, Stellenbosch Boys\u2019 High and Victoria College after the Queen. In 1940, it was renamed after Paul Roos, a former captain of the Springbokrugby union team. Roos was a former pupil and teacher at Paul Roos Gymnasium, and was the school’s rector from 1910 to 1940.<\/span><\/p>\n <\/span>The Rhodes Scholarship was instituted in 1903, and Paul Roos is one of four schools in South Africa that may award a Rhodes Scholarship every year to an ex-pupil to study at the University of Oxford.<\/span><\/p>\n <\/span>Rugby at Paul Roos<\/span><\/p>\n <\/span>The words Paul Roos and rugby are synonymous as the great man was the originator of the now famous Springbok emblem and name for the South African national team. Roos!!) being the talisman that ignited the comeback. Both Du Toit and Du Plessis represented WP at Cravenweek and both got picked for SA Schools team. Sadly though, Du Plessis injured his ankle in the final game at Cravenweek and won\u2019t be able to participate in Saturday\u2019s game.<\/span>
Paul Roos centre Daniel Du Plessis is the son of famous Springbok and WP centre Michael du Plessis and of course the cousin of the 2012 Paarl Boys\u2019 mercurial flyhalf Jean-Luc Du Plessis. Jean-Luc\u2019s father, Carel, of course, is brother to Michael and also an old boy from Paarl Boys\u2019. The two Du Plessis brothers played together for Western Province in the 80\u2019s as well as for the Springboks in 10 tests from 1982 to 1989. In that same era the Du Plessis\u2019 played for WP and the Springboks with another famous PRG old boy, Pieter Gerhardus (Hempies) Du Toit, who was known for his power come scrum time. This only shows how deep the roots of these two schools are embedded in WP and South African rugby.<\/span>
The extreme rivalry runs deep between the two schools but so do the friendships. Over the years so many boys from the two schools have represented WP in various age group teams that when they get to their matric year they have played just as often with each other than against each other.<\/span>
PRG and Paarl Boys\u2019 High were also the two Cape schools invited to the first St.John\u2019s festival and have been regular attendees of this festival over the years. In 1999 the Paarl Boys\u2019 team was so depleted with injuries that they were one player <\/span>short in their starting 15 for the last game against Kearsney. Up stepped George Hauptfleisch from PRG and pulled on a Paarl Boys\u2019 High jersey to help them out. He even scored a try in Neil Fullard\u2019s No 3 jersey so the try was accredited to Neil! Paarl Boys\u2019 High then helped out PRG by providing some substitutes for their bench just in case PRG get injuries!<\/span><\/p>\n

Ho\u00ebr Jongenskool Paarl (also known as Paarl Boys\u2019 High, Paarl Boys’, BHS or HJS) is one of the oldest schools in South Africa. Built in 1868 the school’s rich history is filled with tradition and pride. The first building to house the school was a granary on Zeederbergplein, the owner of which was Mr. D. Beyers (a close friend to the first<\/span>
headmaster, Rev. Jeffreys). The first years of the school were unstable ones, with the school increasing in size every year, larger facilities were required frequently. The grounds on which the school stands today were originally formed part of the farm Berlyn owned by Mr. P.J Malherbe.<\/span>
Paarl Boys’ High has featured in the academic merit list of the Western Cape for ten years running and has been featuring in the top ten for the duration as well, making it one of the top academic schools in the province. The school is bilingual, with classes in English and Afrikaans and has maintained a 100% pass rate for over a decade.<\/span>

Paarl Boys\u2019 High can be seen primarily, as a boarding institution. The erection of the first hostel, Monte Bello, in 1901 can be seen as the one of the greatest turning points in the history of the school. This event inaugurated the change from a small school in a small farming community to a school to be esteemed nationally. In 2012 the four hostels, Bellevue, Imhoff, Monte Bello and Werda, house over 400 learners from all parts of South Africa and from abroad.<\/span>

It is important to win, but that should not be the primary objective. A sportsman may never be abused to ensure the success of a team. The primary objective at Boys\u2019 High must be one of enjoyment, for both player and coach. Dante van der Merwe was appointed captain of the Academy week team and was also called up to the Cravenweek squad after an injury and played from the bench in WP games against the Bulls and in the final against the Lions. Thus in the end there were 9 Paarl Boys\u2019 Highers representing WP in the victorious team that went unbeaten at the Cravenweek and won the unofficial final. A feather in the cap for them indeed!<\/span>
Thomas du Toit and Daniel du Plessis both got picked for the 2013 SA Schools team.<\/span><\/p>\n
