One of South <\/span>Africa\u2019s<\/span> premier <\/span>girls’<\/span> water polo tournaments, the Mackenzie Cup<\/a><\/strong>, will see 16 top teams battle it <\/span>out<\/span> for supremacy and bragging rights in Cape Town from Friday. <\/span><\/p>\n

The annual tournament, hosted by Reddam House Constantia<\/strong>, features <\/span>u19 matches taking place at the <\/span>school’s<\/span> Indoor Aquatic Centre<\/strong>, while <\/span>the action in the u13 section <\/span>of the <\/span>tournament<\/span> goes down in the outdoor pool.<\/span><\/p>\n

The event kicks off on Friday morning and <\/span>concludes with the final on Sunday, 15 September, <\/span>at<\/span> 14:30.<\/span><\/p>\n

This <\/span>year\u2019s<\/span> tournament promises to captivate water polo enthusiasts in and around the Mother City, and a new format will add extra spice to the mix.<\/span><\/p>\n

With another two teams on board, instead of the traditional two pools of seven teams each, the organisers, led by Nick <\/strong><\/span>Tinkler,<\/strong> have changed things around, creating four groups of four teams, with a round-robin stage, quarterfinals, and the finale.<\/span><\/p>\n

The three-day event will pit some of the best water polo-playing schools in the country against each other. <\/span><\/p>\n

The hosts, Reddam, are in Group A and will face <\/span>Gqeberha’s<\/span> Pearson High School<\/strong>, Rhenish <\/strong><\/span>Girls’<\/strong> High<\/strong>, and Somerset College<\/strong>, who, along with Group C’s <\/span>Fish Hoek<\/strong>, <\/span>are the new additions to the tournament.<\/span><\/p>\n

Reddam will be hoping to emulate the form that took them to a third-place finish at the <\/span>Old Petrian’s Water Polo Tournament <\/a><\/strong><\/span>in Johannesburg earlier this year. <\/span><\/p>\n

They will, however, have to do it without three influential, outstanding players, <\/span>Hannah<\/strong> Banks<\/strong>, Emma Catto<\/strong>, and Roxanne Uys<\/strong>, who are all on national duty at the World Championships in China<\/a><\/strong>. <\/span><\/p>\n

Group B is <\/span>an<\/span> exciting <\/span>one<\/span> and will feature three Cape sides – Wynberg Girls’ High<\/strong>, Springfield Convent School<\/strong>, and a Herschel Invitation<\/strong> team – in action.<\/span> They’ll be up against the only school from KwaZulu-Natal, Durban Girls’ College (DGC)<\/strong>, who are also the defending champions.<\/span><\/p>\n

DGC, after winning the title in 2023, will, undoubtedly, be among the <\/span>favorites<\/span> to win the event<\/span>. Earlier this year, they claimed gold at the National Aquatics Festival<\/a> <\/strong>in Durban and they’re a dangerous outfit when firing on all cylinders.<\/span><\/p>\n

Group C will <\/span>be contested<\/span> by Herschel<\/strong>, Clarendon High School for Girls<\/strong>, Rustenburg Girls’ High<\/strong>, and Fish Hoek.<\/span><\/p>\n

Herschel won the Old <\/strong><\/span>Petrian\u2019s<\/strong> Water Polo Tournament<\/strong> earlier this <\/span>year<\/span> and they will be brimming with confidence, although, like Reddam, they will also be without three star players who are in the SA u18 team – Amy van Breda<\/strong>, Alexa de Villiers<\/strong>, and Emily van Heerden<\/strong><\/span>. Herschel won the tournament back in 2022, and they’ll be keen to get their hands on the trophy once again.<\/span><\/p>\n

Group D, meanwhile, features a couple of challengers from the Eastern Cape in Collegiate <\/strong><\/span>Girls’\u00a0<\/strong>High<\/strong>,<\/span> and DSG Makhanda<\/strong>.<\/span><\/p>\n

They’ll face a Reddam House Invitational<\/strong> <\/span>side<\/span>\u00a0and St <\/strong><\/span>Cyprian’s,<\/strong> who<\/span> are not to be underestimated.<\/span><\/p>\n

The <\/span>group\u2019s<\/span> action gets underway with an Eastern Cape derby when DSG takes on Collegiate at 09:00<\/strong>.<\/span><\/p>\n
