{"id":59379,"date":"2024-10-15T11:37:03","date_gmt":"2024-10-15T09:37:03","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/ssschoolsplus.co.za\/?p=59379"},"modified":"2024-10-15T11:37:03","modified_gmt":"2024-10-15T09:37:03","slug":"edendale-captures-the-siyabonga-nomvethe-schools-cup","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/test.ssschoolsplus.co.za\/?p=59379","title":{"rendered":"Edendale captures the Siyabonga Nomvethe Schools Cup"},"content":{"rendered":"<figure id=\"attachment_59383\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-59383\" style=\"width: 400px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-59383\" src=\"https:\/\/ssschoolsplus.co.za\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/10\/Edendale-Technical-High-School-12-10-24-400x267.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"400\" height=\"267\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-59383\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Edendale Technical High School players celebrate their victory after winning the Siyabonga Nomvethe Schools Cup.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The champions of the <strong>Siyabonga Nomvethe Schools Cup<\/strong> were crowned on Saturday in Durban<\/p>\n<p>In the u19 division of the competition, which featured teams from KwaZulu-Natal, the winners, <strong>Edendale Technical High School<\/strong> received a prize of R20 000, gold medals, and a new soccer kit, while the runners-up, <strong>Mningi High School<\/strong>, received silver medals and a soccer kit.<\/p>\n<p>The final went to a penalty shootout after the teams played to a 1-1 draw in regulation time. Edendale, then, triumphed 5-3 from the spot.<\/p>\n<p>There was some consolation for Mningi when their <strong>Simangaliso Mbuyazi <\/strong>claimed the top goal scorer award and was also named the player of the tournament. Edendale&#8217;s<strong> Luyanda Zulu<\/strong>, aged 16, received recognition as the youngest player.<\/p>\n<p>The tournament was broadcast live by <strong>SuperSport Schools <\/strong>on the <strong>SuperSport Schools App<\/strong> and online.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Siyabonga Nomvethe<\/strong>, who played professionally from 1997 to 2020 and earned 81 caps for South Africa, said the tournament is a collaborative effort involving the<strong> Siyabonga Nomvethe Foundation<\/strong>, the <strong>KwaZulu-Natal Department of Education<\/strong>, and the <strong>Department of Sports, Arts, and Culture (DSAC)<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Thami Mchunu<\/strong>, the<strong> President of the KwaZulu-Natal Sports Confederation<\/strong>, attended the final at the <strong>Hoy Park Sports Complex <\/strong>and, in a press statement, said: &#8220;I hope this tournament will change many lives. I want to see another Nomvethe emerge from KZN.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Nomvethe, the Tournament Director, whose club career included stints with, among others, <strong>Kaizer Chiefs, Orlando Pirates,<\/strong> and <strong>AmaZulu<\/strong>, as well as Italian teams <strong>Udinese,<\/strong> <strong>Salernitana<\/strong>, and <strong>Empoli<\/strong>, emphasised his commitment to identifying and nurturing emerging talent through the Siyabonga Nomvethe Foundation. He said the initiative was designed to foster youth development and contribute positively to the KwaZulu Natal community.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI know for sure another Nomvethe will come from this tournament. I can attest that the talent is big here,\u201d he told the schools at the awards ceremony.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI played in <strong>Italy, Sweden<\/strong>, and <strong>Denmark.<\/strong> You can do the same, and you have what it takes to follow in my footsteps.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He encouraged corporate sponsors to support the tournament\u2019s growth and expansion., saying: &#8220;I would like to see sponsors come on board to back us up because we have started growing in KZN and we want to go nationwide.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Nomvethe ended by saying it had been a family effort putting the event together. &#8220;I want to thank my family for working together \u2013 my two children, my wife, and my sisters, as well as family friends &#8211; who supported this tournament.
