St Stithians College<\/strong> plays host to the 30th edition of one of South Africa\u2019s biggest water polo tournaments, the Saints Invitational<\/strong>, from Thursday, 24 October, to Sunday, 27 October.<\/p>\n

The four-day tournament will welcome 40 schools from across South Africa and Zimbabwe, with over 500 players in action in 144 top-class water polo games in front of hundreds of supporters.<\/p>\n

The event is evenly divided into 20 boys’ and 20 girls’ sides, and each competition features four pools of five teams.<\/p>\n

The girls’ 2023 champions, Herschel Girls School<\/strong>, are in Pool D and are pitted against Zimbabwe’s Chisipite Senior School<\/strong>, Kingswood College<\/strong>, Crawford Lonehill<\/strong>, and the hosts, St Stithians Girls’ College<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Last year’s runner-up, Roedean School<\/strong> is in Pool A, where they will face Diocesan School for Girls (DSG Makhanda)<\/strong>, Rand Park High<\/strong>, St Mary’s Waverley<\/strong>, and Kingsmead College<\/strong>, who will be their first obstacle on Thursday morning.<\/p>\n

The recent winner of the Roedean Prestige Cup<\/strong><\/a>, Reddam House Bedfordview<\/strong>, is in Pool C, along with\u00a0Beaulieu College<\/strong>, Clarendon High School for Girls<\/strong>, Pearson High<\/strong>, and St Anne’s Diocesan College<\/strong>, who showed they are a team to be reckoned with at their home tournament at the end of September.<\/p>\n

Pool D should be very interesting. It includes last year’s bronze medallists, Reddam House Constantia<\/strong>, the winner of two tournaments in late 2024, including the MacKenzie Cup<\/a><\/strong> and the St Anne’s Water Polo Tournament<\/a><\/strong>. They’re opposed by Collegiate Girls’ High School<\/strong>, Durban Girls’ College (DGC)<\/strong>, St Dominic’s<\/strong>, and St Peter’s College<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

In Pool A of the boys’ competition, Rondebosch Boys’ High<\/strong> appears to be the team to beat. They’ll face a stiff challenge from Affies<\/strong>, while Woodridge Stayers<\/a><\/strong>‘ winners, St Andrew’s College<\/strong>, will carry confidence into the event. Durban High School (DHS)<\/strong> and Grey High<\/strong> complete the lineup.<\/p>\n

Two of the hottest teams in the country, St John’s College<\/strong> and Bishops<\/strong> are in Pool B. Bishops won the SACS Water Polo Tournament<\/a>, <\/strong>but finished only third in their pool there, while St John’s topped Pool A. Bishops, however, beat them in the final. King Edward VII (KES)<\/strong>, Pearson High<\/strong>, and Michaelhouse<\/strong> will be hard-pressed to challenge those two sides.<\/p>\n

Pool C features the 2023 Saints Invitational champions<\/a><\/strong>, South African College High School (SACS)<\/strong>, who claimed the honours in the Clifton Water Polo Tournament<\/a><\/strong> at the end of last month. They’re going to be challenged, however. Hilton College<\/strong> and Kearsney College<\/strong> met in the final of the KZN Top 10<\/a><\/strong> recently and they’re playing well.<\/p>\n

As luck would have it, they’re drawn to face one another in their opening matches.\u00a0Hilton showed they’re a top side at the SACS Water Polo Tournament, while Kearsney is an emerging power and they won the Northwood Stayers<\/strong> tournament on the past weekend. They have a young but very experienced lineup.\u00a0 Jeppe High School for Boys<\/strong> and Pretoria Boys High<\/strong> will have their hands full against the other three teams.<\/p>\n

The hosts, St Stithians, who performed well at the SACS Water Polo Tournament, where they made the semifinals, will be confident of handling the challenges posed by their Pool D opposition. St David’s Marist Inanda<\/strong>, a local rival, could be their toughest opponent. They’ll also take on St Alban’s College<\/strong>, Reddam House Constantia<\/strong>, and Grey College<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

It’s hard to name a favourite, but SACS will be aiming to capture the title for a fourth year in succession.<\/p>\n

St Andrew’s College faces Gqeberha’s Grey High School in the opening game of the boys’ tournament, with title contenders, St John\u2019s College, doing battle with their neighbours, King Edward VII (KES), in the following game.<\/p>\n

Jeppe will hope to catch SACS cold in the day’s third clash.<\/p>\n

The action concludes on Sunday.<\/p>\n
