{"id":60097,"date":"2024-10-25T18:26:19","date_gmt":"2024-10-25T16:26:19","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/ssschoolsplus.co.za\/?p=60097"},"modified":"2024-10-25T18:26:19","modified_gmt":"2024-10-25T16:26:19","slug":"four-teams-remain-unbeaten-after-day-two-of-the-saints-invitational","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/test.ssschoolsplus.co.za\/?p=60097","title":{"rendered":"Four teams remain unbeaten after day two of the Saints Invitational"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-60098\" src=\"https:\/\/ssschoolsplus.co.za\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/10\/837391F5-13FA-45E3-A6A7-26C8DBAE2FC8-400x267.jpeg\" alt=\"Photo: Debbi Adcock Photography\" width=\"400\" height=\"267\" \/>The <strong>St Stithians College<\/strong> Olympic North and South swimming pools played host to the second day of the highly competitive <strong>St Stithians College Invitational Water Polo Tournament<\/strong> on Friday.<\/p>\n<p>After a sizzling <a href=\"https:\/\/ssschoolsplus.co.za\/sacs-hopeful-despite-a-tough-start\/\"><strong>opening day<\/strong><\/a>, during which the defending champions in the boys&#8217; section, <strong>South African College High School (SACS)<\/strong> suffered a 6-7 defeat to <strong>Hilton College<\/strong>, day two threatened more upsets and it duly delivered.<\/p>\n<p>Heading into the day&#8217;s action, <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/ssschoolsplus.co.za\/bishops-targets-saints-invitational-title\/\">Bishops Diocesan College<\/a><\/strong>, <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/ssschoolsplus.co.za\/day-3-kes-reiback-influential-as-rondebosch-claims-kes-title\/\">Rondebosch Boys&#8217; High<\/a>,<\/strong> <strong>St David&#8217;s Marist Inanda<\/strong>, and <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/ssschoolsplus.co.za\/kearsney-the-overall-champs-as-clifton-wins-two-kzn-top-10-water-polo-titles\/\">Kearsney College<\/a><\/strong>\u00a0were all unbeaten.<\/p>\n<p>Those four sides maintained their clean records on Friday, adding another two wins to their records to end the round-robin stage sitting atop their respective groups.<\/p>\n<p>In Group A, Rondebosch, coached by<strong> Jared Wingate-Pearse<\/strong>, claimed victories against two Eastern Cape schools, sneaking by <strong>St Andrew&#8217;s College<\/strong> 10-9, before scoring a more convincing 8-2 win over <strong>Grey High School<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>St Andrew&#8217;s, who won the <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/ssschoolsplus.co.za\/makhanda-schools-lift-boys-and-girls-trophies-at-woodridge-stayers\/\">Woodridge Stayers tournament<\/a> <\/strong>recently, finished the day in second place after winning three of their four matches. They were followed by <strong>Durban High School (DHS)<\/strong>, <strong>Grey High<\/strong>, and <strong>Affies<\/strong>, with the latter two remaining winless after they shared a 7-7 draw.<\/p>\n<p>Bishops was dominant in Group B and on Friday continued the impressive form they showed on day one. They rolled to a 16-5 win over <strong>King Edward VII 16-5 (KES)<\/strong> before <strong>Matt Fenn<\/strong> netted five times against <strong>St John&#8217;s College<\/strong> to lead his team to an outstanding 9-6 win over a strong side. St John&#8217;s star, <strong>Nicholas Searle<\/strong>, netted five of his team&#8217;s six goals.<\/p>\n<p>Heading into the tournament, Group C had been dubbed the &#8220;group of death&#8221; with three top-quality teams &#8211; <strong>Hilton<\/strong>, <strong>Kearsney<\/strong>, and <strong>SACS <\/strong>&#8211;\u00a0set to face each other.<\/p>\n<p>It has been the KwaZulu-Natal teams that have stepped up to the plate. Kearsney, coached by <strong>Nick Rodda<\/strong>, notched up four notable wins, and on day two defeated the defending champions, SACS, 10-8 in the final match of the day.<\/p>\n<p>Hilton also cemented their spot in the play-offs with wins against <strong>Pretoria Boys High<\/strong> and <strong>Jeppe High School for Boys<\/strong>, which followed victory over SACS on Thursday and a loss to Kearsney. Pretoria Boys High remains winless, while Jeppe has picked up just one win so far in the tournament, although they were very competitive in losses against the group&#8217;s three favoured teams.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_60099\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-60099\" style=\"width: 400px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-60099\" src=\"https:\/\/ssschoolsplus.co.za\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/10\/2J4A1147-400x267.jpeg\" alt=\"Photo: Photo: Debbi Adcock Photography\" width=\"400\" height=\"267\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-60099\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Photo: Debbi Adcock Photography<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Group D, while maybe not one that immediately captured the imagination, has delivered some fine play in the pool, with St David&#8217;s Marist Inanda catching the eye.<\/p>\n<p>They surprised some by beating <strong>St Stithians<\/strong> 5-3 in the group&#8217;s key clash on day two, which kept their record at a perfect four from four. They also won against<b> Reddam House Constantia <\/b>on Friday.<\/p>\n<p><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/ssschoolsplus.co.za\/day-4-hansen-stars-as-selborne-retains-itec-title\/\">Grey College<\/a>, <\/strong>meanwhile, picked up their first victory of the tournament after edging a struggling <strong>St Alban&#8217;s<\/strong> team 6-4.<\/p>\n<p>The group matches are done and dusted and the top teams will enter day three pursuing a place in the semi-finals.<\/p>\n<p>SACS, the three-time defending champions, despite suffering two defeats in their group, are not out of the running. They can still secure a quarterfinal berth if they beat Saints in a cross-pool playoff.
