{"id":60369,"date":"2024-11-01T09:48:43","date_gmt":"2024-11-01T07:48:43","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/ssschoolsplus.co.za\/?p=60369"},"modified":"2024-11-01T09:48:43","modified_gmt":"2024-11-01T07:48:43","slug":"sa-u17-girls-chasing-glory-at-dato-mirnawan-cup","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/test.ssschoolsplus.co.za\/?p=60369","title":{"rendered":"SA u17 girls chasing glory at Dato Mirnawan Cup"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-60370\" src=\"https:\/\/ssschoolsplus.co.za\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/10\/THE-TEAM-400x477.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"400\" height=\"477\" \/>After finishing fourth at the <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/ssschoolsplus.co.za\/lessons-learnt-as-sa-girls-finish-fourth-in-malaysia\/\">Dato Mirnawan Cup<\/a><\/strong> in Malaysia in 2023, the <strong>South African u17<\/strong> <strong>girls&#8217; hockey team<\/strong> enters this year&#8217;s event focused on being in the mix for the silverware.<\/p>\n<p>The competition, which is in its third year, runs from 1-10 November in <strong>Kuala Lumpur<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\">Stay glued to <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/ssschoolsplus.co.za\/hockey\/\">SuperSport Schools Plus<\/a><\/strong> for all the updates.<\/p>\n<p>In 2023, coach <strong>Omari Pienaar-Geyer&#8217;<\/strong>s side won three of their six matches, beating Malaysia A, Malaysia B, and India. However, in the bronze medal match, the Indians reversed their earlier defeat, scoring a 2-0 win.<\/p>\n<p>A new crop of talent, co-captained by <strong>Jehan Abrahams<\/strong> and <strong>Amber Fairon<\/strong>, with <strong>Caprice Bengtson<\/strong> serving as the vice-captain,\u00a0 will be flying the flag of the Rainbow Nation.<\/p>\n<p>That trio participated in last year&#8217;s Mirnawan Cup and will carry with them valuable lessons learnt from that experience.<\/p>\n<p>The dangerous Abrahams plies her trade for <strong>Wynberg Girls&#8217; High<\/strong> and represented Western Province during the <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/ssschoolsplus.co.za\/sashoc-announces-sa-schools-girls-u18-team\/\">u18 SASHOC National Week<\/a><\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>Fairon is a product of <strong>Dainfern College<\/strong> and played for the Southern Gauteng team that <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/ssschoolsplus.co.za\/phume-and-dutton-shine-as-southerns-are-crowned-u18-champions\/\">won the u18 title at the SASHOC National Week<\/a> <\/strong>for the first time in 14 years; meanwhile, Bengston will be flying the <strong>Durban Girls&#8217; College<\/strong> and <strong>KZN Coastal<\/strong> flag high in Malaysia.<\/p>\n<p>Eastern Province has three representatives, including <strong>Diocesan School for Girls<\/strong>&#8216; <strong>Holderness<\/strong> sisters, <strong>Lucy<\/strong> and <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/ssschoolsplus.co.za\/abigail-holderness-aims-to-inspire-dsg-makhanda-to-more-glory-in-2025\/\">Abigail, <\/a><\/strong>who have jumped on the plane with Collegiate Girls&#8217; High star, <strong>Emihle Mazomba<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>Apart from skipper Abrahams, Western Province will be represented by <strong>Chelsey McGregor (St Cyprian&#8217;s School) <\/strong>and<strong> Peyton Marais <\/strong>from <strong>Curro Durbanville<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>Boland, on the other hand, has the most representatives, with five players. They include three &#8211; <strong>Sarah-Ellen Groenewald<\/strong>,<strong> Grace Hobbs<\/strong>, and<strong> Philippa Viljoen<\/strong> &#8211; from the Fairtree Super 12-winning <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/ssschoolsplus.co.za\/a-dominant-season-sees-rhenish-finish-on-top-but-the-focus-has-already-shifted-to-2025\/\">Rhenish Girls&#8217; High<\/a><\/strong>. They are joined by the Paarl Gimnasium duo of <strong>Alanda Rademeyer <\/strong>and <strong>Karli van Deventer<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>For KZN Coastal, it&#8217;s Bengston, <strong>Chelsey Woolf,<\/strong>\u00a0and <strong>Asanele Zuma<\/strong> from Durban Girls&#8217; College, and <strong>Sibabalwe Mfazwe<\/strong>, from <strong>St Mary&#8217;s DSG (Kloof)<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Southern Free State<\/strong>&#8216;s <strong>Kirstin Booysen<\/strong>, from <strong>Oranje<\/strong>, and Northern Gauteng&#8217;s <strong>Lenique Vogel<\/strong>, who like the team&#8217;s coach Omari Geyer-Pienaar, hails from <strong>Ho\u00ebrskool Waterkloof.<\/strong> complete the squad.<\/p>\n<p><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/ssschoolsplus.co.za\/hockey\/\">SuperSport Schools Plus<\/a><\/strong> caught up with head coach Pienaar-Geyer ahead of the tournament to discuss the team&#8217;s preparations.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The team is feeling really excited and optimistic ahead of our hockey tour to Malaysia,&#8221; she said.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We&#8217;ve been training hard, both as a team and individually, and we are excited to showcase our skills on an international stage.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;There&#8217;s a great sense of team spirit, excitement, and determination among the players, and we&#8217;re all looking forward to the adventure, challenges, and opportunities that this tour will bring us.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-60371 alignright\" src=\"https:\/\/ssschoolsplus.co.za\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/10\/THE-TEAM-2-400x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"400\" height=\"300\" \/><\/p>\n<p>In an attempt to improve on last year&#8217;s fourth-place finish, and taking lessons learnt from that tournament, the team has adopted different methods of preparation, including training at a high intensity in hot conditions.<\/p>\n<p>Pienaar-Geyer said 2023&#8217;s experiences have equipped her charges to compete well in Malaysia.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I think we are a lot more prepared than last year,&#8221; she explained. &#8220;We have had the opportunity to play as a team, and that&#8217;s something I feel would have been really beneficial for last year&#8217;s team.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Also, with having experience from last year, it was a lot easier for us to get across to the girls the extreme conditions we would be playing in, which has been so helpful in mentally preparing the team.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;In comparison to last year, we have had a lot more structured training schedule and high-performance plan, which has the girls feeling confident and ready, which we lacked last year.
