{"id":62822,"date":"2025-01-20T10:02:58","date_gmt":"2025-01-20T08:02:58","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/ssschoolsplus.co.za\/?p=62822"},"modified":"2025-01-20T10:02:58","modified_gmt":"2025-01-20T08:02:58","slug":"st-johns-makes-winning-start-kearsney-westville-northwood-among-kzn-winners","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/test.ssschoolsplus.co.za\/?p=62822","title":{"rendered":"St John&#8217;s makes winning start, Kearsney, Westville, Northwood among KZN winners"},"content":{"rendered":"<figure id=\"attachment_62827\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-62827\" style=\"width: 333px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-62827 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/ssschoolsplus.co.za\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/01\/STJ1-333x500.jpg\" alt=\"Photo: St John's College on Facebook.\" width=\"333\" height=\"500\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-62827\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Photo: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/stjohnscollegeSA\"><strong>St John&#8217;s College on Facebook<\/strong><\/a>.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The first weekend of summer sports fixtures of 2025 included basketball teams taking to the court in Gauteng and KwaZulu-Natal.<\/p>\n<p>After 16 days of rain in the Gauteng Province, it was a welcome opportunity for sports to light up the weekend, and <strong>Jeppe High School for Boys<\/strong> welcomed <strong>St John&#8217;s College<\/strong> for a full set of summer fixtures.<\/p>\n<p>The cricket fields were packed, all-out water polo action was lighting up the pool, and basketball games had attracted their always-passionate supporters.<\/p>\n<p>In the first team game, it was the St John&#8217;s College basketball team that emerged victorious in their first outing of the year, beating Jeppe 56-45.<\/p>\n<p>The boys from Houghton dominated, winning 17 of the 19 matches, but the majority were closely contested.<\/p>\n<p>In Kwazulu-Natal, <strong>Kearsney College<\/strong> welcomed <strong>Michaelhouse<\/strong> for the year&#8217;s opening fixtures on Saturday.<\/p>\n<p>The hosts made full use of their home-ground advantage as they turned in a 64-59 overtime victory at the <strong>SportZone <\/strong>after leading 31-27 at halftime.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Pabatso Sithole<\/strong> led Kearsney&#8217;s scoring, with 18 points, while <strong>Funi Kanyongolo<\/strong> shone for Michaelhouse, dropping 26 points through the hoop.<\/p>\n<p>Competition between the rivals was extremely close, with Kearsney winning 10 games and &#8216;House 11.<\/p>\n<p>In Pietermaritzburg, <strong>Westville Boys&#8217; High<\/strong> met <strong>Maritzburg College<\/strong> in a clash of elite teams. <em><strong>The Griffin<\/strong><\/em>, who had staked a strong claim to be the best side in South Africa in the last term of 2024, pulled off an eight-point win in the cauldron of the <strong>Alan Paton Memorial Hall and Multi-Purpose Centre<\/strong> to live up to that status.<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, in Durban, <strong>Northwood<\/strong>, the <a href=\"https:\/\/ssschoolsplus.co.za\/northwood-unstoppable-crowned-st-johns-basketball-tournament-champions\/\"><strong>winners of the St John&#8217;s Basketball Tournament in 2024<\/strong><\/a>, faced a stiff challenge from <strong>Durban High School (DHS).<\/strong> After going behind early, the visitors clawed their way back into the contest and led midway through the game. <em><strong>The Knights<\/strong><\/em>, though, battled their way back, created easier baskets for themselves, and came away with the win.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Hilton College<\/strong> won at <strong>Glenwood<\/strong>, and <strong>St Charles College<\/strong> overcame a half-time deficit to cruise to a big 21-point win over <strong>Clifton College<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Weekend Basketball Results<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Kearsney College 64-59 Michaelhouse<br \/>\nMaritzburg College 54-62 Westville Boys&#8217; High<br \/>\nNorthwood School 62-53 Durban High School<br \/>\nGlenwood 30-41 Hilton College<br \/>\nKearsney College 64-59 Michaelhouse<br \/>\nSt Charles College 70-49 Clifton College<br \/>\nSt John&#8217;s 56-45 Jeppe<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The first weekend of summer sports fixtures of 2025 included basketball teams taking to the court in Gauteng and KwaZulu-Natal.
