Photo: <strong>Toni Butterworth<\/strong><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><strong>Rondebosch Boys&#8217; High<\/strong> claimed the honours at the <strong>St Andrew&#8217;s College (SAC) Shield<\/strong> after a hard-fought but convincing 12-7 win over <strong>St John&#8217;s College<\/strong> in the final in Makhanda on Sunday.<\/p>\n<p>&#8216;Bosch, who entered the tournament after impressing in the pre-season and the opening round of the <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/ssschoolsplus.co.za\/rondebosch-and-bishops-impress-paul-roos-stuns-sacs-in-nite-series-opener\/\">SACS Nite Series<\/a><\/strong>, was, by far, the most impressive team throughout the four-day event.<\/p>\n<p>They played entertaining water polo, scored bucketloads of goals, and defended strongly.<\/p>\n<p>Coach <strong>Jared Wingate-Pearse&#8217;<\/strong>s charges were drawn in Pool B, along with <strong>Paul Roos Gimnasium<\/strong>, <strong>Hilton College<\/strong>, <strong>St John&#8217;s<\/strong>, <strong>Selborne College<\/strong>, and <strong>Grey High School<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>They dominated their pool, scoring 52 goals and conceding just 35.<\/p>\n<p>The Cape Town school kept their winning record going in the knockout stages, handing <strong>SACS <\/strong>a 13-9 defeat in the quarterfinals before rolling to an 11-6 win over Selborne in the semi-finals. St John&#8217;s defeated another southern suburbs power, <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/ssschoolsplus.co.za\/sac-shield-st-johns-outplays-bishops-will-face-rondebosch-in-the-final\/\">Bishops Diocesan College, 8-6 in their semifinal<\/a><\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Waterpolo - St John&amp;apos;s College vs Rondebosch Boys&amp;apos; High - SAC Shield Final - 25 January 2025\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/hP0yH9fMzVU?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>&#8216;Bosch was not about to let history repeat itself. They went down a goal behind early on but quickly recovered to take control of the contest.<\/p>\n<p>After the first chukka, they led 3-1, thanks to goals from <strong>Luke Burger<\/strong>, <strong>James Pinnock<\/strong>, and stalwart <strong>Noah Reiback<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>St John&#8217;s came out fighting in the second chukka, with coach <strong>Vlado Trninic&#8217;<\/strong>s charges tigerishly refusing to go down without a fight. They netted three goals through <strong>Christopher Chapman<\/strong>, <strong>Sebastian Bruinders<\/strong>, and L<strong>uke Towell<\/strong> but Rondebosch kept chipping away and another Reiback strike, followed by a <strong>Rupert Robinson <\/strong>goal, lifted them into a 5-4 lead at the halfway mark.<\/p>\n<p>The third quarter, the &#8220;championship chukka,&#8221; was tightly contested and produced four goals, two for each side, as the action intensified.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_63317\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-63317\" style=\"width: 400px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-63317\" src=\"https:\/\/ssschoolsplus.co.za\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/01\/Shield-Prize-Giving-1-400x267.jpg\" alt=\"Rondebosch Boys' High head coach Jared Wingate-Pearse celebrating with his team after their SAC Shield truimph in Makhanda. Photo: <strong>Toni Butterworth<\/strong><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><strong>Jack Robinson<\/strong>, Rupert&#8217;s brother, and <strong>Joshua Ripsold<\/strong> extended &#8216;Bosch&#8217;s lead before <strong>Nicholas Searle<\/strong> scored twice for St John&#8217;s to make it Rondebosch 7, St John&#8217;s 6, heading into the final chukka.<\/p>\n<p>With the game on the line, the Johannesburg outfit was outplayed in the final chukka and mustered only a consolation goal scored by <strong>Ethan Wilcocks<\/strong>. &#8216;Bosch, meanwhile, racked up five more goals, with Reiback striking twice more before the Robinson brothers completed their doubles.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Kieran Bennewith<\/strong> added another as Rondebosch completed a deserved victory to ensure the SAC Shield remains in the Western Cape.
