Photo: <strong>Toni Butterworth<\/strong><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The 49th edition of the <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/ssschoolsplus.co.za\/teams-hunt-glory-at-49th-vides-water-polo-tournament\/\">Vides Water Polo Tournament<\/a><\/strong> will take centre stage from Thursday at <strong>Selborne College<\/strong> in East London.<\/p>\n<p>The event runs from 13-15 February, with the matches scheduled to take place at the Selborne College Pool and Clarendon High School for Girls\u2019 <strong>Harrison Aquatic Centre<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>An abundance of talent will be on display as 16 teams hunt the silverware.<\/p>\n<p><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/ssschoolsplus.co.za\/watersports\/\">SuperSport Schools Plus<\/a><\/strong> takes a look at five players who could deliver game-changing performances for their teams.<\/p>\n<p><strong>James Swart (Paul Roos Gimnasium, PRG)<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Paul Roos Gimnasium fell short in the final of last year&#8217;s edition of the Vides Water Polo tournament, <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/ssschoolsplus.co.za\/day-3-vides-dominant-clifton-edge-out-paul-roos-for-the-title\/\">losing to Clifton College on penalties<\/a><\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>They\u2019ll return to the event eager to go all the way, and a player who will be vital to their mission is <strong>James Swart<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>Swart has been one of the standout players for PRG this season, firing on all cylinders and scoring some outrageous goals. He inspired the Stellenbosch school to <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/ssschoolsplus.co.za\/rondebosch-and-bishops-impress-paul-roos-stuns-sacs-in-nite-series-opener\/\">an upset win over SACS<\/a><\/strong> and a victory over <strong>Reddam House Constantia<\/strong> in the <strong>SACS Nite Series<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>He also defends well and possesses the skills to turn a game on its head. Photo: <strong>TeamPhoto SA<\/strong><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><strong>Liam Hansen (Selborne College)<br \/>\n<\/strong><br \/>\nSelborne College has a star-studded team in 2025, and it&#8217;s hard to separate and pick one player from the talented bunch.<\/p>\n<p><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/ssschoolsplus.co.za\/player-profile-liam-hansen\/\">Liam Hansen<\/a><\/strong>, however, has proven time and again that he is capable of producing mind-blowing performances every time he jumps into the pool.<\/p>\n<p>He was in top shape for the East London school at the <a href=\"https:\/\/ssschoolsplus.co.za\/sac-shield-bishops-and-rondebosch-unbeaten-saints-and-selborne-impress\/\"><strong>St Andrew&#8217;s College (SAC) Shield<\/strong> <\/a>and helped them finish in an impressive fourth place.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/ssschoolsplus.co.za\/south-african-schools-boys-water-polo-squad-named\/\"><strong>Selected for South African Schools<\/strong><\/a> in 2024, Hansen is a game changer who can score from long-range. Photo: <strong>MBL Sports Photography<\/strong><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><strong>Adam Brown (Reddam House Constantia)<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/ssschoolsplus.co.za\/reddam-constantia-wins-three-at-itec-grey-college-water-polo-tournament\/\">Reddam House Constantia<\/a><\/strong> has hit its stride and they&#8217;re punching above their weight in 2025.<\/p>\n<p>Under head coach Nick Tinkler, the Cape school has impressed in the SACS Nite Series and played well at the <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/ssschoolsplus.co.za\/affies-crowned-itec-grey-college-water-polo-tournament-champions\/\">ITEC Grey College Water Polo Tournament<\/a><\/strong> earlier this month, where they topped their pool.<\/p>\n<p>One of their key players throughout has been <strong>Adam<\/strong> <strong>Brown<\/strong>, brother to Blake, who also plays for Reddam.<\/p>\n<p>Adam is the glue that holds Reddam together. Photo: <strong>Toni Butterworth<\/strong><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><strong>Kyle Human (Clifton College)<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>It could be considered a crime to pick just one player from the current Clifton College team, and that&#8217;s because all are quality players.<\/p>\n<p>Kyle Human stands out, though, because of how he rises to challenges and pulls through for his team in times of need.<\/p>\n<p>He is a serious goalscoring threat and punishes teams that give him space or too much time on the ball.<\/p>\n<p>At the SAC Shield last month, he was the pick of the scorers for Clifton alongside the likes of <strong>Jake Frederic<\/strong>, <strong>Daniel Nothard<\/strong>, and <strong>Nathan Burger<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>Clifton is the defending champion, and Human couldn&#8217;t have peaked at a better time for his team.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_64537\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-64537\" style=\"width: 400px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-64537\" src=\"https:\/\/ssschoolsplus.co.za\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/02\/Shield-Day-1-1-17-400x267.jpg\" alt=\"St Andrew's College captain, Coel Trollip, in action for his team at the SAC Shield. Photo:<strong> Toni Butterworth<\/strong><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><strong>Coel Trollip (St Andrew\u2019s College)<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>St Andrew&#8217;s College skipper, <strong>Coel Trollip<\/strong>, also makes the list of players to keep an eye out for at the Vides Tournament.<\/p>\n<p>He is the true definition of a leader, in and out of the pool, and he is eager to guide St Andrew&#8217;s to more glory days.<\/p>\n<p>He&#8217;s performed well so far this season and helped his team get over the line against <strong>Woodridge College<\/strong>, <strong>Pearson High<\/strong>, and <strong>Kingswood College<\/strong> last month.<\/p>\n<p>He showed up well at the SAC Shield against strong opposition, despite his team finishing only ninth.<\/p>\n<p>Trollip offers a complete package of skills for St Andrew&#8217;s, and his leadership skills, coupled with goalscoring and strong defending, will be crucial if they are to make an impact.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The 49th edition of the Vides Water Polo Tournament will take centre stage from Thursday at Selborne College in East London.
