Photo:<strong> Toni Butterworth<\/strong>.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The 42nd edition of the <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/ssschoolsplus.co.za\/sas-best-chase-kes-water-polo-tournament-glory\/\">King Edward VII (KES) Water Polo Tournament<\/a><\/strong> takes centre stage this weekend in Johannesburg.<\/p>\n<p>The event runs from Friday, 28 February, to Sunday, 2 March, with matches being played at the <strong>Mark Stevens Aquatic Centre<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/live.supersportschools.com\/category\/606f65f91eea03755e56797c\/sub-category\/67b5cf7157cd00e436ea0e8e\/\"><strong>Catch the action LIVE on SuperSport Schools<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n<p>It brings together a high-quality field, with many of the best teams in South Africa set to chase glory in the oldest schools&#8217; water polo tournament of them all.<\/p>\n<p>Those teams are littered with players boasting national and provincial colours. It promises to be a thrilling spectacle.<\/p>\n<p><strong>SuperSport Schools Plus takes a look at five players who could inspire their teams to glory.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Michael Mafunda (Diocesan College)<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Too often, goalkeepers are overlooked in schoolboy water polo, but their impact on a match can be significant.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Michael Mafunda<\/strong>, who has taken over the goalkeeping reins for Bishops in 2025, has been outstanding, especially since he had to replace the outstanding <strong>Jordan De Sousa<\/strong>, who represented SA Schools and SA u18<strong>.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Not only has he not shrunk in the face of the challenge, Mafunda, affectionately known as<strong> &#8220;Money Mike&#8221;,<\/strong> has embraced it and has made it look as if he has been in the first team cage for years.<\/p>\n<p>He has pulled off some miraculous saves for his side and recently helped them retain the <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/ssschoolsplus.co.za\/bishops-captures-back-to-back-nite-series-titles\/\">SACS Nite Series after beating Rondebosch Boys\u2019 High 14-9<\/a><\/strong> in the final.<\/p>\n<p>Mafunda also displays a calm and relaxed demeanour when confronted by penalties and penalty shootouts, which are vital attributes in tournaments. Photo: Kearsney College<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><strong>James Pohl (Kearsney College)<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Kearsney College will enter the\u00a0 KES Water Polo Tournament viewed by some as a side that could go all the way.<\/p>\n<p>If they are to do that, it will be a team effort that wins them the tournament, but a name that stands out is <strong>James Pohl<\/strong>, a player who has shone for his team in recent seasons.<\/p>\n<p>Pohl is not only the captain of the side but the enforcer and talisman, and he plays an unconventional game of water polo.<\/p>\n<p>The KwaZulu-Natal and South African Schools star is described by his coach, <strong>Nicholas Rodda<\/strong>, as a &#8220;dynamic player with strong leadership qualities.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>One of Pohl&#8217;s strengths is his versatility, which allows him to play in any position. Photo: <strong>Toni Butterworth<\/strong><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><strong>Nicholas Searle (St John\u2019s College)<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>St John&#8217;s College has fallen short at the final hurdle in several major tournaments in the past season or two.<\/p>\n<p>This year, they were stopped by Rondebosch Boys&#8217; High in the final of the St Andrew&#8217;s College Shield, going down 7-12.\u00a0They suffered a similar result at KES last year, going down 7-11 to &#8216;Bosch, also.<\/p>\n<p>They head into the KES Water Polo Tournament eager to take that final step. If they&#8217;re to succeed in that quest, their captain <strong>Nicholas Searle<\/strong> will be a key to realising their goal.<\/p>\n<p>He has been one of St John&#8217;s standout players in 2025. Photo: <strong>Toni Butterworth<\/strong><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><strong>Calum Emslie (St Andrew\u2019s College)<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>St Andrew\u2019s College supporters will head to KES feeling optimistic after some strong results from their team recently.<\/p>\n<p>They have good reason to feel that way because St Andrew&#8217;s has been on an upward trajectory after making a slow start at the <strong>SAC Shield<\/strong> in January.<\/p>\n<p>Earlier this month, they impressed at the <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/ssschoolsplus.co.za\/day-3-vides-st-davids-outshines-st-andrews-to-win-title\/\">Vides Water Polo Tournament<\/a>, <\/strong>where they claimed the silver medal.<\/p>\n<p>One of their top performers has been the experienced and ever-present <strong>Calum Emslie<\/strong>. Photo: <strong>Toni Butterworth.<\/strong><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><strong>Noah Reiback (Rondebosch Boys&#8217; High)<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>One of the first names that would be on a list of players to watch, guaranteed, would be <a href=\"https:\/\/ssschoolsplus.co.za\/player-profile-noah-reiback-rondebosch-boys-high\/\"><strong>Noah Reiback<\/strong><\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Only in grade 10, he is one of the most talked about water polo players in the Western Cape, alongside the likes of his team-mate, <strong>Jack Robinson,<\/strong> and the Bishops&#8217; duo of <strong>Matt Fenn<\/strong> and <strong>Timothy Young<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>Reiback is an outrageously talented player and is the full package in the pool.<\/p>\n<p>He has been in clinical form in 2025, scoring goals for fun and making life miserable for defenders.<\/p>\n<p>Last year, when in grade 9, he was one of &#8216;Bosch&#8217;s standout players at the KES Water Polo Tournament and scored a hat-trick in the final as <a href=\"https:\/\/ssschoolsplus.co.za\/day-3-kes-reiback-influential-as-rondebosch-claims-kes-title\/\"><strong>they claimed the title<\/strong><\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>He will be hoping for a similar showing in 2025, especially after Bishops topped Rondebosch in the final of the SACS Nite Series on Wednesday.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Groups<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Pool A:<\/strong> Bishops, Northwood, St Andrew&#8217;s College, St Stithians.<br \/>\n<strong>Pool B:<\/strong> Kearsney College, King Edward VII, Paul Roos, Westville Boys&#8217;
