Photo: <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/ziyaad_solo\/?hl=am-et\">Ziyaad Solomons<\/a><\/strong><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The 2025 schoolboy hockey season is heating up, and it will reach boiling point this weekend with three major tournaments bringing together many of the country&#8217;s best teams.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Jeppe High School for Boys<\/strong> will host the <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/ssschoolsplus.co.za\/top-teams-head-to-jeppe-for-the-nomads-hockey-festival\/\">Nomads Hockey Festival<\/a>,<\/strong> in Johannesburg, while <strong>Afrikaanse Ho\u00ebr Seunskool (Affies)<\/strong> will welcome top teams to the <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/ssschoolsplus.co.za\/paarl-gim-heads-to-founders-festival-in-search-of-their-mojo\/\">Founders Festival<\/a>,<\/strong> in Pretoria.<\/p>\n<p>Durban will be treated to the <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/ssschoolsplus.co.za\/five-players-to-watch-at-the-coastal-cup\/\">Belgotex Sport Coastal Cup<\/a><\/strong>, and all the action will be live on <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/live.supersportschools.com\/auth\/login\/\">SuperSport Schools<\/a><\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>The Nomads Festival features some of South Africa&#8217;s most well-established hockey-playing schools.<\/p>\n<p>An abundance of talent will be on display at the <strong>Boden AstroTurf<\/strong> at Jeppe. We take a look at five players you should keep an eye on.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Reagan Mudau \u2013 Hilton College<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Reagan Mudau is a rising star within the <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/ssschoolsplus.co.za\/hilton-records-brilliant-win-at-kearsney-dhs-triumphs-at-michaelhouse\/\">Hilton College<\/a><\/strong> hockey fraternity. He was a strong performer in 2024, but he appears to have taken a further step forward and is coming into his own in 2025.<\/p>\n<p>He is the co-vice-captain of the side with <strong>Matt Thomas<\/strong>, while <strong>Xavier Enslin<\/strong> leads the team.<\/p>\n<p>Mudau has a sound understanding of the game, with a strong engine that enables him to work up and down the pitch. He is calm and collected with the ball and has the pace to eliminate opposing players.<\/p>\n<p>His excellence was recognised when he represented the<strong> SA u17<\/strong> team at last year&#8217;s <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/ssschoolsplus.co.za\/coach-shares-takeaways-from-sa-u17-girls-dato-mirnawan-cup-campaign\/\">Dato Miranwan Cup in Malaysia<\/a><\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>Recently, Mudau made a remarkable comeback after being sidelined for six weeks by injury, and he&#8217;s eager to make his mark at Nomads.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_68186\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-68186\" style=\"width: 400px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-68186\" src=\"https:\/\/ssschoolsplus.co.za\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/03\/Van-Heerden-400x266.jpg\" alt=\"Gray van Heerden will lead Selborne College in 2025. Photo: <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/profile.php?id=61564213538889\">Shot by Shani Photography<\/a><\/strong><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><strong>Gray van Heerden \u2013 Selborne College<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Gray van Heerden is a prominent figure in Border Schools hockey and will captain <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/ssschoolsplus.co.za\/selborne-college-aiming-higher-in-2025\/\">Selborne College<\/a><\/strong> in 2025.<\/p>\n<p>His leadership on and off the field has been instrumental in guiding the team through a series of successful matches in the early part of the season.<\/p>\n<p>As a captain, he leads with confidence and inspires his teammates.<\/p>\n<p>His skills and dedication earned him a place in the <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/ssschoolsplus.co.za\/border-confirms-strong-team-for-sashoc-national-week-in-bloemfontein\/\">Border Schools Hockey Association<\/a><\/strong>&#8216;s squad for last year\u2019s SASHOC National Week, which was hosted in Bloemfontein.<\/p>\n<p>He&#8217;ll set the example for a young Selborne outfit that would love to emulate the 2024 squad, which won all five of their matches at the Nomads Festival, in Pietermarizburg.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_68188\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-68188\" style=\"width: 400px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-68188\" src=\"https:\/\/ssschoolsplus.co.za\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/03\/448725973_1111601380393797_7554482696374977148_n-400x330.jpg\" alt=\"Ethan Kapanda aims to lead Jeppe to victory in front of their home supporters at the Nomads Hockey Festival. Photo: <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/JeppeBoys\">Jeppe High School for Boys on Facebook<\/a><\/strong><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><strong>Ethan Kapanda \u2013 Jeppe High School for Boys<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Jeppe centre-back, Ethan Kapanda, is an experienced first-team campaigner who will relish running out for his school on its home turf.<\/p>\n<p>Kapanda has been described as a \u201cstrong and old, traditional defender\u201d, who is rock-solid at the back, and always willing to go the extra mile for his teammates.<\/p>\n<p>He has good distribution skills and is a regular goal-scoring contributor at penalty corner time with his drag flicks.<\/p>\n<p>In 2024, he represented <strong>Southern Gauteng A<\/strong> at the SASHOC National Week. Photo: <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/ziyaad_solo\/?hl=am-et\">Ziyaad Solomons<\/a><\/strong><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><strong>Zachary &#8220;Zach&#8221; Gibbon (Wynberg Boys\u2019 High)<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Wynberg Boys\u2019 High<\/strong> is the only Western Cape side heading to Nomads this year, and they&#8217;ll be led by <strong>Zach Gibbon<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>He is one of a small number of players to return to the Wynberg first team, which bade farewell to eight players at the end of last season.<\/p>\n<p>Unfortunately, Gibbon was out injured for much of the 2024 season. He missed out on the Nomads Festival but represented <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/ssschoolsplus.co.za\/western-province-claims-back-to-back-sashoc-national-week-titles\/\">Western Province u18A<\/a><\/strong> at the SASHOC National Week.\u00a0He was also included in the SA u17 side.<\/p>\n<p>Gibbon is also an outstanding cricketer and will look to merge his skills and deliver cracking performances for the Cape side.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_68190\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-68190\" style=\"width: 400px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-68190\" src=\"https:\/\/ssschoolsplus.co.za\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/03\/Matthias-Visser-Grey-College-400x267.jpg\" alt=\"Matthias Visser will be Grey College's dangerman again in 2025. Photo:<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/profile.php?id=100063712946669\"> The Weekend Photography<\/a><\/strong><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><strong>Matthias Visser &#8211; Grey College<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Visser is one of the most exciting schoolboy hockey defenders in South Africa.<\/p>\n<p>The youngster, from Bloemfontein, enters another season with <strong>Grey College<\/strong>, and this year carries heavy responsibilities on his shoulders.<\/p>\n<p>He is solid at the back, has great distribution skills, and can turn on the afterburners easily.<\/p>\n<p>What makes him dangerous, though, are his drag flicks.
