The Gauteng Development League<\/strong> is regarded as one of the best academy leagues on the African continent. The standard of football and the quality of the players and the coaches is high.<\/p>\n

This makes it difficult for teams moving up from the Gauteng Development Promotional League (GDPL)<\/strong> to adapt to the pace, tactics, and technical prowess of the teams that have been playing in the GDL for many years.<\/p>\n

As a result, we have seen teams get promoted and last only one season in the GDL. Coach Tebello Kheswa<\/strong>‘s NWU Vaal<\/strong> u19 team is a prime example of a team that struggled to keep up with the experienced GDL teams after making the jump in 2024.<\/p>\n

This season, the new kids on the block are coach Thokozani Mnguni<\/strong>‘s Rockefvs<\/strong> team, from Pretoria.<\/p>\n

Mnguni, a former Mamelodi Sundowns<\/strong> and Black Leopards<\/strong> defender, has also been welcomed with a baptism of fire in the first few rounds of GDL fixtures this season.<\/p>\n

Rockefvs is yet to win a game, and Mnguni puts it down to psychological challenges.\u00a0“The mental strength of our players is a problem,” Mnguni told SuperSport Schools Plus<\/strong><\/a> in an exclusive interview.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

“Look, we can dominate. W<\/span>e can move the ball around. That’s how we play. W<\/span>e can dominate, b<\/span>ut towards the end of the match, we lack concentration,” he said.\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Mnguni added that his players are still coming to terms with playing against big-name clubs, such as Kaizer Chiefs<\/strong> and Mamelodi Sundowns.<\/p>\n

The 46-year-old emphasised that, thus far, his players have displayed a little too much respect for their opposition.\u00a0“With my boys, from where they come from, for them, they still, when you talk about Mamelodi Sundowns,<\/span><\/span> Kaizer Chiefs<\/span>, you can see the fear is there,” he explained.\u00a0 <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

“I want them to take them as normal opposition. I tell them, “G<\/span><\/span>et into the tunnel w<\/span><\/span>hen you’re about to reach the field, tell them today it’s me against you, n<\/span><\/span>ot you against me’.”<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Mnguni has taken his young troops from humble beginnings in Pretoria and achieved a rare feat by earning a promotion from the GDPL to the GDL in their first season competing in the league.<\/p>\n

Despite facing serious challenges, they dominated the GDPL and forced their way into the GDL this season.<\/p>\n

“We started last season in the GDPL.<\/span><\/span> So it was our first season there. <\/span><\/span>We are from the Football Association of Pretoria<\/strong>,” Mnguni said.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

“We were conquering s<\/span><\/span>eason in and season out. We were winning trophies, cup games, and league games. <\/span><\/span>We needed to step up and get ourselves playing against some of the best teams in Gauteng.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

“<\/span><\/span>Coming from the local football association, going to the GDPL, was not easy, even last year.<\/span><\/span> Remember, it was our first season there, and<\/span><\/span> we experienced so many things, so many challenges – <\/span><\/span>things like refereeing, and, f<\/span><\/span>inancially, it was tough. <\/span><\/span>But we managed to succeed.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

“This year, going to the mainstream, the GDL, it’s a different ball game again.<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span>It’s not like the GDPL, whereby you can plan things. Victories can come easier.
\n<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

“<\/span><\/span>This year, it’s more of a tactical and technical challenge.<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span>Technically and tactically, you have to be sharp.”<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

This week, Mnguni will lead his charges against Seven’s Academy<\/strong> and will be hoping that the home advantage they will have at the ACCP Sports Ground<\/strong> will help them to a first victory in the GDL.<\/p>\n

In other fixtures, Tuks<\/strong>\u00a0will host SuperSport United<\/strong> at the Groenkloof Campus<\/strong> in a mouth-watering Tshwane derby.<\/p>\n

Randburg AFC<\/strong>, after knocking off Kaizer Chiefs<\/strong> last weekend,\u00a0welcomes Mamelodi Sundowns<\/strong> to the Randburg Sports Complex<\/strong>, Kathorus Hyper<\/strong> Academy<\/strong> takes on Panorama<\/strong> FC<\/strong> at Huntersfield Stadium<\/strong>, and the East Rand Athletic Club<\/strong> meets Wits Junior<\/strong> at Tsakane Stadium<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

TS Galaxy<\/strong> faces the defending champions, Highlands Park<\/strong>, Jomo Cosmos<\/strong> is home to Elspark United Academy<\/strong>, and Remember Elite Sport Academy <\/strong>meets Kaizer Chiefs<\/strong> at Tuks Sports Ground<\/strong>.<\/p>\n
