There were goals galore, a couple of shock results, and milestones achieved on day one of the Belgotex Sport Easter Hockey Festival<\/a><\/strong> in Cape Town on Wednesday.<\/p>\n

The annual event runs until Saturday, 5 April, and all the action will be live on the SuperSport Schools App<\/a><\/strong>.<\/p>\n

One of Africa\u2019s biggest co-ed hockey festivals, it has drawn 96 teams to the Mother City.<\/p>\n

The opening day\u2019s action took place at eight venues, which include the Hartleyvale A<\/strong> and B<\/strong> turfs, Western Province Cricket Club<\/strong>‘s two fields, Pinelands High School, Rustenburg Girls’ High<\/strong>, Wynberg Girls’ High<\/strong>, and Herschel Girls School<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Several teams in the boys’ section were impressive and put their hands up as potential successors to last year’s champions, Paarl Gimnasium<\/a><\/strong>, who are absent this year.<\/p>\n

Worcester Gimnasium<\/strong> was on song and ended the day with wins over Penryn School<\/strong> and St John’s College<\/strong>, from Zimbabwe.<\/p>\n

Coach Edrich Janse van Rensburg<\/strong>‘s side netted through Christiaan Jacobs<\/strong> and Jannie Vlok<\/strong> against their Zimbabwean counterparts, while Bhukosi Mapete<\/strong> found the back of the net against Penryn before Jacobs scored his second of the day.<\/p>\n

The South African College High School (SACS)<\/strong> Invitational side also showed promising signs.<\/p>\n

They played to a goalless draw with Glenwood House<\/strong> but did enough to qualify for the round of 16 after beating Hugenote<\/strong> 2-0, courtesy of goals by Brett van Rooyen<\/strong> and Nicholas Oscroft<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Another Cape Town outfit, Stellenberg High<\/strong>, made it through to the knockout stages and will face Woodridge College<\/strong>, Curro Durbanville<\/strong>, and Langenhoven Gimnasium<\/strong> in the last 16.<\/p>\n

Ho\u00ebrskool Nelspruit<\/strong> is a team to watch. The side, led by Anthony Ruschenbaum<\/strong>, made its presence felt on day one with a 6-0 defeat of Oudtshoorn<\/strong> before playing out to an entertaining goalless draw with Kempton Park<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

They have been drawn in Pool C of the Cup section and will face the Paul Roos Gimnasium Invitational <\/strong>side, Ho\u00ebrskool Outeniqua<\/strong>, and Ho\u00ebrskool Monument<\/strong>. All the teams in that pool are unbeaten.<\/p>\n

Hudson Park High School,<\/strong> from East London, rattled in 10 goals as coach Sipe Matafeni<\/strong>‘s troops defeated Windhoek Gimnasium<\/strong> and the Paarl Gimnasium Invitational<\/strong> team in their first two outings.<\/p>\n

Against Windhoek, Helio Ruiters<\/strong> netted a brace and was joined on the score sheet by Nathan Kearney<\/strong> and Zizibele Mtongana<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Hudson will continue in the Cup section where they will meet Fairmont High<\/strong>, Bridge House<\/strong>, and DF Malan<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Only one international side qualified for the Cup section, and that was Pro-Ed Akademie<\/strong>, from Swakopmund, in Namibia.<\/p>\n

GIRLS SECTION:<\/strong><\/p>\n

While the action lived up to expectations in the boys’ section, the girls also delivered some cracking performances.<\/p>\n

One of the tournament favourites, Stellenberg High School<\/strong>, began their hunt for silverware in the best possible way with an impressive 7-0 win over Worcester Gimnasium.<\/p>\n

In that clash, three of their players, Ilke van der Merwe<\/strong>, Minke Lourens<\/strong>, and Helen de Kock<\/strong>, celebrated 100 games for the side.<\/p>\n

They dominated the game, scoring through Juane Meiring<\/strong> (2), Zanay Gerber<\/strong> (2), Stella Zwiegers<\/strong>, Bea van den Berg<\/strong>, and Lan\u00e9 Schoeman<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

They upped the ante in their second clash and thumped the Rustenburg Girls’ Invitational<\/strong> side 13-0.<\/p>\n

Coach Paulene de Bruin<\/strong>‘s side charged into the Cup knockout stages where they will take on Zimbabwe’s Peterhouse<\/strong>, Namibia’s St Paul’s College<\/strong>, and Ho\u00ebrskool Eldoraigne<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Ho\u00ebrskool Monument<\/strong> and Fairmont High<\/strong> were also on song on the opening day.<\/p>\n

Fairmont ripped through Ho\u00ebrskool Linden<\/strong> and Ho\u00ebrskool Upington<\/strong> 3-0 and 4-0, respectively, to book themselves a spot in the playoffs.<\/p>\n

An interesting battle in the round of 16 awaits between Ho\u00ebrskool Nelspruit<\/strong>, Rustenburg Girls’ High, Wynberg Girls’ High<\/strong>, and Ho\u00ebrskool Outeniqua<\/strong>.\u00a0All four sides are in the same group after dominating their opponents on Wednesday.<\/p>\n

Wynberg beat Charlie Hofmeyr<\/strong> 2-1 and Woodridge College 2-0. At the centre of their attack was skipper Jehan Abrahams<\/strong><\/a>, who scored in both matches.<\/p>\n

It was a good day for Ho\u00ebrskool Monument, who netted nine goals without reply, to go with the 11 their boys scored without conceding.<\/p>\n

Day two will see the teams meeting in the Cup, Shield, and Bowl sections as the tournament intensifies.<\/p>\n
