There\u2019s a reason South African rugby continues to sit comfortably at the top table of world rugby\u2014and it\u2019s not by chance. While countries like New Zealand rely on their fabled academies (or, as Eddie Jones cheekily put it, the \u201cisland academies\u201d of Fiji, Tonga, and Samoa), we\u2019ve built a machine far more powerful here in South Africa. <\/span><\/p>\n

Ours is driven by passion, community, history, and yes, massive investment.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

That machine is\u00a0<\/span>schoolboy rugby<\/span><\/strong>.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

Behind every Springbok jersey, there\u2019s a story that often starts on the manicured fields of Paul Roos, Grey College, Affies, Paarl Boys, Paarl Gim, and many more. Our schools aren\u2019t just playing rugby\u2014they\u2019re running full-scale\u00a0<\/span>rugby businesses<\/span><\/strong>.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

And make no mistake\u2014<\/span>business<\/span><\/strong>\u00a0<\/strong>is exactly what it has become.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

A Billion-Rand Industry in Takkies and Tracktops<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

Collectively, South Africa\u2019s top 200 rugby schools\u00a0<\/span>spend well over R1 billion per year<\/span><\/strong> on their rugby programs. That includes everything from elite coaching and specialist conditioning to high-performance gym facilities, full-time analysts, nutritionists, psychologists, and yes\u2014even salaries that rival some of the country’s professional unions.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

Today, top school coaches can earn\u00a0<\/span>north of R1 million a year<\/span><\/strong>. Major festivals like Noord\/Suid attract crowds that put Currie Cup games to shame. Sponsorship, merchandising, streaming rights\u2014schoolboy rugby is no longer a stepping stone. It\u2019s a beast of its own.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

And rightly so. A successful rugby program is a school’s best marketing campaign. It attracts students, alumni investment, corporate partners, and national attention. Schools are competing not just for wins but for brand equity.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

Professionalism at 16?<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

Of course, there\u2019s a conversation to be had about the intensity and professionalism being placed on players as young as 14. Burnout, injury, and mental fatigue are real risks. Not every boy will play Craven Week or wear green and gold\u2014but many train like they already have.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

That said,\u00a0<\/span>I firmly believe the positives outweigh the negatives<\/span>\u2014especially from a rugby perspective. The structure, discipline, and coaching quality being offered at school level today is world-class. It\u2019s preparing these young men for elite rugby and life beyond it. If anything, the system is becoming a\u00a0<\/span>career incubator<\/span>\u2014for both players and coaches.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

From Grey College to the World Stage<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

At the recent Noord\/Suid Festival at Paul Roos, I watched match after match that would rival some senior provincial fixtures. Schools like Noordheuwel, Garsfontein, and Durbanville are pushing traditional giants like Grey and Paul Roos to the wire. The quality isn\u2019t just improving\u2014it\u2019s\u00a0<\/span>exploding<\/span><\/strong>.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

You\u2019ve got fullback prodigies, midfield monsters, and clever No. 9s who could slot into U20 setups tomorrow. And it\u2019s not just the first teams. The\u00a0<\/span>coaching and alignment from under-14E through to under-19A<\/span><\/strong>\u00a0is laser-focused. Systems are in place, data is being captured, and game plans are executed like clockwork.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

It\u2019s not about raw talent anymore\u2014it\u2019s about\u00a0<\/span>developmental consistency<\/span><\/strong>. From the kid learning to fold from a middle scrum in the U14C team, to the SA Schools outside centre in matric, the\u00a0<\/span>pipeline is real<\/span><\/strong>.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

A Gold Mine and a Bottleneck<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

There\u2019s no denying that not every standout schoolboy star will make it to the Springboks. Some won\u2019t even make it into senior provincial setups. Some will be lost to Europe. Others, like Duhan van der Merwe, may find themselves wearing a different shade of international green.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

But that\u2019s the price we pay for\u00a0<\/span>having too much talent<\/span><\/strong>. And it’s a price worth paying.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n
