Photo: <strong>Debbie Cordeiro<\/strong><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>There were comprehensive victories for <strong>South African College High School (SACS)<\/strong>, <strong>Paul Roos Gimnasium<\/strong>, and <strong>Grey College<\/strong> on a wet and cold opening day of the <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/ssschoolsplus.co.za\/sas-cream-of-the-crop-head-to-gqeberha-for-the-hibbert-shield\/\">Standard Bank Hibbert Shield<\/a>,<\/strong> in Gqeberha, on Wednesday.<\/p>\n<p>The prestigious event is hosted by <strong>Grey High School<\/strong> and runs through until Saturday, 3 May.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">Catch the Hibbert Shield <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/live.supersportschools.com\/\">LIVE<\/a><\/strong> on SuperSport Schools.<\/p>\n<p>It was a blistering start to the tournament for some of the top teams who came out guns blazing and made strong statements while grabbing maximum points.<\/p>\n<p>In the early session, SACS took on <strong>St Alban&#8217;s College<\/strong> and cruised to a comfortable 7-0 victory.<\/p>\n<p>The boys from Cape Town, led by coach <strong>Sam Holmes<\/strong>, powered to victory in style, controlling the game from start to finish.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Litha Kraai<\/strong>, who was named the <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/sahockey.co.za\/2025\/04\/30\/south-african-hockey-announces-2024-sa-indoor-hockey-award-winners\/\">SA Indoor Hockey Men&#8217;s Breakthrough Player of the Year<\/a><\/strong> while at the Hibbert Shield, scored a brace along with <strong>Reece Theunis<\/strong>. The drubbing was completed with further goals from <strong>Zach Redfern<\/strong>, <strong>Cameron Groves<\/strong>, and the skipper, <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/ssschoolsplus.co.za\/five-players-to-watch-at-the-hibbert-shield\/\">Jo Le Roux<\/a><\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>In their second match of the day, SACS was forced to grind out a 3-0 win over a gutsy Pearson High side. Theunis, <strong>Mohlodi Maseko<\/strong>, and <strong>Adam Thompson <\/strong>were on the scoresheet.<\/p>\n<p>While the Cape Town boys dominated, their Western Cape rivals, <strong>Paul Roos Gimnasium<\/strong>, also enjoyed a winning start to their campaign.\u00a0The <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/ssschoolsplus.co.za\/prgs-mentality-monsters-claim-back-to-back-hibbert-shield-titles\/\">defending champions<\/a><\/strong> defeated <strong>Selborne College<\/strong> 4-0 in the morning and returned later in the day to score a hard-fought 2-0 win over <strong>Clifton College<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>Against Selborne, it was <strong>Callum van Oudtshoorn<\/strong>, <strong>Ruan Strauss<\/strong>, <strong>Seth Paterson<\/strong>, and <strong>Jeandre van Zyl<\/strong> who netted for the Stellenbosch school, while <strong>Caleb Cilliers<\/strong> scored the opener against Clifton before Paterson struck for the second time in the tournament to seal the win.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/ssschoolsplus.co.za\/paarl-gim-scores-thrilling-win-over-grey-college\/\"><strong>Grey College<\/strong><\/a> played only one match on Wednesday, but they stole the spotlight by outplaying <strong>Pearson High<\/strong> 7-0.<\/p>\n<p>Pools C and D were highly contested.\u00a0<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/ssschoolsplus.co.za\/swanepoel-pleased-with-paarl-gims-hot-start-at-hibbert-shield\/\">Paarl Gimnasium<\/a><\/strong> was arguably the big winner in Pool C after recording an astonishing 5-0 victory over the hosts. It was a clinical performance by Gim, who converted three of their short corners, through skipper<strong> Juan Swanepoel<\/strong>, <strong>Phillip Barnard,<\/strong> and <strong>Reinhardt Honiball<\/strong>. <strong>Stefan Wiehahn<\/strong> and <strong>Josh Smit<\/strong> netted from open play in an impressive win.<\/p>\n<p><strong>St Stithians College<\/strong> was made to work hard for their victory over <strong>Westville Boys&#8217; High<\/strong>.
