Schoolgirls’<\/span>\u00a0hockey action returned with a bang in the Western Cape on the weekend, with three top sides, Rhenish <\/strong><\/span>Girls’<\/strong>\u00a0High School<\/strong>, Paarl Gimnasium<\/strong>, and Ho\u00ebr Meisieskool Bloemhof<\/strong>, all taking to the turf<\/span>.<\/span><\/p>\n

Much was expected<\/span> from Rhenish and Bloemhof,<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>who<\/span> fell short in the All <\/strong><\/span>Girls’ <\/strong>Festival <\/strong>a week <\/span>prior,<\/span> while Paarl Gim was brimming with confidence after their Belgotex Sport Girls Hockey Challenge triumph<\/a><\/strong>.<\/span><\/p>\n

The Gim <\/span>girls,<\/span> coached by Danelle van <\/strong><\/span>Zyl,<\/strong> made the short trip to Stellenbosch to face Bloemhof in an eagerly anticipated clash<\/span><\/p>\n

It was a tough <\/span>and tightly contested affair between the rivals, <\/span>but<\/span> the final result favoured the girls in green and gold, <\/span>who<\/span> came away with a 2-1 victory.<\/span><\/p>\n

Imke Koegelenberg<\/strong> scored a tap-in goal early <\/span>on,<\/span> before Anya Swanepoel<\/strong>, who has caused havoc from penalty corners this season, sealed the win with a penalty stroke late in the game. <\/span><\/p>\n

Paarl Gim will have a bye this coming weekend before returning to action against Parel Vallei<\/strong>.<\/span><\/p>\n

While Gim enjoyed their victory, Rhenish <\/span>was held<\/span> to a 1-1 draw by Herschel Girls School on home turf.<\/span><\/p>\n

Coach Chris <\/span>Gerber’s<\/span> side dominated most of the match and created multiple opportunities, <\/span>but<\/span> they failed to take advantage of them.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Pippa <\/strong>Viljoen’<\/strong>s<\/span> strike for Rhenish was cancelled out by a reply from Anna Sherren<\/strong>, and there was nothing to separate the sides when the final whistle sounded.<\/span><\/p>\n

Meanwhile, Paarl <\/strong><\/span>Girls’<\/strong> High<\/strong> recorded a comfortable 3-0 win over Somerset College<\/strong>. <\/span>Coach Marc <\/strong><\/span>Landman<\/strong>‘s<\/span> side took the victory on the back of <\/span>Halle Williams’<\/strong> brace and a goal from Charlotte Louw<\/strong>.<\/span><\/p>\n

Springfield Convent School<\/strong> was the other big winner on the weekend after they defeated La Rochelle<\/strong>, in Paarl. <\/span>Jenna Kalis<\/strong> found the back of the net, scoring the all-important only goal of the contest for the Cape Town school. The victory will boost Springfield’s confidence ahead of a meeting with <\/span>Herschel this coming weekend.<\/span><\/p>\n

St Cyprian’s<\/strong> School<\/strong> continued their strong season with a 5-2 win over Parel Vallei, <\/span>while<\/span> Fairmont High<\/a> <\/strong>was held to a 2-2 draw by DF Malan<\/strong>. <\/span>In Mossel Bay,<\/span> Ho\u00ebrskool Outeniqua<\/strong> pulled off an impressive 3-2 win over Ho\u00ebrskool Punt<\/strong>.<\/span><\/p>\n
