The first three months of the schoolboy hockey season in the Western Cape have been <\/span>fairly<\/span> routine in terms of top teams dominating and tallying up wins.<\/span><\/p>\n

However, it was just a matter of time before hockey enthusiasts who love an underdog story were treated to a thrilling clash and a <\/span>major<\/span> upset.<\/span><\/p>\n

Last year, that big shock came when Rondebosch <\/span>Boys\u2019 High defeated Paul Roos Gimnasium 1-0<\/a>.<\/strong> No one saw that coming.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Fast forward to 2025, and a <\/span>major<\/span> upset unfolded on Friday night when Stellenberg High School<\/strong> recorded a famous 2-1 victory over Bishops Diocesan College<\/strong> at the Woodlands AstroTurf<\/strong>, in Cape Town.<\/span><\/p>\n

That triumph will go down as one of the best yet for Stellenberg, who in past seasons <\/span>have been on the receiving end of<\/span> some hefty defeats at the hands of Bishops. <\/span><\/p>\n

The boys from Bellville meant business from the get-go and put the hosts under pressure before opening the scoring through Charl van Niekerk<\/strong>. <\/span>The home side pulled one back, but Gerrard <\/strong><\/span>Matthews-Boukoua’s<\/strong><\/span> strike <\/span>sealed a treasured win for the visitors.<\/span><\/p>\n

Reacting after the momentous victory, head coach Kyle Esau<\/strong> said: “I\u2019m<\/span> still overwhelmed by the result. Coming in, I <\/span>didn’t<\/span> expect the result, but I expected the boys to come out and fight and give it their all.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

“T<\/span>he boys played their hearts out. I think we did the same against SACS, but we <\/span>didn’t<\/span> have the result to show for it, <\/span>and<\/span> then coming back against Bishops, they stepped up,<\/span>\u201d he told SuperSport Schools Plus<\/a><\/strong>.<\/span><\/p>\n

Their first two league fixtures, against SACS <\/strong><\/span>and Rondebosch <\/strong><\/span>Boys’<\/strong>\u00a0High<\/strong>, were tough on Stellenberg. Against SACS, they suffered a 1-9 loss, and last weekend they went down 1-5 against ‘Bosch. <\/span><\/p>\n

Despite those heavy defeats, they showed glimpses of their potential <\/span>and of how dangerous they could be. To finally see that potential deliver a big result <\/span>pleased Esau<\/span>.<\/span><\/p>\n

“T<\/span>aking a result from any of the <\/span>boys’<\/span>\u00a0schools is always a special moment because <\/span>it’s<\/span> not often you get those results against the top four teams in our league,” he said.<\/span><\/p>\n

“<\/span>I<\/span>t’s<\/span> been a lot of hard work<\/span>, a lot of<\/span> grinding, since I took over three years ago.<\/span> The guys have had to adapt to my systems and my styles. It’s <\/span>been a process, <\/span>but<\/span> now <\/span>it’s<\/span> coming through stronger than ever<\/span>.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Stellenberg will return to action against Wynberg <\/strong><\/span>Boys’<\/strong>\u00a0High<\/strong> at the end of May. <\/span>Coach Esau said <\/span>they’ll<\/span> reset, refocus, and quickly put the Bishops’ win behind them.<\/span><\/p>\n

“<\/span><\/strong>I<\/span> told the guys immediately after the match that <\/span>it’s<\/span> done now. <\/span>We\u2019ve<\/span> grabbed the points, and we need to move on.<\/span><\/p>\n

“W<\/span>e have a break this coming week, and then we take on Wynberg later this month, but we will work hard and focus on fixing the mistakes we made. <\/span>It’s<\/span> important to reset and refocus. These are <\/span>big games that we are kicking off our league with, so we have no time to relax,”<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>he concluded.<\/span><\/p>\n

While <\/span>it was a team effort that<\/span> secured the win, some of the players who stood out <\/span>included<\/span> Gerrard Matthews-Boukoua, Jacques van Dyk<\/strong>, Nicol Truter<\/strong>, centurion Ben Marais<\/strong>, Charl van Niekerk, Christopher Schoeman<\/strong> and Juan Joubert<\/strong>.<\/span><\/p>\n

In another Western Cape clash, Wynberg <\/span>Boys’<\/span> High claimed a 3-2 win over Paarl <\/strong><\/span>Boys’<\/strong>\u00a0High<\/strong> at the Astro of Dreams<\/strong>.<\/span><\/p>\n

Chad Julius<\/strong> netted a brace for coach Ben <\/strong><\/span>Wiley’<\/strong>s<\/span> side before Ethan Daniels<\/strong> got his name on the score sheet. For Paarl, it was Martin de Bruyn<\/strong> and Alex Lategan<\/strong> who replied<\/span>. <\/span><\/p>\n

Parel Vallei, meanwhile, returned to action with an impressive 4-0 victory over Somerset College. Their goals were scored by Boland u18A <\/span>representatives,<\/span> Luka Meets (2)<\/strong> and Luca Jordaan<\/strong> before Nathan Nissen<\/strong> got in on the action.<\/span><\/p>\n

SACS were the big winners <\/span>on<\/span> the day, thumping Rondebosch <\/strong><\/span>Boys’<\/strong>\u00a0High <\/strong>9-1 at the Brewery AstroTurf<\/strong>.<\/span><\/p>\n

It was a special day for their number 10, Litha Kraai<\/strong>, <\/span>who<\/span> ran out for his 100th game in the blue and white hoops. <\/span>Kraai was in top form and netted five times while further goals by Matthew Lassen<\/strong>, Reece Theunis<\/strong>, Jo Le Roux<\/strong>, and Adam Thompson<\/strong> added to the lopsided final score.<\/span><\/p>\n

Reddam House Constantia<\/strong> also registered a win, outplaying DF Malan <\/strong>5-1.<\/span><\/p>\n

Skipper Joe Gitlin<\/strong> contributed a hat-trick,\u00a0 and, <\/span>in<\/span> the <\/span>process,<\/span> scored his 100th goal for Reddam, becoming the first player in the <\/span>school’s<\/span> history to achieve the feat.<\/span><\/p>\n

Mitchell Welch<\/strong> and Daniel Steyn<\/strong> chipped in with goals as Reddam continued to bolster their impressive record.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
